The multitrack tape recorder that Les Paul used to record his music was especially built by 3M. Yes 3M built recorders at one time. They built one track, two and three track recorders for use by professional in-studio. They were in competition with Ampex, which was more widely used for studio recording. Bing Crosby popularized Ampex by being the first musical performer to record his radio shows on tape for later playback, rather than do the same show for east & west coast shows.
When their shows were being broadcast in the early 1950s, TV was still young, and I was just a child. Their "sound" intrigued me! If I recall correctly, each one of their shows was on for only 15 minutes!!! LG
Les Paul born June 9, 1915 in Waukesha Wisconsin.
The Gibson Les Paul line of guitars is universally hailed as the best and is played by legendary musicians, Iridium has been the host to countless musicians and celebrities who pay homage to 'The Father Of The Electric Guitar'. such as, Paul McCartney, Keith Richards, Tony Bennett, Paul Schaeffer, Steve Miller, Brian Setzer, Joe Beck, Al Dimeola, George Benson and many others have 'jammed' with Les on Monday nights at Iridium.
THere is an American Master documentary that has all kinds of stuff on it...these Listerine shows are on the extras, and also a whole show at the Iridium in new york...where les played mondays...and you get the tour of Les' place...
Yah, I've seen the American Masters documentary. It is tremendous, a treasure of musical history. However, I didn't see the extras vids. I'll take a look. Thanks.
Boy! white guys must have had it good back in the 50s, because nowadays Jane could have a mouth full of shit and still have men queued up around the block begging to pay all of her bills in perpetuity.
Les Paul was just a bucket of talent! Our local talk show host, Lee Rogers (KSFO) used to work with him (believe Chicago) and said he would stand and ride the record turntable.
Les' sound is a result of using his homemade guitar, "The Klunker" which had a steel plate under the top. He also only uses low impedance pickups. The rest is Les' secret recipe!
This 5 minute series was nationally syndicated in 1954-'55, 'kogvos', but probably because DuMont filmed this series, it was seen exclusively on New York on DuMont's WABD-TV [Channel 5]...
DUMONT was the original third television network, before ABC got going. Based out of East Paterson N J, they made everything. A full line of consumer TV receivers was where the most money came in but, they made a full line of studio equipment, including high power TV transmitters. Allan B. Dumont was probably the most inventive pioneer of early TV. Channel 5 NYC was WABD. Somehow they lost out when TV became a really mass produced commodity.
I definitly recommend any up and coming guitarist to become influenced by his playing, think about it , Jeff Beck admitted taking quite a few licks from Les and you can definitly hear that.
That was the "dirty litle secret" of this filmed series- Les & Mary basically "synched" to their Capitol recordings, because it was impossible for them to recreate their recorded sound on camera! But viewers didn't mind.....
This gentleman Les Paul was pure magic. He not only pioneered many guitar techniques but also multi-tracking! But perhaps the most magical thing about him was how he was able to get such a LOUD sound out of a guitar that was NOT even PLUGGED into an AMP!

Any of these jam sessions ever videoed? They would be priceless musical treasures if archived.

Worst I ever saw was Van Morrison on some 60s show doing 'Moondance' with nothing but a curtain behind him. No band, no mic, no makeup.
I blame the producers.

(Look again) Les was so good he didn't even need to plug in a guitar with no pickups.
