  • Do these trains have electric outlets for phone chargers?

  • @johnc7995 Yes, most of the time they do, but once in a while, they will have some older cars that do not offer a 115 VAC outlet, but, on my last couple of recent trips, I always had a 115 VAC outlet available at my seat.

  • question please help me!! first time going on a train.. can i seat where ever i want'? also do you sleep on the seats? i want to travel from california to texas. just for fun how is the view ?

  • why so few people use the trains in USA ???is more comfortable tan planes, expensiveless, more echological..

in the Airport we live all kind of abuse and privacity violation, the sits are absolutely umcomfortables, you shoul be 2 hour before the departure....I think the trai is the transport of the future.I hope USA makes like Europe and begins to use high speed trains...

  • @astrofabio68 when you can pay less to take a plane and get to your destination in 4 hours versus 28 hours it makes it kind of hard to take the train and waste your potential vacation sitting in a train when you can fly there faster for less money.

  • Nice video. Thanks for posting it.

  • this must be very confortable.... nice video!!!

  • love those trains

  • TFS

  • i hope Amtrak cancels this train. its more trouble than its worth. i probably cost $2000 easily to accomdate people that miss their connection because this train doesnt know the concept of a Timetable. it just comes and goes whenever it feels like it. i never in my life seen a train with a consistant 5-15hr late train every single day. if this was the railroad this train would have improved almost instantly. but of course with Amtrak sucks

  • @howardkevinm In my past 4 years or so traveling from Denver to Provo, Utah and back on the Amtrak California Zephyr, the train always left on time from Denver, but catching the train in Provo, Utah to go back to Denver, The train was only off by a few mints except for one occasion when the train arrived almost 2 hours late due to something that broke down in the dining car which delayed them. Amtrak has a phone number that you can call where you can get info about arrival delays at any station.

  • @Philovideo or i can just go online and check the status every day which i do. everyday for the last two weeks its been late more than 5hrs, once it was late 31hrs.

  • Something to keep in mind - from Denver to California, the Zephyr runs on Union Pacific, which is not known as being particularly Amtrak-friendly.

  • thanks for the vid, i was looking for some train preview before I went to my brothers wedding in Coloraado :)

  • me to

  • i love this train.

  • We took the Zephyr round trip to Chicago and loved it. My video of the first class rooms of the Zephyr and the Cardinal is not as detailed as yours though. Thanks for the great video!

  • I always love seeing the front of the train from the back :-)

  • I try to always travel by train. This summer we're going to Chicago from Seattle. I had already booked my tickets for the Empire Builder when we found out a "Force Majeur" (Act of G-d) happened in Minot ND. (The floods) Our train route has been changed from the Empire to the Coast Starlight-California Zephyr. Looking forward to the trip! (As I have never traveled on the Zephyr.) Anyways thanks for the vids. Looks like an amazing trip! :)

  • My brother and me took this loco from Denver to Grand Junction in July 2005. The best experience I've ever had, The scenery was fantastic...............................from an old British tourist.......................Thanks a lot.

  • Is there internet on the train? I know for a fact there isn't wifi.

  • @MachintoshCJ I think you just answered your own question. No, there is no internet, and no, there is no WiFi.

  • I rode the Zephyr from San Fran to Sears Tower, Chicago. From there we caught another one to DC. It was memorable. I want to do it again soon.

  • I will be taking this train from Creston Iowa to Sacramento Ca in July. Can't wait. I started travelling by train a few years ago and I love it. I can't stand flying anymore.

  • @MackLeeGreen

good choice, travel by train is great :)

  • Thanks for the teaser! I will take this ride later the year all the way from San Fransisco to Chicago :-)

  • I love the train, im 15 years Old and almost every year my grandparents take me and my brother ona train to somewhere as a matter of fact my grandparents are on a train right now on their way to new york

  • i had three engienes on the train in co

  • Been on that train, from Chicago to San Francisco. It was a fantastic journey!

  • Excellent going in May

  • Looking forward to trip in May should be awesome

  • Thats one thing I would like to do before I die. Get on a train and go across country. No real destination, just pick and go. We have a beautiful country to see and to see it via train would be awesome instead of just from a car. Thanks for the video .

  • Hello guys. It has been over two years. .

  • I've always to ride this train but never had the opportunity. Thanks for showing the interior of the bi-level cars. Great video!

  • I rode the California Zephyr in the summer of 2010 from Chicago to Denver. I got off in Denver to visit my cousin, but my cousin and I need to ride Amtrak all the way out to San Francisco. I enjoy riding Amtrak and plan to ride other routes for Amtrak.

  • Supprised how empty the train is.

  • Can you go on a balcony on there?

  • @TheBluebird12 Not on Amtrak. But Alaska Railways does have balcony-equipped cars.

  • This was really really helpful. I have to go on a trip from California (on the zephyr and then transfer to another train) to D.C. and back again for work now that airlines are doing virtual strip searching and extreme groping. I haven't taken a train since I was 4, so I really wasn't sure what to expect. Thank you so much for this video!!!

  • focus da CAMERA

  • Love the great views

  • I rode the Rio Grande's Zephyr in 1980 from Denver to Salt Lake City. That was the old Ca Zephyr equip with the vista domes,.....awesome ! Would have liked to ride the old zephyr Chic - Oakland. TRAINS ARE NEAT !

  • The Train really looks nice from both inside and outside.Things are all in orders hence it is a nice choice for a tour.but the worst thing is one need to go all the way to dining room to have dinner.if they were delivered by car attendents then it would have been much better like what they do in India.we passengers sit and enjoy our meals where we are always.they even come and clear them.but one thing i have seen and pretty shocked that such a huge advanced country does not have proper links

  • esse train é 1 luxo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • My family bought Rail passes this summer and went round trip from DEN to SAC (Zephyr) SAC to Klamath Falls on the Coastal Starlight, and then onto Tacoma. What would have cost $1300 per person by airline cost us each $380! Best family trip ever. We had an awesome time on the train. Scenery, scenery, SCENERY! Read books and snacked (bring your own they're not cheap).

  • Excellent video!Beautifull

  • god i want to go on a California Zephyr trip soo bad! soon. I'll be on that train heading to San Fran.

  • How much is it to eat or do you recommend bringing your own snacks?

  • @Kidsmush I definitely recommend bringing your own food. Amtrak food, snacks, and drinks are not cheap. I spent nearly $15 on dinner and it wasn't even that good, but I cannot complain because atleast it was food to eat. I didn't know that I could have brought my own food on the train since I had not been on one since I was a lot younger. The train is nice though, very relaxing & cheaper than flying![only takes a lot longer to get to your destination] : )

  • @copperypeach Really? i thought once you got your train ticket it covered food prices? wow i did not know that. i am planning a trip next summer via amtrak. so now i know to bring food. are you allowed to have cell phones on the train and does it have a bathroom?

  • @TheDoglover777 The meals that are served in the dining car are only paid for if you buy tickets for the private sleeper cabin, otherwise the tickets for couch class does not include the meals in the dining cars. Yes, you can use your cellphones, laptop computers, audio entertainment equipment, DVD players and all that. Some of the train cars may still not offer AC electrical outlets at all of the seats. There are plenty of restrooms on the lower level deck of the Superliner cars.

  • @copperypeach WOW. I Did not know that. i thought once the train ticket was Purchased then it covered everything

  • Thanks for this video

  • seems like everyone has a seat to their selfs

  • the amtrak trains on the east coast look nothing like these., America truly is a big and beautiful country.

  • @remembawhen thats because long distance train have suplerliners and viewliners. The main reason however is because of the many tunnels on the east coast. Superliner cars are a too high thats why you don't them. Amtrak Capital Limited route (Chicago to DC) are the only ones with Superliners.

  • @robertparmar37 thanks, but trains here aren't quite this awesome all the time. We have some even that go through cities!

  • I wish we had same type of trains same as you have in the usa. but we have

low bridges and tunnels in the united kingdom

  • Very-very curious video for me, thanks a lot for sharing ! I always went to see how the interiors of Amtrak looks like?.

  • Is this trip pretty much start thru or is there stops where you can get out and sight see?

  • hey everyone i am going coach with two friends from NYC to Miami i was wondering how will the ride be i mean i took similar trains before from italy to paris and once from Ukraine to Moscow Russia. But i think the ones in Europe are more faster?...But yea i am paying 266$ roundtrip and was curious how to spend the time reading? Ipod? Laptop?---I hear they provide movies or something. well any help is appreciated nice video very informative.

  • hey, what is the name of that car u started the video?

  • thanks for sharing this

  • Wow... That is really cool. I can't wait to go on amtrak this summer!

  • Awesome video and powerful too! T.C. 5-7-2010

  • Why is the train traveling so slow?

  • I want to travel by train...... I hate flying!!!

  • We're in the early stages of planning a train trip on the west coast. Your video was the first I came across. We've ridden the train from Atlanta to D.C. a few times and once from Morristown, NJ to NYC. Last year we drove around Wyoming, Utah, Arizona and Arizona and were just blown away by the scenery. I'll be checking out the rest of your videos. Thank for sharing.

  • Thanks for the video of what the CA Zephyr is like.

We are taking our first trip on it in a few months.

  • Good vid but I couldn't help noticing how old the train looked!! It appeared very basic and tinish.

  • Nice trip, cool train, five stars!

  • Thanks for the video! We plan on taking this as a little sight seeing with the kids! They love trains!

  • Interesting that there are 120V outlets at the seats. The last time I went back east on Amtrak, I had to charge up my phone using one of the outlets in the observation car.

  • DO they really go that slow!?!?!??!?!?!? ☺2☻☺

  • They only go slow in very mountainous areas and where there's a lot of curvature. This particular train runs at 79 MPH on many stretches of its route between San Francisco and Chicago. But the "best scenery" generally means rugged terrain = 30--40 MPH for stretches.

  • No. But Amtrak's California Zephyr as well as Amtrak's Empire Builder goes through extreme rugged terrain. It will pick up speed when the terrain is not as rugged.

  • No... they don't

  • Kind of funny how every time you entered a new car everyone in that car stared at you then went back to doing whatever.

  • I have a crush on amtrack trains, they are like the most fun part of the trip! haha

  • Is it safe to travel with your laptop? I'll be traveling alone, what do you recommend doing? Did you encounter any shady characters on your trip?

  • I take Amtrak all the time and usually, I have no problems with them. I had my laptop and I always carried it with me or stored it in our closet in our room. We usually get a room because it's private, quiet, and you don't have to put up with shady people. However, Amtrak is very good about their security and if they feel your not safe to travel on, you dont get on board period! In all the years I traveled Amtrak, no worries here. You'll be fine..... hope this helps.

  • i wANT TO Take the coAST STarlight reALLY Badly, but IM NOT EVEN LEGally ALLOWED TO Have A JOB YET. LIVE IN TEXas. AND MY KEYBOard is messing up

  • I commented on this vid. about 2 hrs ago...and it's not here..?? Anyway, great vid.! But was there something I mentioned or asked about that caused it not to show up...? I love trains so I naturally ask questions. Sorry.

  • Sorry about the comment posting time delay. I have my Youtube account settings set to pre-approve comments and it all depends when I can get on line and log in to pre-approve the latest comments that are pending. As to your previous question, the amount of passengers varies from day to day. The train was not all that full when I took this video! It can get crowded during the holiday travel season.

  • So would this be considered a full train? Or close to full (in ridership)?

  • @railadvocate You can not always have a full CZ because of short blocking of seats between Denver and Glenwood Springs. If the train is sold out between these points how are you going to sell a Chicago to west of Denver ticket? That's what happens when you have one train doing the work of 50. It doesn't matter anyway....the Northeast Corridor railroad just wants to spread the costs accross the country.

  • I wanto to take that train from Los Angeles to Chicago to know more about the USA landscape. Do you recommend? or it will be better to rent a car?

  • Last time I rode Amtrak was back when they had that "All Aboard America Fare" program going... I was on the northbound on the Coast Starlight and the train was absolutely packed!! I wish they would bring back that "All Aboard America" program. Aside from it being a cheap was to travel in style, it was (at least for me) an easier to understand fare system. "All Aboard..." was rider/user friendly.

  • Lol at 4:20.

Its funny to see that lone tree in the middel of a desert land

  • i am riding that train in june

  • Ill be riding the Amtrak for the first time this Saturday does anyone know if you can take food on there?

  • spacious american coaches. and clean;) Bravo.

... but u guys still dont have high speed trains...

even in a ex communist eastern european countries have a few hundred miles of bullet -trains that goes at least 170 MPH. Learn fro the Japs- they can thank 30% of bussiness-growth in the 70' s for bullettrains. once built. can be much cheaper than Planes .

  • i'm from Serbia and i'm interested so much in your trains ! Thanks for this video :)

  • @sfafasfasdasdwqrfdas where is serbia if i may ask?

  • Comment removed

  • ON the Pvt cabins inyour opinon is it worth it? An last overall how was the trip, from 1 -10. Reason being i am afraid to fly my price to go to chicago from Ca. is 690 bucks that is coach and if you add the 1100 dollars roughly for the cabin is pretty pricy but again just want to know. Thanks!!!!!!!

  • Nice feel for what it's like to travel by train. I've traveled by train ONCE so far in my life, and I was 5 years old at the time! Stinks! I need to correct that problem. Thanks for the video tour!!

  • i been in that train, for single person its so long and bored ride but for couple or family it could be real fun

  • I'v got a question can you bring your own food and eat it on the train?

  • Yes. Just no alcohol that hasn't been purchased on the train

  • this is a blast from the past. i spent a month traveling on amtrak when they offered the north american rail pass. i took the zephyr from chicago to emeryville and back. fantastic trip. thanks for the video.

  • Great Vid thanks for the Vid Tour of this train, I think I might go on that ride.

  • I was surprised on how good the food was in the diner car. It's kinda neat how they will sit people to tables.

  • thanks for the walkthrough -- I never really knew how Amtrak was on the inside.. I could see doing a day but not a 2-3 trip so this will give me something to keep in mind.

  • Some of the sections of the train that I did not show are the private sleeper cabins, etc. For 2 to 3 days, you would want to consider getting a private cabin, kind of like a mini hotel on rails, but obviously, you would pay a much higher fare!

  • If you catch it at the right time, you can get a roomette for only $190 additional. And when you get get a sleeping compartment, they provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner for free.

  • and sometimes NOT even that. IF u are smart, U don't buy online, U wait until u get on the train and U ask the conductor is there a Roomette avail. 90% of time yes. AND they will give u a cheaper fare. THEY want to make money.!!!!

  • How long was the ride?

  • It was just over 12 hours. The train departed the Denver Union Station at 8 AM and arrived in Provo, Utah at about 10 PM or so.

  • tx for the post.. am travellling tomorrow to LA from chicago.. needed to know if they have power outlets

  • Some of the Amtrak cars do and some don't.

Ask the conductor after you board the train if you can be seated in a car that has an AC outlet by the seat.

  • They have at least one per room.

  • i wanna go on a train i havnt been on one for a long time!

  • dude thats cool , thanks for sharing .

  • In November/December 1992, I rode the Desert WInd from Fullerton (riding the San Diegan from San Diego), where it coupled with the CA Zephyr in Salt Lake City, and got off in Denver. Boy, what a beautiful train ride that was between Grand Junction and Denver. I made the same trip in reverse a week later. There was snow on the hillsides alongside the Colorado River. Just beautiful. The Desert Wind no longer exists.

  • dude i love the cali zaphir

  • Yes, it is one of the most scenic routes in the USA that Amtrak takes.

  • Sweet a bar in the lounge, now I have an idea for when I'm on this train in December, good video

  • That One Big train , Bloody hell i wish england had trains like that look at the space wow , you americans know a few things about building trains ,

  • im going on on of those from Seattle to Montana next Wednesday.

I get motion sick on boats but not in cars

would i get motion sick on a train?

  • Probably not. If you can handle a bus or even a subway, I'd say you'll do fine.

But then again, you never know until you try. Steer clear of the pizza they serve, for good measure.

  • I get motion sick in cars and sometimes boats, but the train didn't bother me much. If the train is getting started and there are other train cars outside the window, this can easily make you dizzy, but other than that, it's pretty comfortable traveling.

  • its to bad they dont show movies on the long distance trains any more

  • i remember as a child that the snack bar used to serve excellent mac and cheese!

  • I'm taking amtrak for the first time in about 2 weeks, taking the Empire Builder from Minneapolis to Chicago, then the Cardinal from Chicago to Washington, DC

  • What do smokers do on amtrak trips? From their website, they state smoking is strictly forbidden!!!

  • I dont know if the still do it but certain stops they use to let people get off and smoke as long as you dont go to far from the train. but that was mostly long distance train trips and at stops that were like 20 min stops

  • Nice scenery. Looks fun.

  • Correction, The Zephyr runs from Chicago to Emeryville California

  • Comment removed

  • Hi reminded me of the 6 weeks i spent going from new york to san francisco all by train or bus this year after I got made redundent. Hope to come back to usa one day and ride a few of them Amtrak trains.

  • It's very different from what we get here. The idea of double decker trains running here in Scotland wouldn't sit well with me. I love our multiple units the way they are.

Still, I wouldn't mind trying out on of these things when I'm in the US. Bet it couldn't beat on of our Class 390 Pendolinos, Class 91 InterCity 225s, or Class 170 Turbostars

  • Very different from what we have over here. The idea of Double Decker trains running on our lines here in Scotland doesn't sit wouldn't sit well with me. But it looks like a nice, long distance train.

Bet it couldn't beat one of our Class 390 Pendolinos, Class 91 Intercity 225s or First ScotRail's Caledonian Sleeper (Class 67 or 90!)

  • I'll be taking my first train ride ever tomorrow night... heading down to Orlando for vacation. I'm really psyched about it. (:

  • Did you know, if you hold your camera around 4:19 still, and get to copies of this movie and offset the time of one movie, layer the images, you get a stereo view of the scenery?

  • Are the seats on this train comfy? I have to take this train to Colorado from Iowa next month.

  • I would reccomend bringing a blanket and small pillow as well as reading material or laptop. It gets cool at night on the train.

  • at least the trains are still running !!

  • My first amtrak ride was on the Cardinal from Charleston to Washington D.C!

Yes I went in to the lounge car. But this was back in May of 2000 I was 9 and I'm still looking foward to take amtrak again.

  • Awesome Video Quality. I bought the Sony straight away after seeing this....what Video settings did you use for this? Purely Awesome!

  • too bad there's no roofless trains ... so beautiful country I would defenetly smoke a joint there

  • i bet a lot of people were looking at you when taking this video

  • Great photo I was on the Empire Builder/Lake Shore Limited in 2005 it was lots of fun the trip was from Portland, OR to New York Penn

  • im going to north carolina thursday is 21 hours do u recomend me the train?

  • nice video. you should take a look at mine.

  • The second engine #94 already pulled a train I was on before.

  • amtrak is crap in many ways..theonly reason to ever take it is for the scenery. But, the northeast corridor usually has some quality to it...since Amtrak owns many of the rails themselves.

I read an article that said the best Amtrak train in America would be the laugh stock of Bulgaria's train system...that's how far behind it is..and the government doesn't care.

  • Who cares about Bulgaria? Our airflight and auto travel the best in the world.

  • Indeed even Bulgaria's rail travel is better. But look at the UK or France's network, your once daily express inter-city trains European counterparts are ran every 20 mins or so, and are much better for the economy than airflight or auto travel because it is extra infrastructure, yet another means of travel. Oh, and London Heathrow is the world's busiest airport in terms of international passenger traffic. It is the world's second busiest airport in total passenger traffic and the United Kingdom

  • fun!

  • it's so empty

  • great video!

  • I rode the train-both ways- Chicago to Emeryville, a few years back.

No WAY would I ride in coach. First class is the only way to go.

  • gunna take Regional to Virginia Beach soon

  • yeah i'm going on a amtrak train from DC to Orlando florida to disney this summer, cant wait.

  • hey thanks dude,in 2 weeks im going to be on an 18 hour ride to chicago from DC, now i know what to expect on these long trains. how smooth is the ride? does coach have electrical outlets for laptops, mp3 players, other. any other entertainment options? anything crazy fun you can have? as you can see, i am a first timer...

    any help appriciated, thanks

  • I've ridden that route! The ride is fairly smooth, although I've heard it's rougher out East than out West. I think there are a few outlets but not many...I don't know, because I traveled in a sleeper car last time I rode. I believe you can rent DVD players in Chicago. I'd google some stuff about Amtrak beforehand so you can read more about it; I read some good suggestions online at various train discussion boards and such. Other advice: take a notebook and write about all the people you meet!

  • I love that train , even of the NJT for by myself

  • I have to say that this is probably the best Amtrak interior view on YouTube... showing real life inside the train on the move..! Enjoyed every bit of it..!

  • The food and comfort are moderate. I took the Empire Builder from Chicago to Portland and it was a fairly good trip.

I remember ordering some "fancy" sounding dish of Italian pasta, and it tasted like chefboyardee. lol. Just remember to not sit near the bathrooms because after two days on a train.... well it smells like shit.

  • Did you ride in coach or in a sleeper? My kids and I are riding coach from LA to Portland next week.

  • Why would you do that to your kids?? I rode coach from Los Angeles to Redding and barely caught a wink, the seats do not recline enough to sleep comfortably.

  • Nice tour. Thanks for sharing.

  • thanks for the video. this just made me make up my mind not to do amtrak! or i should say for a long period of time. anything over 2 hours its a no go

  • Great video -thanks my four year old son and I are planning our trip on the Zephyr

  • I love those pusch doors!

  • Nice video. I've taken the Zephyr to Grand Junction, CO before. Looks like this clip you're climbing up the Front Range.

  • nice vid

  • good video. my wife and i are planning a trip in july on amtrak to north carolina and this is a good idea what coach class is like. are the seats comfortable? food good?

  • They're not bad. I've been on several train trips across country. It does get old about the 3rd day, but other than that i love it!

  • i'm taking this train from chicago to denver...i've never ridden on a train before. it looks nice.

  • This video had to be posted, now I have to get back on a train..nothing like watching scenery go by in areas normally not seen by people on major roads :)

  • Cool! This guy knows how to create good videos.

  • Did you have internet access on de train?

  • i am there

i spent two weeks traveling amtrak coast to coast to coast in september

im back in my for 90 days

  • Im Going To San Francisco On Amtrak 8 Hours Wow!!

  • try 48

  • I'd like to go on a long distance train.

  • the observation car is beautiful

  • Thats Right!
