This is disgusting. I actually live in Mcgregor which is a suburb in the far west side of Canberra and this farm is literally 2 minutes from my house. You can actually see the sheds from my front door. Sometimes i lay awake at night thinking about the cruel practices that are happening to hens near my house. Sometimes on a windy day you can smell it. It's fucking disgusting and the ACT government should be ashamed of itself.
I loathe the RSPCA, they are not what people really think. They are nothing more than a publicity seeking, good for nothing enterprise. I have rung them before about dogs in difficult situations and they DID NOTHING. They always claim that they can't get involved. What is the point of them then?
I can't and won't watch the whole of this video, Because I personally will not buy eggs or egg products .. My lovley little pet chickens do that job for me...... I own rescued battery hens ....
I watched part of this video months ago i got so far and them visions won't leave my mind!.....
All I can say is if you taste an egg from a much loved spoilt rotten hen.. then taste one of them eggs.. it will prove tasteless eggs have no nutriton compared to a proper egg.. so buy unhappy hen eggs.????
It doesn't surprise me the RSPCA thinks the evidence is insufficient as they don't generally do much to address cruelty with farm animals - shame on you.
Shutting down Parkwood and banning battery cages in Canberra would send a message to the rest of the country and could be the catalyst for real change!! ACT Government has the opportunity to make a significant statement that an Australian Government is willing to act in a situation where blatant cruelty to animals occurs every day.
This is what the egg industry spokesman James Kellaway describes as '5 star accommodation' for chickens. What a sick joke, Kellaway! I'd love to see you in this accommodation for 15 months. You'd be begging for them to send you off to slaughter.
Absolutely disgraceful. ACT Labor proudly claims that it has "Shown leadership on animal welfare". Until this hideous violence is brought to an end and this place is shut down, this claim will remain hollow, empty and ultimately deceitful.
Ok now the ACT labour government are saying there is no point banning battery cages in the ACT because Pace will simply set up over the border in NSW. Yeah, they probably will but that's not the point! If the ACT is the first state in Australia to ban battery cages the other states will follow suit eventually. We need to show the other states this CAN be done! By not banning battery cages the ACT gov are saying it's ok to keep hens like this. Pass the bill to ban cages and shut Parkwood down!
Everytime I see footage like this my heart gets broken a little more. I sometimes forget just how cruel we humans can be, but it's good for me to have these reminders so that I can help do something about it.
This is disgusting and inhumane and needs to be stopped. Knowledge is power and we all need to us our power to put an end to battery hen farming in Australia (and worldwide). Please EVERYONE stop buying cage eggs - it's the best way to make a difference. Demand cruelty free eggs and animal products! Do it now!
This is horrible. I have had pet chooks - they have such wonderful personalities. But to see so many treated so badly makes me furious. Why is this farm still operational? No job is worth that kind of suffering.
Just breaks my heart. I am ashamed of being human, ashamed of my country and ashamed of this world. I cannot bear the thought of this happening. Just cannot BEAR it. I hope against hope that there is such a thing as karma and that everyone responsible , everyone who profits and everyone who eats cage eggs pays dearly for their total lack of compassion. This is just so very very wrong.
absolutely disgusting and tolerable. We must act now to stop this cruelty. All living creatures have a right to live without pain and suffering. I am ashamed of being a person whilst we treat living things like this. How can it be stopped. Please everyone, do whatever you can to alleviate this cruel practice.
I am intolerant to animal cruelty, and I refuse to eat eggs or from any living creature. The egg industry is unsustainable. There should be no hens in cages. The industry makes its own laws, for their own convenience. NO to cage eggs always!
How can this be allowed to go on in the 21st century? If we want to consider ourselves as living in a civilised society this horror must be stopped. Please, please someone do something!
this is revolting. completely and utterly wrong but let's put it into perspective. many human beings are treated worse than this but it doesnt seem to raise the same kind of outrage ...
It's funny how Australian people can get really uppity about, for example, Japanese whaling. Maybe we should take a look at how animals are treated in this country instead of being hypocritical jerks. This is shameful.
rebekaharmstrong1 - yes. all australians are responsible for the actions of one chicken farm. you dumb cunt. since we're all such hypocritical jerks why dont you fuck off out of the country?
this expose will cause an outrage in aust society.
I just can't believe one of the reasons Stanhope (the ACT Chief Minister) continuously refuses to shut this place down is because he wants to save local jobs! Just have a look at the jobs he's trying to save!!!!! These chickens have their legs broken and then endure nearly 24hrs squashed in crates on a truck, or drown in rank manure, after spending their entire lives trapped in a cage. Stanhope these people should not have their jobs saved, they should be going to GAOL for mass animal cruelty!!!
How can this cruelty be legal - there is no moral reason for this barbaric treatment of innocent animals to continue. This cruelty is happening in our nations capiatl.I sope the people that work there suffer a similar cruel fate.Australia is a country with animal welfare laws -how can the rspca not prosecute?? I beleive the next step would be to contact the rspca .
Think about this every time you buy a caged egg. How can people actually work there? How do they sleep at night? Hens are beautiful animals. Why not get a few in your backyard. They are very entertaining.
Free range is just as cruel... what do you think happens to the hens that can no longer lay? Boycotting the entire egg industry is the only humane response to end this cruelty. I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for the RSPCA to do anything here... they get nice payouts from egg companies... the more ppl that stop eating eggs - the greater the message.
This video made me cry, not only as a Vegan, but as a human being... even people who partake in the exploitation of animals for their own personal use simply can not justify this kind horrific treatment. But this is exactly what you get every time you purchase battery eggs. Many people think purchasing free range is simply enough, but completely disregard products that use cage eggs... More needs to be done. Stricter regulations must be enforced now!
As I watch this clip, I have a goose, 4 ducks and several wild birds outside my door, each with a name. They are my friends and I see them as wonderfully interesting creatures. I cannot imagine any of them without their freedom to run into the water, or play in the dirt... Eggs are a great source of human nutrition, but THIS DOES NOT GIVE REASON, for any animal to be treated so badly. Ignorance is bliss, but not when it is killing something else.
This is such a sad and shameful reflection of humanity. It appalls me that we would let these animals suffer in such poor and unethical conditions. I truly hope that a change is made.
Well, I only eat Manning Valley eggs because I KNOW what I'm getting. I think that Australia is very slack in regulating animal protection laws in many aspects including battery hens, and circus'. THIS NEEDS TO BE STOPPED!!!
This is awful and extrememely upsetting. How is this OK? Cruelty to animals is simply unacceptable and unnecessary. It's evil and disgusting and it makes me ashamed of fellow humans.
The fact that animals are allowed to be kept in battery cages and treated like this, in my country, makes me so so so ashamed. These animals have become yet another tool in our industrialisation. Why aren't they treated with care and dignity? They are living and conscious!
And aside from the animal welfare, how can anyone want to eat eggs coming out of this kind of facility?! When the hens look like they do, one must question the nutritional quality of the eggs.
I wish I was face to face with those evil scumbags... I would collect piles of chicken poo then I would drown them in it!!! ..... I would poke their eyes out with egg shells too!
Having any animals in cages is cruel and unnecessary. A vegan diet, not using any products derived from animals, is the ideal healthy diet for humans, and no animal needs to suffer.
"Cage free" is just a slightly different kind of hell, just less wire, but the same horror. Since RSPCA had or currently still has investment in Pace, it's not surprising they don't do much to address it. But the RSPCA do little to address any issues "farm" animal issues and tends to only address cat dog and some individual instances of abuse.
why are so many people so SLOW to catch on.... to make the connection... this violence MUST END. wether it is violence to a human or and animal, there is no difference. it IS violence, and that is that. I just hope more people prove to be intelligent enough to put an end to this, one of the many many ways we keep violence alive through harming each others and other living creatures on this earth.
How can this go on? These living creatures live in hell and then die in the most appalling way. I can't stand it. How do the people that run places like this lie in bed at night. They should all be put through what these poor hens endure.
This is utterly utterly disgraceful!!!! In a country that prides itself on its vast green lands and blue sky, animals are made to live & die in such horrific conditions. How different are we to the rest of the world? For a race that thinks it superior to others, we know what we are doing causes pain and suffering, yet we continue to do so. We have simply brought cave-man behaviour into the industrial age, even though animals haven't been needed to feed & keep us warm (fur) for a long long time!
And here we are critising other countries for conditions more humane than this. This is not somewhere in Australia, this is in our own god damn backyard! We are the national capital, the nations capital accepting these appaling conditions! What message are we sending to the rest of the country? Ohhhh, wait, no, lets impliment a system where the company can impliment a HUMANE process SLOWLY so they don't lose $. If Rudd does nothing about this, shame on you Mr RUDD, shame on YOU! No votes here.
Free range is no better. The male chicks are murder, and the hens are murdered once they stop producing eggs at a profitable rate. They usually still debeak the hens, too. And there is still cannibalism, etc. Not to mention the layers come from hens that have been raped every day of its life until it is murdered.
There might be a slight difference between caged and free range, but seriously, they still both involve murder and suffering.
This is an obvious WRONG that can be made RIGHT. We are the Nations Capital and we need to set an example for the rest of our fine nation. Make a stand ACT. DEMAND best quality practices. DEMAND that not another single hen is left to die and rott in a pit of manure. Demand that the eggs on your breakfast plate are from HAPPY, HEALTHY hens and DEMAND that the ACT Government are a cruelty free Government who ARE interested in replacing BAD practise with GOOD practice.
Which is why small steps will get you closer to a cruelty free and hen friendly world :) So I challenge the Government to ask themselves, Is this right? Is this Ok? There are proven and well developed alternatives to battery farming and there is NO reason the chickens ill-fated enough to pass through PACE in Canberra should suffer to the extent that they do. This Business is operating a cruel, inhumane operation and does not DESERVE the support or PROTECTION of our Government.
I appreciate the views of vegans and meat eaters alike and realize that they may differ greatly on the issue of battery cages and of how an egg should/and does end up on your breakfast plate. I appreciate that we can not snap our fingers and hope that over night, our world will be cruelty free and I understand that the decision to shut down pace farms will be a political decision made with political priorities in mind. This is simply the way the world works.
Stay on track Pincus666 - were not talking about the 'Egg Industry' as a whole, right now were talking about 1 battery farm in the little old city of Canberra which the Government have the RESPONSIBILITY as well as the OPPORTUNITY to CLOSE DOWN.
Fair enough. But all commercial egg operations involve the systematic mutilation, exploitation, and murder of sentient animals. I'm just putting that out there :)
Anything short of veganism is morally reprehensible.
There is no difference between free range systems and factory farms. The animals are still typically subject to painful mutilations without anaesthetic, and are killed prematurely.
It is silly to assert that battery cages = bad and cage-free = good. They're all horrible!
This is a fucking disgrace!! I am appauled at the RSPCA!! Seriously they need some rethinking on who makes decisions over there!! Is it all about the mighty dollar?? Yes, I know it is!
Disgusting. This goes to show why Australia needs to follow Europe and California in banning battery cages. Woolworths and McDonalds have both recently announced their readiness to phase out battery eggs, now all it needs is political leadership.
@nuggetwetyou The RSPCA is in a commercial agreement with Pace Farm eggs where they get over $30,000 a year profit from their endorsement of Barn Laid products. How could the RSPCA investigate a company that is paying them thousands?
The two things that you can do are donate to Animal Liberation NSW and put up posters everywhere you can telling of the awful conditions in Cage Egg farms.
I am in shock. Those poor chickens should not have to suffer like that. They are helpless and don't need to suffer because people don't care. Who is going to help them if someone does not step in. They are living, breathing creatures. If they were dogs then maybe something would have been done sooner. Is that fair? I don't think so.
It is an absolute disgrace that this kind of practice is allowed to continue anywhere, let alone in Australia. Battery cages need to be banned, not 'phased out'!
The RSPCA have proven themselves again as being a worthless organization for animals. This is absolutely disgusting, but what do you expect from a "welfare" group who receive money from the sale of Pace farm barn eggs (intensive factory farm). i hoped that the RSPCA would do something about this, but they have let the animals down for years. i am going to terminate my membership with them immediately. Thank you for this video.
This place is disgusting!!! I am so ashamed that the ACT government has not shut this place down and that the RSPCA turns a blind eye to the horrific mistreatment of thousands and thousands chickens. Shame on the RSPCA and shame on the ACT Government for pushing the issue of banning battery cages aside year after year.

Disgusting. This goes to show why Australia needs to follow Europe and California in banning battery cages. Woolworths and McDonalds have both recently announced their readiness to phase out battery eggs, now all it needs is political leadership.

im only 16, but how can we help?
should there be more complaints to the rspca?

Ban all animal agriculture. Cage/barn/free range - the difference is negligible.

Is this not evidence enough???
