  • wow that sounded so simple, yet so incredible and crisp! love it

  • thats a huge fucking hihat.

  • that change at 1:28 its like an orgasm to me feels sooo damn good!

  • wich snare is it?!

  • Fantastic!!!!! My man on the guitar puts "it" down & the drummer had some collards and chitlings before this session bcuz he is soooo funky,it's stinkn!!! Can u smell it ? I can......

  • Tighter than a ducks ass in water!

  • That fill at 1:05... you can hear it coming from a mile away, but had he played anything else it would have been so wrong...

  • Pour moi un des plus grand batteur de groove !!! une assise phénoménale, un feeling hors pair ! un de mes maîtres préféré! Didier D'agostino batteur "video groove shuffle funk sur youtube"

  • The best keeper of time.... His funky body is like a human metronome!

  • Damn Steve is a bad dude!! Charlie Drayton too!! Bernie is one of the baddest cats to ever do it

  • TIGHT.

  • Its almost like he doesnt need fills. His chops are so fresh and creative that every time he plays it, it feels like its the first time.

  • I posted Steve Jordan Pick Hits on here for all the Jordan fans...Electric Outlet album...!

  • God exists and it's black!! I love this guy!! STEVE JORDAN got the real groove!

  • 1:28 makes me wet.

  • He knows how to play in the pocket, the finest skill any musician should learn :)

  • He isn't human... Just an organic part of the kit. I could listen to this all day.

  • I have this dvd. those pink hi-hats are the business...

  • "You have to be brash to be in the studio, there's no time to worry about what you're playing, or who thinks what about what you're playing, it really is constant shoot from the hip. Steve is one of those guys who can do that." -John Mayer

  • Is there a way to put videos on repeat? Ive been soloing over this but I keep having to get up and restart it...

  • @chewyflea yeah... jajajaj i did the same.... i made it a track 4min track just 8beats!

  • Respond to this video... is this a special song? whats the name of the song?

  • What a great snare sound and what a great groove ...

  • drum porn

  • by far one of the best, just a cool mother fucker

  • watch this and feel good about playing drums

  • smoked it!

  • ohh Ludwig Downbeat snare!

  • So basic, and yet so difficult to play - to just feel it...

  • I don't doubt him, I don't doubt John Mayer, and I don't doubt Pino Palladino. JM TRIO FOREVER!

  • 0:40 You and me baby, you and me!!

  • does steve jordan EVER make a mistake????

  • Love how the Footage looks old

  • kinda looks like the black version of steve gadd

  • i love steve jordannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn !!!!!!

  • Man! Steve Jordan has so much soul in his playing, even the simplest groves sound like they have fallen from heaven, this man and Steve Gadd are the finest drummers on the planet.

  • @igypsy check out Stanton Moore, pretty good too, somewhat similar style (groove)!

  • I'd love to jam with steve!!

  • some of the funkiest shit i ever heard. triple P-90 hollowbody, damn ,danny sent me back to school fool

  • Simple... syncopated... and patient. Steve's drumming sits in the groove, toys with it a bit, steps up with a fill or two, then it's back into that groove. Can he blow chops? Indeed he can. And the fact that he can but chooses not too contributes to that inner power his playing exudes. I'm not a huge fan (Richie Hayward was more my style of groover) but Jordan understands the musical concept and can park his ego at the door. Abe Laboriel is another. And David Garibaldi. Keep it in the pocket!

  • Sloppy.

  • @Easleytee Good job describing your own timing.

  • @Easleytee maybe danny was but definitely not steve

  • JORDAN WILL ALWAYS BE ONE OF MY FAVORITES, HAD MANY ARGUMENTS WITH OTHER MUSICIANS ABOUT HIS PLAYING.....NEVER COULD GET USED TO THAT CLANGING SNARE SOUND HE AND CHARLEY LIKE SO MUCH! HE'S STILL THE MAN IN MY BOOK!......BUT WHO AM I, ONLY MARVIN!

  • Steve is the farthest thing from a drum machine. He has soul.

  • does he use a yamaha maple custom? and what snare does he use on his side kit when he toured with john mayer?

  • If you'd like to hear Steve playing some more complex jazz fusion type grooves, purchase/download Spyro Gyra - Morning Dance. He plays on the following songs: Jubilee, Starburst and Heliopolis. Excellent stuff.

  • I think steve's too "loud" on this song... didn't hear any volume changes just loud well until maybe 1:30 on the hihat. (dynamics) but still not distinct enough .... soooo No Groove for me here...

I preffer the other steve (Gadd) LOL just kidding about the Gadd part, we should not compare artists.

  • @ezekiel1977 No groove? If you didn't feel the groove in that, you're lost.

  • @ezekiel1977 - Why don't you lay down a groove, post a video and show us how you'd play this song. I'm sure we'd all get a huge, gut-wrenching laugh watching your interpretation of how the drum part should be played.

  • bill hicks on guitar!

  • Wow, this is an infectiously delicious groove that I wish I could play with even 1/10 of the funk and pocket that Steve lays down! Inspiring and incredible!

  • steve knows just where to put that kick in at 0:58 - keeps the suspense going and going and then hits it just when ur not expecting it and it sounds goooooooood

  • dudes sooo groovy

  • S.I.N.E.! simple is not easy... Steve Jordan is immune to a typical musician virus called "the fancy comlex music is always to be good"

nowadays many many musicians forgot what is the GROOVE

  • man i love this. that guitar player is fucking nice, but he's not doing anything crazy. its all in the nuances. he looks coked out or something though, look at how clenched his jaw is

  • @kweerb8 My jaw got clenched by just listening to this. And man, I was sober before I started this video...

  • "u and me baby,u and me!"...ahahaha i love him!!

  • boring

  • @choffan ur missing whats in front of u, u ignorant fuck

  • @choffan - you obviously don't play drums, or for that matter, any instrument at all. You are probably some "Rock Band" expert on the XBox so you think you know what's "good" in terms of music.

    Basically, you're a douche bag!

  • @Dropanobama1 Since I don't want to go find his comment, I'll just ask you. What did he say?

  • @Dropanobama1 well, I'm actually a drummer and I do like smart people like Carter Beauford. I don't see reasons to support modest attempts such this

  • @choffan Yeah your a drummer alright, now learn to become a musician. Carter is his own being, Steve is his own. You like Carters bombastic flashy style thats great. Steve on the other hand is the opposite, total servant to the groove. Now google Steve's name, yeah a shit load of sessions have his drumming all over it, Carter...DMB...and a handful of other projects....... Steve is modest in his playing a personality, its what gets you gigs.

  • @choffan If you really feel that way, good luck ever making a living as a drummer; besides playing in some cover band that plays bars once a week. You might be a drummer, but that doesn't mean you actually know what it is to be a drummer. Learn about all the other pieces of the music puzzle, then go back to your drums and you might understand.

  • @choffan poor you...

  • @choffan ^stupid

  • are ghost notes the same thing as grace notes?

  • @kweerb8 No, there are quite a few differences. Grace notes are short notes that follow directly before or after the "main" note (Ie the one it's gracing). Ghost notes are simply quiet notes that can be played at any time.

If you do a quick youtube search for grace notes and then listen to this video you should spot the difference quite quickly and it will probably be more explanatory than what I said.

  • The Greatest drummer right now

  • ghost notes? i hear them ! not ghost at all....and they sound SO damn GOOD!

  • steve jordan is a real example of a black man with his head on strait

  • steve always had SJC drums?

  • @inri12

Nope , he's endorsed by yamaha

  • No, Yamaha. I know what you're talking about though, the hoops make it look like SJC.

  • Woooooooooow i would jam with him til' my fingers fell off.

  • Deeper Pocket Than Bill Gates but probably poor as a musician.

  • Those ghost notes are SO tight.

  • This guy has been doing this stuff for years!!! Hes a big name when you start talkin with the Big Acts! Clapton, Berry, Richards. King, Keyes, Mayer. I dont even play drums and i wish i knew this guy! haha!

  • See SoulDrummers . com to see more about Mr. Steve Jordan.

  • He's so alive with his drumming.

    Nothing stupid flashy or ignorant.

    It's like ... I don't even know.

I wish I had his groove, man.

  • This dude is beast, I've been trying to play like him for years.

    Funk at its finest.

  • fuckin love steve jordans playing

  • Steve is all about heart and soul. That's all that matters y'all

  • zigaboo

  • inspirational

  • 1:28 starts the real groove.. simple, but works perfect with the bass and the guitar

  • Jordan has always rated high on the clam meter, usually one in every song live.

  • Will someone please give steve a tissue because he is SICK!!! AMAZING!!!

  • Sparse use of the bass drum is fucking unbelievable. You are a soulful prodigy. God damn your groove is fucking disgusting. Steve Jordan, I applaud you.

  • His face at 1:34 says it all...

  • Mmmm This is Nasty!

That backbeat is just slapping my face.

  • steve jordan is the shit. this woulda been a little cooler with a real bass, not that the synth isnt tight, but u think they would have used a bass player in a drumming dvd

  • @drewhrt2 youre right,or both instruments

  • Damn! I almost couldn't believe how tight n tasty that was. I'd sure like to find a drummer like that to play guitar with.

  • AWESOME! I'm a musician but not a drummer,i'm guessing that drummers have different styles too (excuse my ignorance guys!) but I can always tell steve when I hear him.And he's played on and produced half the records in my collection.

  • that's the tightest live keyboards I've ever heard

  • another funky cat is the dude on Scofield's Uberjam !! I hear some of Jordan in his playing (or just good funky stankness).

  • Adam Deitch is the drummer on Uberjam and yes, he is funky as hell too!

  • Steve is an amazing, amazing drummer. I love the way can take the most simple drumbeat and put so much groove and funk into it. Listen to the song " It Means A Lot" from Keith Richards " Talk is Cheap" CD....Plays a very simple beat throughout the song but WOW!! His sound and feel is just incredible!! That's what great drumming is all about for me!

  • @funkydrummer14

    Thanks for mentioning that recording!

  • @NatureLegalized

Oh yeah, that's a smokin track....Keith Richards sure put together a great band for his first solo debut....

  • wuauuuu!! super groove. genial!!!!

  • I'm not a drummer, I'm a guitarist. I know very little about drumming. But let me just say that Steve Jordan is one of my very favorite drummers. I think he plays with superior taste. He just seems to instinctively know what the best thing to play is. I love listening to him play drums.

  • Yeahh same for me! This guy is amazing and makes everyone too

  • Good Christ...I've been trollin' Jordan videos for about half an hour now. Seen this numerous times prior. I own the DVD and Jordan STILL kicks my ass! Hail STEVE!

  • same exact position, dude. wow, i love that guy.

  • vor neid erblassend...

  • Awesome jam, sick groove! Keep playing it over and over, fantastic. Does anyone know what guitar Danny Kortchmar uses?

  • @TimLorent

Looks like a Gibson ES-5 Switchmaster

  • Does anyone know what kind of Condenser microphones Steve is using here?

  • in my opinion, i truely think steve carries the groove. he is the king of groove.

  • As would all drummers... But no doubt Steve's 1 of world's best groovers. The other musicians played their roles of course, without them this song wouldn't sound no different to pots and pans for most people...

  • by carries "the groove" i mean steve possesses something not many other drummers have. i'm talking about the big picture of the significance of good drumming. steve defines it.

  • Yeah right, it's like he's really playing more for the song than himself, and blends himself in.

  • you can really see how much passion he has for the way a band meshes together.

  • @adrianwaj hai if only more drummers could learn that life lesson

  • @punkdude543 I agree my friend. It's that ability to get 'inside' the feel of a song. Difficult to learn, almost impossible to teach.

  • @punkdude543 well said.

  • can anyone recommend an album where this guy's drumming is really prominent other than the john mayer stuff?

  • "You and me baby, you and me!!" and into one of the baddest grooves ever...

  • "baddest"?

  • Groovy. Smooth. Chill. Consistent.

Steve Jordan is my kind of Drummer.

  • Guy on the keys looks like Q-Tip

  • OMG awesome!!

  • wtf...

that just blew my mind omg the groove, the feel

  • steve has so much feel to his playing

  • This is the sickest funk beat ever! You can talk about speed metal all you want, but this is the shit and it's freakin' hard to play with pocket and precision.

  • I got this DVD and it's immense, he goes behind the philosophy of the whole thing. Great musician and inspirational guy.

  • I've never heard a drummer drive a band so hard while sounding so relaxed. Steve Jordan is as good as it gets. Ever since I first heard the Blues Brothers recordings I've known Steve's unique talent. John Mayer is one wise cat to pick him up.

  • You got that all right man!

He's so simplistic, yet such a groove. I really dig him.

  • the man sounds like a drum machine until he spits out those killer fills......his timing is just unbelievable, no useless energy wasting chops here. pure groove, a real drummer

  • @Bosphorus92 He's like a drum machine in the sense that his groove is so solid and unwaivering, but he has a loose, liquid feel that no drum machine could come up with.

  • @Bosphorus92 I like both sides of it, drummers like Steve Jordan who can just groove and don't even need to anything else to amaze people, but also I love crazy gospel chops too, it just depends what the situation is I guess

  • damn what was fuckin smooooth!!!

  • in feeling it. got damn

  • Babay this funk should be put to JAIL !!

  • shit is layyyed back and solid! exactly what i like to hear/feel. im not a fan of all that in front of the beat stuff.

  • haha the thing is....steve is pushing the beat real hard

  • not at all my man. the guitar is pushing way more than he is. thats why it works so well

  • lol dude, I play guitar. but this is def drum driven.

  • steve jordan's playing = more solid than a rock.

  • "Badass" does not even begin to cover it.

  • :11 Steve Urkel :O

  • dang, that little fill at :45 was tight

  • That my Drum Teacher.

"And He don't even Know It.!"

  • very well said ma brotha.

  • very excellent that drummer !

  • Great to hear a drummer groove for a change - very nice!

  • can anyone say eargasm?

  • feel like bustin loose i feel like bustin loose

  • Great great groove!!! This is what leads drummers to the right place.

  • It sure is (In reference to the location of the groove)

  • this just has to be the fattest motherfucking groove on the planet . . . listen to how the bass intertwines . . . ah yh!

    a

  • Yeah!

  • You and me baby, you and me !!! :-)

I just LOVE this video, yeah !!!

  • this is not his yamaha signature snare drum . does anybody know what he's crackin' on ?? does anybody own a jordan sig.?? i wasthinking of picking one up ,although i also loved his brady snare . thanks.

  • know what your saying man - me2. Would like to se James Brown do some moves while jordan is drumming

  • hit hats are so LARGE!

  • they're 17" inch

    quite large, lol

  • hes actually used 2 18" constantinople crashes for sometracks

  • Wow?! No kidding? I guess when it comes to grooving, the larger the hi-hats the better? Thats it i'm getting 2 28" wuhans for my next hi-hats.

  • Try 15's !! They will give a new feeling , its so cool.

  • I concur. Big hi hats are great for getting laying down big fat grooves. Check out my videos of Steve Jordan and other drum covers with 16" Paiste Hi Hats.

  • Great playing man , keep up the good work. I envy you because , apparently , you can play at home. Keep practicing !!

  • Thanks, that room is in fact my dorm. Despite what I anticipated, nobody minds.

  • Wow , this is a one in the million chance , to be able to play in your dorm. I guess its some kind of music establishment , like a music college ?

  • That snare drum sound is by far the best snare sound i've ever heard.

  • That's really how I like to hear the drums. Great groove, great sound. Does anyone knows what snaredrum he's playing?

  • I have a cassette tape of Steve Khan's "Blades" which has Steve Jordan on drums. I've been wearing that tape down for over 16 years and can't find it on cd anywhere.

  • I'm not familiar with "Blades", but I have Casa Loco and Eyewitness, and I love Steve Jordan's playing on both of those albums.

  • I think "Blades" may be out of print. I only have a cassette tape of it which I've had since 1987 and at some point it's going to wear out.

The drumming on "Blades" is sick. At some points it's reminiscent of Stewart Copeland's playing on Synchronicity 1.

  • Jordan has the best "pocket" of all time. He may not be the fastest or most technical, but that funk doesn't wash off. My God I wish I could lay down a groove like he does.

  • Well said.

  • spot on

  • yumm thats a juicy groove.
