  • Just read Killing the Badger and the behind the scenes discussion was incredible.

The video only scratches the surface.

  • Thats the way u do it make people think you working for Lemond then take the win for yourself

  • Anyone who can't understand why Hinualt attacked on this stage and still maintains that he did everything in his power to win the Tour himself and betray Lemond doesnt understand cycling. As he said in Cyclesport in 1993 'if i wanted to be nasty i could easily have said 'i have a 5 minute lead on GC,ok Greg Lemond, you are working for me now'. His attacking in the Alps destroyed Zimmerman and gifted Lemond a huge GC lead. As for Grewal, Hinault probably thought little of the comments, if at all

  • I don't understand why Hinault attacked in yellow jersey on peyresourde with more of 5 minutes on Lemond............why ???

    however, thank's to socalrider ^___^

  • That was an epic stage. Hinault was an arrogant fool for attacking the way he did. What a numbnut.

  • Funny Story is that after Hinault was passed by Lemond's group and was fading back through the field.. He came back to Alexi Grewal and in fine Alexi fashion says to Hinault " You F*cked up Bernie"

  • I wonder if Hinault said anything back when he caught and passed Grewal in the final km!

  • @socalrider909 Yep. Just read that in a recent book. Just imagine Bernie's face!!!!

  • Weird seeing the riders without helmets

  • The colombians are great climbers

  • does anyone know what are the 3 songs that plays in this video ?

i am sure is john tesh , but i dont know the name .

  • "The cars behind indicate the approach of the Badger" -- I love this sport.

  • When I was a kid I used to get so psyched up to all socalrider's vids. I'm 32 now and I'm bookmarking/saving them all like crazy. I gotta train harder; cycling really is nobility without the cash.

    Cheers mate.

  • socalrider...right you are! Amazing how their voices sound similar now that I listen again. That's Tesh'ie for sure. I stand corrected.

  • That was Al Trautwad at the beginning. 21 years later and he still knows squat about cycling it seems

  • Wrong, John Tesh had commenting duties in 1986..

  • great Video, Thanks!

  • Was Phil Liggett not commentating by this time. This commentator sounds terrible!

  • It is John Tesh and Phil Liggett..

  • I like the commentating.

  • Is this a real song??? I need this. I need to ride with this music.

  • cycling always sounds better with '80s music.

  • It's John Tesh

  • amazing that this was the only coverage available to me as a kid. such an oversimplification of the tactics, as if Hinault, Hampsten, and Lemond were all attacking each other. Now, it is true that the Badger was probably not completely on board with helping Lemond as he had promised, but this day was a well-documented team tactic meant to string out the peloton and launch Lemond. and it worked.

  • You're right; although I think that at times Hinault wasn't sure whether he was actually helping Lemond (as he said) or helping himself. In the end, whatever his intention, he was able to have his cake and eat it too -- he wore out the competition so that Lemond could lay down the final blow; he made Lemond prove that he really was the best that year; and he allowed himself to bow out like the tenacious champion he was. I wish we had more riders like him these days.

  • Also, when "Herrera falters," it is actually a flat tire that forced him to be dropped.

  • It was well documented after this stage (and later confirmed by Hinault) that a pair of TV helicopters were positioned to use their updraft to sweep him up the slope.

You can even see all the papers flying around. Only a Frenchman could engineer such a feat.

  • Hinault can certainly tell a joke

  • Actually, the Italians allegedly engineered just such a feat in the 1984 Giro, getting a TV helicopter to hover behind Francesco Moser in the final time trial so that he would make up time on (and win the race from) Laurent Fignon. No country has a monopoly on shennanigans.

  • Hinault was nuts -- attacking halfway through a mountain stage, even though he had nothing to gain and everything to lose. That's not how they race any more, which I sort of regret.
