Blast from the past! I was about 6 and they used to play this in school in the afternoons. Forgotten about it for years and I had a dream last night about it. Crazy that I found it...
@playgirlc Glad to know I'm not the only one who found this animated guy quite hot. Lol! As a kid, I always hoped the guy I married would have long hair like him :-)
Zonk me in the brain why don't ya? Holy... every Sunday for years... watching this show... hated I had to go to school the next day... Ah... the memories.
The UK Version is up now and the guy sounds a bit like a cockney and his name in England is John..Just type in Storyteller UK- Storyboad International. :-)
Can anyone post some episodes on Youtube of the Storyteller? or can one buy the DVDs? I've been singing this tune on and off for so many years (over 20!) and its lovely to have located it at last. such good memories of good, wholesome TV for all ages :)
Wow!!Memories!!!We use to watch it after lunch,Sundays. There was always a moral to the stories and any age could watch it....not like the crap thats on t.v nowadays. In my country we had both versions of the song and the original version was ...in england i am john!!
Interesting. In my non-English version it said "In America" but it was all in my non-English mother tongue. So wich one is the real deal? It would be strange if my country's version was translated from a non-original source (beacause they would always translate from originals). Regardless, it was an awesome show that woked me up every Saturday.
Ive been searching for this intro and theme for years, and had recently came to the realisation that I may never see it again. All I could vividly remember of the theme was the beginning line, "I'm a storyteller, and my stories must be told..." lol I was literally in tears finally getting to see this again after all these years, and the theme song is incredibly moving and sad.:( Many thanx to ugljevikbo for posting this, and finally ending my long search for this classic intro. You rock! xD
I feel certain that when the series was originally shown here (the UK) in the early 80's, it was called simply "The Storyteller". I could be wrong though. lol What is definitely true though, is the series was originally produced for British childrens TV, which explains why the original lyrics were "in England I am John". This was obviously changed later to "In America,," when it was later shown internationally. Hope this clears up the confusion over the changed lyrics! lol
From america... im john, lol omg i remember it from the uk, its probs a usa adaption to sell it to the yanks, i could not believe it when i heard it, others i see have picked it up
Don't think I ever actually watched this, but I loved sweet little fox at the beginning - ha, always an animal lover, think I have been from birth!! :)
@cujo9 I also remember it being 'In England I am John'. I'm not even English but Scottish, but agree they shouldn't have altered it not least because 'America' has too many syllables to fit comfortably in the lyrics
@repo136 There's a person that has loads of old-school British TV uploads on their channel like The Moondial, DramaRama etc.. I might see if they've got it. I think they get them from old VHSs or something.
@hackneydemon08 you have alzheimers. it was 'in ENGLAND i am CHARLES'! either access your memory banks, comb your VHS collection or travel back in time...either way its 'CHARLES'. Even though I'm a solicitor I will punch anyone who dares to challenge this fact.
@topholewhat0 You may be a solicitor but you are still a fuckwit. It's John. Think about it, Johann, Jan etc. Its John not Charles. Actually come to think about it of course you're a fuckwit, you're a solitor.

A moron comment like yours can only reveal the British inferiority complex towards Americans. This show is produced in Canada, which comprises a part of North America last time I checked.
The original version says "In England, I am John" not "in America, I am John"... That sounds silly...
Can't even think of a well-known piece of American Storytelling? Apart from maybe Washington Irvine's tales... but even they were based on European tales such as Grimms.
thanks for this amazing memorable upload, many good memories. - one of my favourite childhood programs - probably won't be long before youtube take it down because of copyright - so enjoy it while you can
Wow, finally...I found kindred spirits in here. Haha. Like many of you, I've been looking for this for ages!!!!! I've asked lots of people about this animated series for many, many years, but nobody seems to know of this show. I didn't know that it was "In England I am John", because I only knew the part that said "In America I'm John"...and when I think about it now, most of the stories were european and sometimes narrated because they wern't in english..so glad I found it here now. Thanks YouTube:)
