Su-27 MTOW 30t. MiG29 20t. F/A-18 25t, and F-16 17t. I think speed stability is a more critical factor in the ease of formating. Engines accleration rate could also be a factor. Size is not an absolute factor. I thought the Angels formate fairly close as well.
The distance between the Bleu Angels formation when they flew in the Netherlands was at some points in their display about 30 centimeter... I say, that's as close as you want to get. Just try that with a car when speeding 150kph :)

As for Russia, every serious candidate with potential to beat Putin is trown in prison, like Kasparov for example. If you would arrest a hate preaching clown like Wilders from parlemet you would get a revolt. Freedom is: freedom of speech and a free chosen government.
In Russia opposing candidates don't even need to be thrown into prison, because they're little known to people or compromised by mass media. As long as mass media belongs to government and olligarhs, there will be no democracy in Russia. By the way, Kasparov was not thrown into prison, but just detained for few days.
Look at this video of 9 (nine!) Sukhoi and MiG planes in formation - just type "MAKS 2005 Strizhi - The Swifts" in the YouTube search form. Russian knights in Sukhois and Swifts (or Strizhi) in MiGs...
Thunderbirds and Blue angels are not even close to Russian knights and Swifts (Striži) because Sukhois are much, much bigger planes than F16's and F18's, thus much harder to fly them in close proximities with other such planes of 30 tons each! It is much easier to fly light and small F16's...

Both! They appear quite similar to untrained eye, but still recognisable! :) MiG-29 is the smaller plane. Wing shapes are also a bit different.
