Yeah,as a drummer I can say without doubt that this is definitely the Tony Williams-Herbie Hancock group recorded May '63 in New York.On the Frank Butler-Vic Feldman version recorded a month earlier in Hollywood,Butler starts the tune on brushes though moves to sticks for the rest of the tune.Check out "Seven Steps:Complete Recordings 1963-64"
Thanks again, Jck! Wonderful take and the group sounds surprisingly similar to the one in New York. Makes you wonder if perhaps THEY have listened to this recording.
Frank Butler plays his tail off and Victor has missed the opportunity of the lifetime when he turned down Miles in order to continue his studio work. But then again he had a family to take care of and Miles was notoriously unreliable those days...
Great upload. Never knew about this recording. It probably is Frank Butler on drums & I know he's a great drummer but damn he sure sounds a lot ike Tony Williams in certain places. I'm going to have to check out the album again. Thanks for sharing this.

This IS Tony on drums

@rogerjonesII you're correct.
On April 16-17, 1963, Miles did 5 takes of this tune in the Columbia Studios
in Los Angeles. Victor Feldman played piano, and Frank Butler was on drums.
Miles shelved that session and returned to New York.
In May he recorded the tune again, a rehearsal take, and a final take.
Herbie Hancock replaced Victor Feldman on piano, and Tony Williams
replaced Frank Butler on drums.

Thanks Jack. I think Big George did some of his finest work while with Miles.
