I love this song. I remember listening to this song on my moms old record player. This really made me want to go into the music industry, but unsuccessfully. I make music, but in the confines of my classroom.
This is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard, and I have been in the music industry for many years. The texture flavor and feeling of the Hawaiin Islands and the beauty of the flowing harmonies, just entrancing! I just love it! Glad I found it here, and I've forwarded it to all my friends. Marty Robins version is sweet but this take sthe prize! I sing it all the time and I try to mimic the Hawaiin lyrics. The sound is beatiful and makes my heart very happy, I hope yourstoo
Thanks for posting. My dad is a first cousin of Ledward and Nedward. I remember my grandmother playing Hui Ohana songs everytime I went to visit her. Good memories : )
@lucabrazi83 There are plenty videos sof Dennis Pavao (he is singing lead on this song) as well as ones of Ledward Kaapana and Nedward Kaapana who played guitar and bass. You can also search for Hui Ohana -- there are no videos of them together but you can find other songs by them. There are wonderful videos of Dennis Pavao from maybe 20 years ago, way before he passed away.
This is beautiful!!! I've lost count of the times I have viewed and listened to this video. Who is the artist doing this song?I have got to have this music.
Me too. Between this and Debra Paget dancing to the song, I have heard and seen a lot of Kalua.
Very lovely music. I rank it there with Harry Owens song "Sweet Leilani" for being such wonderful music in the old school of Hawaiian-type music. Thanks for posting.
As folks have mentioned, the group was Hui 'Ohana -- you can find this version of the song on "The Best of Hui 'Ohana", Vol. 1 -- Amazon carries the CD/legal MP3s if you can't find this at your local stores. The falsetto lead vocals are by the late Dennis Pavao, the backing vox are Ledward and Nedward Ka'apana. Led, Ned, and Dennis all did solo albums too, so if you like Hui 'Ohana you will probably enjoy their individual records, too. :)
This was danced by actress Debra Paget in the 50's movie "Bird of Paradise". First time I saw that movie, I knew I wanted to learn to dance to it too. In the movie, Kalua, the chief's daughter picked her haole husband with this song/dance.
Nicely done...by the way where/what is Kalua? I know a song called Dreamy Kalua, but thought it must be Kailua, as it was written by a bunch of Haolies:p. I did a search in a translator and nothing came up for kalua. I'd appreciate any response. many thanks
"lua" can have several different meanings, including some less than romantic ones! But this song was originally written in English for the 50's movie "Bird of Paradise"; Kalua is the name of the heroine. I suspect the scriptwriters just made up with a name that they thought sounded pretty and vaguely Hawaiian without worrying about whether it meant something or not. ;)

Kalua is a surname. The surname is roughly the equivalent of Pitt.
