Brkix, you answered the question i was having in mind. I am quite new to this GPS tech. I've been making some colored prints of satellite photos in my country to help me on my planned vacation this Jul'08. Anyway, I said, why not I buy a GPS instead of doing the PrintScreen and pasting in Word, and writing the text on the printed maps (I get the text portion from Wkmapia). So you will notice, I want to save money. But I guess I can afford a Garwin. But hey, with a N95, I will save a lot. Thks.
free, well good for you. What does your cell phone service cost you? It's a cost option for most people. Of course you must understand that for an automobile, the best GPS is one that is purpose made for it, ie not one that works off a phone. Ciao!
i pay 15 euros monthly for usual gsm services, with additional 5 euros for 512 mb data transfer on 3.2 Mbit hsdpa network.
Finnaly you understood. This is exactly why i have nuvi 360, witch i trasfer to one of two cars i have. nuvi has better and bigger screen, and better car holder, this is true.
both devices are perfect for what they were made for.
The "Acquiring Satellites" part really depends on where you are. In your case, your cell phone had better signal than your GPS. That's no way to compare. There is a plethora of things that makes a dedicated GPS unit much better than a cellphone. However, the upcoming nuvifone should solve that.
whereever you put them, a-gps function tells nokia exactliy where she is, only needs to pinpoit location. while nuvi fist needs to download almanac from one of satts, witch can take some time if signl is not perfect.
in nokia maps they included locating over cells, so when you start app second it knows with accuracy of 200 meters where you are, and after 20-3o sec, when gps kicks in pinpoits exact location. i still use nuvi in car, because of touchscreen, but everythng else is better on n95
Dude, the point here its not what you are talking about. Both gps have about the same signal, the point here is that the nokia is configured to get the sattelites signal via gprs too, that means that it aquires the signal preety faster, but it will cost you some money.
There's a way of making it completely free, but the signal will need more time to fix.
How much data transfer does it really need to get an 'assisted' fix ? I'm guessing far under a single megabyte. For me that costs me less than making a 10 seconds phone call. It doesn't really bother me that I have to spend that tiny amount to get a fix under 5-15 secs.
Since I don't have a separate Garmin device and have only tried Garmin XT on my n82, I can say that OviMaps is much faster and more responsive than Garmin interface; Garmin may however run better on a Garmin device though.
So many uses? Ok, then you can sell me on them by listing them instead of just mouthing off....it'd better be worth the $5 - $15 / month you pay for this (having a faster power on response won't make a difference to most people). You should also get a faster fix on a Nuvi than 4+ minutes, maybe 1 - 2 minutes. Clearly, yours is not a scientific experiment.
dowhat 5-15$? it is absolutely free. i use garmin xt for symbian, with exactly the same map like in nuvi (adriaroute 2.0) wit difference that garmin on nokia has far more options than nuvi. it records tracks, automatically dowload traffic conditions, weather update, ability to call POI automaticaly, and so on. other functionalitys with gps on mobile phone are numerous. few of them: geotag photos taken with phone and instant upload to flickr, locr, or facebook, geocaching with geocache navigator
big deal, you pay for the cell phone GPS service, which won't work in non-service areas. The GPS nav device connects directly to the satellites, which ultimately gives you more accurate positioning along with more features like text to speech, 3 D view, business find etc for no extra cost. I would get rid of the GPS functionality from the phone, unless you enjoy showing off to your friends.
Garmin starts much faster outside.. And if you start it at the same location where you turned it off ;) Anyway, you don't need it inside

devices were side by side during test.

By location, I mean house or neighborhood, not their place on the table. That makes no difference.
