I love this song ! It hits you in the gut and pushes you right along right to the end ... well, at least right to the weird interlude anyway. Boo-Yaa Boo-Yaa
That Ian really puts a lot of energy in his music ... just cannot stand his stage personna, always putting the rest of the band down, and behind him.
What a feast for the senses, if your'e into drums. Clive Bunker, Mitch Mitchell, and Keith Moon at the same show! I think Clive is the best of them all.
I used to get first row balcony at the fillmore east when tull played just so i could lean over the railing and watch Clive Bunker play . He was so frekin great . Really inspired my drumming back then . He was one of the best rock drummers of all time !.
I recall the first time I saw him solo at the Fillmore. Dharma. He was so fast and his timing was as good as any drummer, and better than most! His double set was as big as Baker's and just as impressive. And he used ALL of it!
The Fillmore was the best! Saw Tull there several times along with many of the stellar groups including Hendrix! Won't be another place like it! What a time that was!!!
Wow, mike brings back great memories . I just about lived there in my youth Was there every weekend .And snuck into almost every show . Intill Bill Graham hired the hells angels as security .Then it became alot harder .But the carnarsie boys still crashed those doors open at least twice a night. HA,HA.
I have listened to Tull for years and I still cannot understand how they went from great performances like this and albums like Stand Up, to their later crap they started putting out in the 80's.
To Bluesoulpaul, if you are still around--I am almost positive this is IOW '70, as I was there and fortunate enough to be up front for Tull. I distinctly remember the way he put out the cigarette right after the drum solo. I was very stoned at the time and remember it well. Also the bathrobe he is wearing is the same. I know John Evans was with them 6 months later at CW Post College in Long Island. They went to the same diner we did after the show. Anyway IOW was absolutely incredible.
this is the first time ive heard this song and i find the vocals work fair well. have you thought maybe youre use to listening to it without the lyrics
Yeah, almost the same for me. I've heard this before, but I first heard the Living in the past live version with vocals, so when i heard the studio version, it sounded strange without them....
I often see very few similarities between the vocal version and the original instrumental, so I just view them as 2 completely different songs.
And if I had to compare them (which I shouldn't really, given how different they are), I'd say I much preferred this version: it's more striking and powerful musically, and the lyrics, while nonsensical, are very well sung.
Isn't it embarassing when you get things confused and post the wrong info? I was wrong, this is IOW 1970, I confused it with another JT gig in Leicester 1969, but, hey, I was not necessaraly in a legal state of mind during most of the festival! still need the other tracks though.
I have been attempting to compile videos of the gigs I personally attended during my misspent youth as possible and was particularly pleased to get this, but I am sure this was not the Isle of Wight 1970. John Evans had not yet joined the band , JT were a keyboard-free 4 piece and Mr Bunker was not wearing a white floppy hat.
Anyone know of a vid of the actual IOW Dhama?
I also need With You There To Help Me,To Cry You A Song and Boureeto complete the setlist for the gig.
clive is a beast, and unapprieciated man. just like mitch. i've heard 3 diff versions of this song, i think this ones the best but i cant find the album anywhere.
so the organ is on one side of the stage and the piano on the opposite side? did John Evan make a mad dash thru the band to switch between one and the other?
Errr, I';m a tad confused as to what you;re talking about here. John Evan plays the entire song on the only keyboard which is on Ian's right. He just goes for a little walkabout at 2:50; he ends in the same place
