What this is this is how you go about each day with your two feet on the ground trying the best you can learning from all shit you go though and being and honest man in a terrible sinful world reach for the sky but beware of sharks in the water
You want to know how to write lyrics. Study Aesop Rock. Future generations will look upon this album as a brilliant description of early 21st century psyches.
Much respect to AOTP!! If you like what they put down, you may dig my shit - take two seconds to swing by my channel and find out for yourself. Help emerging music break through! RESPECT!!
@CobraCommander51 There's a lot of other good stuff out there that's just like this, you just gotta dig around. I was the same way about 4 years ago, I hated hip-hop, then I started discovering shit like this. Btw, Aesop Rock is one dude.
sometimes i think he just puts random words together and makes it sound intelligente. EXAMPLE: traped space monkeys with rockerfeller and ford, well it appears the perception didnt bypass the protons of the classical vinyls...etc.
@MozGunz the dystopia within the caged aligator which seemed, teemed with life gives no shelter to the leaves of forribidn fruit. yo i hugged eve with a lock and chain hoping that one day that the star ringed.....
@grand5651 That sounds like this is the only song of his you've heard. If that's the case, you should do urself a favor and listen to the rest. Just be prepared to have your mind BLOWN!
I like him. He isnt like idiots (eminem) who prattle on about not being fake/about his "STRUGGLE". He's one of the most popular rappers ever, he isn't struggling. This guy is creative and he puts his time and money into making art like this.
@kannabiz420 Before Cage turned emo he was one of the rawest, illest fools to ever pick up a mic. Now I can't say that Em bit his style, but you can't say that Cage sucks. Do your homework.
@kannabiz420 Never said he's rapping about Cage's life. It's more that he bit his image than his style. He raps like he's crazy n uses all these drugs, then in "I'm Shady" he says "Well, I do take pills, don't do speed, Don't do crack don't do coke, I do smoke weed, Don't do smack, I do do shrooms, do drink beer, I just wanna make a few things clear"
Then in the video for Real Slim Shady he's in a mental home, Cage was in real life. Not a delusion. Like Reachwun said, do ur homework
he sits upon a crate, he makes a rusty trumpet sound like the music that angels make
now if you ever come visit me I suggest you watch the show
tell em aesop rock sent you just to hear his horn blow like this
If your from NYC you know exactly what hes talking about. Aesop is so brilliant, Figured I would fill that in cause something just made me listen to aesop a few minutes ago. Reading and Listening to Appleseed. So many quoteables with Aesop.
That line is just everything I want to hear, it's like it's letting me know that this song is going to be interesting and important and not just some generic same old boring song
The line "My name stands for my being and my being stands for the woman who stood and braved the storm to raise the seedling" might be my favorite single sentence on any rap album.
Passing the time with serial coloring book and marbles, dont tell me you at the droid that held the charcoals, dont tell me Lucifer God dond car pool., this is our schoool!
@jwilliams1er "Passing the time with serial killer coloring books and bags o' marbles/ don't tell me you ain't the droid that held the match to the charcoals". His lyrics are hard to get at sometimes but always rewarding to pin down. This song is for sure one his best, and I'm tempted to say Labors Days is his best albums. The beats are so lush and have so much depth.
Battery stretches the limits of hip-hop pastoralism with a bass-and-cello figure and more of those fluttering coos with Aesop intoning, "Brother sun, sister moon, mother beautiful," and, "I painted a sunny day on the insides of my eyelids."
The sample is Prelude in C# Minor by Herbie Hancock. Can't post links for some reason, but try a search on Amazon MP3 for it. The album is "Gershwin's World" and you should be able to recognize the sample from the preview on the site immediately.
around 1:55 the warm sound is some kind of a flute, an oboe is possible too, at this qualaty it is hard to distinguish.
around 2:05 the sound that kicks in after the "like this" is a sax, The mechanic to create a sound(using a wet wooden plate) is used in some orental instruments too.
@strouze it kinda sounds like a punji or bin (the snake charmer instrument) or an obo or clarinet, cant really totally sure but its not a sax or trumpet for sure
@NimhGC It is a sax. The trumpet sound was programmed into it during post-production. A friend of mine met Aesop after one of his shows and told him himself
Amazing how well this album has stood the test of time. The definitive underground hip-hop album of the 00s (even better than The Cold Vein), and one of my fave hip-hop albums period. I do get tired, however, of every underground rap song having comments under it about how Lil' Wayne sucks - we get it already, you're alternative and real, whatever. And just FYI, Lil Wayne is a really good rapper, that is just a fact.
i hate how everyone thinks lil wayne is so good i mean listen to them does lil wayne have anything better i wish everyone knew what what the genre rap really sounds like aesop rock definitely sound like rap
i dont think hip hop is dying yet but it will be soon, its kind of peaking right now, and like hair metal in the 80's it has become mostly recycled pieces of crap that only talks about girls and money, ELECTRONIC MUSIC WILL TAKE OVER!!!

@internetkiddie "WHAT IS HE TALKIN ABOUT???"
he's talking about the failure of the american dream, and how the american society has been tainted.
also, the homeless man as repeatedly mentioned throughout the song, may be a metaphor for aes' own artistic tribulations.
like the homeless man, aes is barely scratching out a living despite the fact he's created such beautiful masterpieces.
