Smart keys have very bad reputation for jamming up, alot of calls i go to one thing i noticed is that every customer that had a jammed kwikset was not using a originally cut key, it was a copy, so i believe using copys that are a lil bit off can cause those wierd pins inside to jump a notch cuasing failure.... fuck you kwikset set and your damn smart keys yea you make us more money but god damn its a bitch to bypass in freezing weather i rather pick it and leave 5 min or less
Can these locks prevent entry from a foot knocking the door out of the jam? Answer: NO!
Not everything needs to be high tech. I drive a Prius and enjoy the convenience of the smart key. Toyota spend years perfecting its technology. Until they get these things right why be a test dummy?
Actually, it does. I have strengthened plate with 3 inch hardened screws fastened to the stud. You would have to be strong enough to rip 4 3 inch screws out of a 2x4. Good luck with that before a leg is broken.
You drive a Prius? Did you know that if the entire lifecycle of the vehicle is taken into consideration (construction, driving, eventual dismantling) that the Range Rover Discovery causes less environmental damage?
@Intrepidman OK so you think your safe? Don't take my word for it, ask your local law enforcement officer how quick they can get through your door, with the information you have given us. No regular door is safe if they want to get in. PERIOD!
As far as that Range Rover of yours goes, it's a gas guzzler. I wouldn't own one, it breaks down often and parts are expensive. BTW I'm a chemical engineer, worked for oil companies for over 40 yrs. so I know how vehicles operate. Keep your fancy lock!
Yeah, they can get through my door if they want to. They had better hope that I am not home. First they will wake my very noisy dogs, then they will be greeted by the homeowner who has more than harsh language to deal with 2 legged varmints.
Oh, I don't have a Range Rover. I have a Suburban. 170K miles and reliable as a hammer. Just had it smogged, and it barely pollutes at all.
I am a locksmith in Ontario, double sided locks on exit doors are a violation of fire code here, and in most states where building and fire or life safety codes are regulated by persons with greater than a grade 4 education. The real issue is that home owners are expected to be aware of this when purchasing from retailers and places like Lowes and Home Depot just do not employ anyone who knows or cares enough to advise consumers. Both Medeco and Mul-T-Lock have "Captive" deadbolts Check it out!
Yeah, I figured that if we needed to get out that could be a problem, so we keep a key in the inside lock at all times, which defeats the original purpose.
@Intrepidman The idea with the Captive deadbolt from Medeco and Mul-T-Lock is that while you are home the lock operates like a single sided deadbolt. The inside thumb turn is locked in place and can't be removed. When you leave you can use your key to release the Thumb turn ( which is actually a key with a knob attached to it) and the lock now operates with a key both sides. The problem with your lock is that to remain "safe" you leave a key in it that could be removed by anyone.
@Intrepidman - The Smart Key was the WORST thing they evey did! Nice concept... but DAMN! Schalge now has a smiliar set-up and it works on the same principal. You are better off with the Schlage like you have and calling a Locksmith if you need the keys changed... You may pay more... but you'd never have an issue
You shouldnt have a double sided lock on any of your exterior doors anyways. Forget about this particular defect. What would have happend if again you needed to exit your house right away and you couldnt find your key.
We have a large window in our front door, so my wife wanted a double lock. We keep a key in the inside lock for emergency exits. Kind of defeats the purpose, but it keeps the wife happy.

This same exact thing happened to the Kwikset Smart Key Deadbolt on the house of my friend's gf's house and because of the lock mechanisms construction,It coudn't be picked,so it had to be drilled.
I'm a working Locksmith and have serviced many of these locks since they came out. I try to only install them if the customer buys their own lock, since I suspected from the beginning that they might lose their combination, due to their design, and the customer would be locked out. Normally we don't have any problems with them. You may have simply got a defective cylinder.

KwikShit is the Lock Industry Standard term for these crap locks. Go with Schlage or Arrow... never an issue!

@dabbs327,
Funny enough, I replace the Kwikset with a Schlage. No issues at all.

@dabbs327,
Yeah, give me a normal lock. Or, if I need 100s of people in and out of my house when I am not there, get one of those that have a keypad.
