This was one of Vera Lynn's most under-rated songs. Brings back many memories for the couples from the war years and even later. Her voice was just inspiring for all who listened to her. A German war vet once told me, that even though they weren't supposed to listen to the BBC during the war, many of the German soldiers loved her singing too.Just one of the greatest singers of all time...Thanks for posting.
My dad used to be sweet on you during the war (and you on him, is the story?). He is dying and wants your music played at his funeral. He thinks of you with warm memories, this old Dutch sailor (Trade marine).
Imagine a 19 year old boy miles and miles away from home, in the rain and the mud, smoking a cigarette because he's not able to sleep from fear to get killed by enemy fire. His head shrouded in blue smoke - the only companion on the front, his mind in the flowerfields behind his house at home, thinking of his mother's applepie, his eyes filling with tears as he hears this song on the background from his officer's cabin. That, too, was WWII and this feeling is perfectly captured by Vera Lynn.
Because I was an early baby-boomer (I guess), it seems that I have always known the songs of Vera Lynn. A half-century (+) later I love them still.
I do not understand the music of today, of the last 30 years..There seems to be no melody, no beauty of words or feeling... Can someone who knows more enlighten me? But many thanks for this one...
@seratonea I agree and I am in my 20's. Songs like this have meaning and are filled with feeling. Music today is just trash and that is where it should be.
i am a belgian fireman.Everytime a collegue fireman retires,we play this song, accompagning full dressed firefighters a stage. On stage ,there is also a blackligt, reflecting on our fluo-helmets.I can tell you,....it gives you shivers, seeing the collegue criing like a child......
I'll be listening to this at My Grandad's funeral tomorrow. "We'll Meet Again" on entrance, and the above song as we leave :(
Fred "Curly" Curtis, 25 March 2010, age 86.
He fought on Sword Beach during the D-Day landings and came out unscathed, but passed away peacefully at home in his sleep after a 6 year battle with Parkinson's Disease.
ranks nowadays music and minds to the trash bin. Sticks also to a period with higher moral values....a heritage lost so let's enjoy the souvenir of the difference

We played this song on my Grandmother's funeral. I still remember it...
We walked in the room, and this song was played. I didnt even see the coffin and I started crying.

She was just so great, best woman ever lived.
