  • @mrjingles77 he uses a chorus effect

  • This is the song that plays when you finally beat mario and you get in princess peaches level.

  • btw, what kind of a bass does he use? (the brand name?)

  • @Basstard22 It's a Tung bass.

  • @amaningd thanks for the info!

  • @Basstard22 Very very rare basses as only around 100 were made, a few have been destroyed, and John owns 4 of them i believe

  • @AttitudeCastle Always a shame if beautiful basses like these get destroyed.. I wonder why..

  • @Basstard22 Bad situations I guess? people being careless? Sad indeed :(

  • @Basstard22 Tung,

  • Unbelieveable! This is marvelous. I'm an instant fan of Mr. Myung.

  • What the fuck is the first pattern he's playing?

  • DARN!! it makes me wanna learn to play bass!! >.< damn it!, i have to save up again to buy a bass....

  • This dude NEVER shuts up, jeez.

  • Simplismente, o melhor baixista de todos '-'

  • stop he!!!!!!!!

  • Dude blows me away. So great to be able to hear him in the mix now again on the new DT album. Haven't had much JM since FIF.

  • oh...STOP TALKING MYUNG!!

  • the end sounds like "wither"

  • @zeppelin25101980 I think it sounds like you're stupid.

  • @passion4drums that

    s cool

  • for some reason bass harmonics remind me of sega genesis music :)

  • @fivefinger100 It's cuz the bass harmonics sound incredibly like a midi harmonics

  • @Manuel8104 um no, don't ever try and be clever again. his bass playing is WAY too good to be in a such a film.

  • HOLY FU-..

Either I'm really high or I heard him talk.

  • @frysmaktoff It's not that big of a deal you know.

Bassist are known to keep their coolness on stage they dont show off much..

but when they do you'll be drolling

    :)

  • Gasm.

  • I love this music..thanks for uploading this...!!!

  • Ears are cum.

  • sounds like video game music

  • Truly the master of bass, JM is such an incredible player.

  • It's something about those harmonics.

  • This guy is a genius!

  • that first song was so amazing im buying a 6 string just to play it..

  • Why the hell isn't he writing songs for DT anymore?....

  • @08Revelator He's writing a song in the new album! XD

  • @08Revelator The song Breaking All Illusions was written by him on the new album. James confirmed it in a new interview.

  • @usernamessuck58

    sweet....well.... that's 1 since Learning to Live.

  • @08Revelator He did Lifting Shadows Off a Dream, Trial of Tears, and Fatal Tragedy after Learning to Live.

  • @usernamessuck58

lol I know. I was just saying. He's the best song writer out of them all, in my opinion. So lets see...4 out of about 100 songs. And three out of the four are in my top5 favorite DT songs.

  • @usernamessuck58 And Take the Time

  • @theclash06013 They were both on the same album, so I don't really count that one.

  • wtf i wasnt expecting that! hes hardcore

  • @MyMytalMajesty Haha :) He ignored one or too but usually just sighed and said "practise makes perfect, know your instument and the music is open to you" or more or less that! :)

  • @MyMytalMajesty He remembered me, which was cool! Well i was the last guy at the meet and greet thing/clinic-y thing each time and he was kind of annoyed as loads of people just kind of asked "How do i play like you?" or "Why are you so awesome?" But i actually talked to him for about half an hour the first time talking about music theory and bass technique! It was awesome! Kind of wierd he flips from being reserved and quiet to quite open! And he humble and awesome! xD

  • @MyMytalMajesty I've met him twice :) I always thought he had huge hands, but they were about the same as mine, and my hands are firmly in the average sided catagory

  • @MyMytalMajesty He actually has small/normal sized hands!

  • i came

  • ery sexy

  • this song should be used in porn

  • @123mrgrillo The porn of God having sex with Cthulhu.

  • @123mrgrillo lol. early 90s porn

  • oh my god, he speaks!!!!!!

  • This is one of the best things I have ever heard...

  • I'm pretty sure I heard this the last time I masturbated

  • Total Eargasm...

  • he made that bass sing.

  • what is the name of this song?

  • he have a demonic skills maybe he sold he's soul to the devil.. JUST KIDDING :D

  • @droga187 I think the devil would sell his soul to Myung to play bass like that :P

  • Comment removed

  • from what DVD is this?

  • @ustingnumber9 John Myung: Progressive Bass Concepts

  • @aft3rgl0w thanks :)

  • ciao vecchio..

  • cool dude...

  • Did anybody else start to hear the rest of the band in their mind join in to lifting shadows once he started playing?

  • ... jeez.. He should do a solo album.

  • @LEFT4BASS I play guitar and my opinion is that they are both very great instruments that take years of dedication and skill to master. Neither is better.

  • @EpicUberMan1000 I agree

  • Does anybody knows whats the song he is playing at the very beginning of the video? .Thanks :).

  • @Chorofonfilo pretty sure that's just a jam he made up... it does sound cool though doesn't it!

  • @soopahsoopah Just a jam!, lol, he is incredible man I love the feel from it. You rule, thanks.

  • My friend keeps arguing that guitar is better. He and his friend thought that you couldn't do harmonics on a bass. This is going to his profile right now.

  • @LEFT4BASS

how old is your friend? 10?

  • @FavioRiveros 17 LOL

  • It is my goal in life to play this.

  • His tone is utterly amazing

  • Bass harmonics are ear candy to me.

  • @Jzmt77 too all..splendid

  • Bass harmonics are just ear candy.

  • he has a really cool style. this vid is cool

  • I read in an Interview mit Mike Portnoy (when he still was a member of DT) that he barely ever saw Myung allthough they only live 2 blocks apart. That's because Myung practises for around 9 hours a day.

  • @Paeddyful lol that would make sense, John Myung is probably one of the most dedicated musicians on earth

  • @Paeddyful

That doesnt even surprise me at all.

  • my goal in life is to try to achieve the skill this guy has on bass, ive only been playing for a month and im in love with this

  • @AuraxyrenSol dam well all I gotta say is good luck, & don't block any forms of music, because studying all genres is good, hopefully you become a badass bassist :D

  • @AuraxyrenSol

sorry man, but unless you wrote that from the womb, its suuuuuper unlikely that that will happen

  • @AuraxyrenSol 3 words... practice practice practice... dont let anyone tell you that you cant

  • @JThrashYT Damn right.

  • C'mon, guys, don't be sad...just another 1,000 hours of practice and we'll be somewhere in this guy's league :)

  • @pengyou55, More like 10,000 hours..

  • more like 10,000 days (tool reference)

  • i´ve never heard anything like 1:03 -1:23 oO

sooooo beautiful but sad at the same time

  • @smufmigeifmig The whole song feels this way. He wrote the lyrics too. I'd recommend to listen to it if you didn't; it's a nice way to spend 6 minutes in a lifetime :D

  • Wow! How does he get that clean harmonic sound on the second fret?

  • @Jontish316 A lot of practice. This guy has an insane practice regimen, which is mainly why he is as awesome as he is.

  • is he using natural harmonics or artificial harmonics in the first part? ive spent all afternoon learning harmonics and now i feel depressed after watching this

  • @Jibblington

    pretty sure there nat harm's

  • @stridren Oh, but they are.

  • what is that bass?

  • This guy is so freakin good, it's just ridiculous.

  • i think he Myung is the only bass player that can stand opposite to billy sheehan and say "hey dude, that's wrong, it goes like this..."

  • @sweeney665

Nah, they are equal in their own regards,

each would have their own way, both impossible for mere mortals of bass

  • Awesome - I love how he makes those harmonics ring! Very melodic.

  • Uhhh....yeah, I can totally do that. lol...Seriously though, gotta love John, god among bassists. :D

  • How much of what I'm seeing here is purely talent as opposed to years of training and training - I suppose though, it is a huge combination of both...........

  • @dulamel305

Its hard work. That's it. No one's born to play bass (or to do anything for that matter). Some people may have advantages that help (i.e. bigger hands, longer fingers), but it all boils down to how hard you work to something. I read he practices 6+ hours a day. And I'm sure if you took any professional musician, they would all be practicing at least 6 hours a day (I've heard that some do 10-12).

  • @BassGuitarGuy128 You do need a good dose of imagination (and feel) to compose stuff though. Say I could learn bass just by downloading a program into my brain just like in the Matrix, i doubt i could compose any of what these guys are able to create.

  • @BassGuitarGuy128 Makes sense..............thanks for the response!!

  • By and far one of my favorite bassists (next to Victor Wooten, and Getty Lee)

  • @dulamel305 Geddy*

    Right on.

  • i wish he had made that longer, it would have made a great song

  • Damn, he's a sick bass player. I mean I've known it for years but being a DT fan I haven't really heard him in the mix too well since Falling Into Infinity haha.

  • @zombiebassist1994 you have a sick mind

  • @LestatHalloween HIGH 5

  • @zombiebassist1994

    Yes. I actually do

  • @RandomoVideos HIGH 5

  • @zombiebassist1994

    *High 5*

  • @zombiebassist1994 THATS INCREDIBLE

  • There is no best bass player, and never will be, cause they got they're own style xD, does no one realize it, come on xD, and fuck the subjective polls and reviews of all those magazines xD

  • @joost1795 in playing the bass from a tecnical point of view its hard to find someone better that john

  • @ryonafan There's always a bigger fish

  • @joost1795 in this case no, there is not :)

  • wow, i could watch him do that all day

  • In spite of how shite Dream Theatre is, I love this riffing

  • @Monumentum616 Go fuck your self and listen to slow em all you homo you have no clue what you are talking about , obviously your a dick in box so get lost you know nothing about Dream Theater .Faggot

  • @METALLMAN1000 You come across quite well there. Let me taste your tears!

  • @Monumentum616 Listen and tell me what the world would say

  • oh waw, he actually can talk!

  • the harmonics thing is BAD-ASS!

even with the booklet i have no idea how to do it=\

  • @TheBassMan533 where did you get the booklet?

  • @MetalBassist1234

    i downloaded it~_~

    just search john myung booklet

    or something.

    youll find it.

  • First exercise should be called "Solar Groove" cuz I see rays of light from heaven when he plays... Celestial genius!

Second harmonics example is suuuuuuper spooky!

  • Amazing! He can talk!

  • 0:20 - 0:40 amazing groove.

  • Stop comparing two different styles. You guys look retarded doing so.

  • hey I got a question how do you do harmonics on the bass?

  • @Cropse666

Touch lightly a string and hit the string with your picking hand

  • @validcode thank you but do touch the string on the fret board or with your picking hand because I saw this dude doing it that was?

  • @Cropse666

    /watch?v=nY4s-pmdHGU

  • fuck victer wooten

  • is this a piece from a song or did he develop it just for this vid?

  • @darrenedesignedu The first demo was for this video only, while the second one is from a song.

  • OK, what the hell is 'G major 7 flat 5'?as he says at 1:00?

  • @FlaKey651 A G major chord with the 7th added in, and a flattened 5th.

  • @FlaKey651 It's a chord consisting of the notes G, B, D flat, F sharp.

  • @Sqaarg ohh... I am really crap with music theory. thanks.

  • @FlaKey651 No problem, it might be worth it to invest some more time in it, it can help you out a lot ;)

  • John Myung seems like the only member of DT I'd want to be compared to as a musician. Portnoy seems like he's a bit arrogant (not really bad, just annoying), Petrucci seems to have lost his edge (in songwriting, not guitar), Rudess... well, Rudess doesn't seem too bad, and LaBrie is just stupid for trying to sing with busted vocal chords back in the Awake tour. Nonetheless, I love DT and wish that Myung would start writing again. His songs are my favorites and his lyrics are out of this world.

  • alright joe satriani chill out

  • that should called weed smoking theme

  • @oldschooltillDeath clearly

  • Guy's damn quiet and reclusive, but when he plays his groove, style, and talent speak louder than any words. Can't get enough of his solo vids/songs

  • It's not so much natural talent as much as a product of hard work

    That's not an insult

  • He's the best.

  • He's not the most skilled or talented bass player ever but damn, I just can't explain how much I like what he does.

  • Wow, Myung is sick. I love his silent style. That truely fits him. He's a genius.

  • born genius!!

  • Damn can he make that bass sing.

  • @Tuzioya he can also make that bass speak for him

  • Grandissimo John

  • Has anyone of you the tabs or a note sheep.

I need it badly. It's so gorgeous.

  • cool

  • He plays like gods

  • Who the fuc are those 15 dumbasses that don't like???????
