Just found a family ancestor who emmigrated to USA from England in 1880. Her husband was listed on the US 1880 census (Jermyn Boro, Lackawanna, Pen.) as being a coal miner although he was home with a cold the day the census was taken!! Nice to be able to imagine where and how he would have worked. He and his wife ended up living in Cuba city, Fulton, Illinois although he was still listed as a coal miner. Thank s Christian
i worked in the UMWA at monterey coal company in illinois... i noticed the guy talking.. theres a light pointed in his face... thats a good rule workin underground anywhere.. keep your light out of ppls face while talking....
@superemposed It depends on where your at and what your mining for. i work in a coal mine in johnstown Pennsylvania. we have a good bit of mines around here. lots of jobs needed because many abandoned mines are now reopening.
@deroo552 jeez, i wish i lived in the USA pennsylvania, i always wanted a career in Coal mining but this Goverment made sure that they would all close never to re open.
@superemposed No you don't. I mean, having a mining job is cool and all, but expect nothing else. PA has mines and trains, which are both becoming useless.
the coal region is awesome. I ride dirt bike on the old waste piles at trevoton pa. I also do do alot of trail riding you'll see some old torn down building, old rail cars, old quarrys holes that are filled with water, a few old mineshafts and vent shafts that aren't sealed off. Went down the one mine shaft and you can either go left or right at the bottom. We didn't have a bright enough flashlight for that though. Its awesome seeing all the old history up there .
being a south texas guy, I went to pennsylvania and took this tour and it was awesome! A little scary being underground that long...miners were crazy to do this job!! I highly recommend it.
I've always wanted to go on one of these mine tours. This video was really informative. I will have to make a point to go on one of the mine tours soon.
i remember i went here in like 5thgrade for a field trip. ive wanted to go back again but i never get the chance. my great grandfather worked in there. you can see another entance in nayaug park in scranton but its closed.
great job you guys i use to work in that mine i started in that mine when it opened and left when it colsed. then they made a park out of it. the pic of the miner who is on the tipple looks just like him. his name was billy pasco. he worked in the tipple. he has passed away.thanke fellows coal miner mike verdetto

Also if you make it to western PA come check out Seldom Seen Mine. We will show you how soft coal is mined.
