@Trund27 Well, I got the role of Scanlon for this. As a girl, it was a bit challenging (especially when I had to tape down my tits and wear boxers on stage,) but it was my most rewarding role. I couldn't have asked for a better part. This was the best play I've ever been in. The first 10 min. on youtube. Just look up One Flew BAVPA. I'm the chick with the box and no lines :P
the saddest thing is up until she mentions his mother, he is talking normally with little to no delay, unlike the rest of the movie.. then it all goes downhill.. fucking nurse
@Freethinker12341 because when he said he like Candy (the girl) Mac ask's if he wants to have sex with her? First he doesn't want to but then Mac tells the other guys to take him to her so basically it's Mac's fault.
My friend and I were just talking about this scene. It's so powerful. Nurse Ratched represents the immasculating mother-guilt that lowers our self-confidence and can be so hard to overcome for some people.
@naesreora They had the oscars since the late 1920s. This film got best picture, best director and best screenplay, with Jack Nicholson winning best actor, and Louise Fletcher winning best actress, making it only the second film ever to win all five major awards, after "It Happened One Night" in the early 30s. Brad Dourif was nominated for best supporting actor, but lost to George Burns in "The Sunshine Boys".
This is Brad Dourif's first movie ever (not counting his uncredited small role in a non important movie before this) his FIRST movie ever. And his acting was better then alot of other oscar nominees. He got an OSCAR nomination for his brilliant and superb acting in his first movie ever. So why in the FRAKING HELL isn't he a bigger star? Considering his big start in the bussines he should be in much bigger movies. Even though many of his movies is un-known , his acting is perfect and amazing.
This was Brad Dourif's FIRST movie ever (not counting his small uncredited role in a non important movie before this) his first movie ever. With SUPERB and BRILLIANT acting. In this scene, it's Billy as Judas; McMurphy as Christ. Elsewhere: McMurphy invites 12 inmates on a fishing trip, dies for the weaknesses of the entire ward, in the Disturbed ward an inmate passes Bromden saying 'I wash my hands of the whole thing.' As well as many other things, Kesey shoved biblical allusions up in this muhfucka.
I have to say I slightly disagree with you, for I do not think that Kesey intended Billy to be the Judas figure. I agree on the the other counts though. I didn't notice before there were 12 people on the fishing trip. Having said that, you'd be pretty hard pressed to find a wok of fiction that did not reference the bible.
@MasterClipEditor Fair point, and he might even have done it subconsciously or by accident. People unwittingly write mythology into things all the time because myths emerge directly from dreams and the psyche. The story follows the pattern of what Joseph Campbell called The Hero's Journey, and similarities can be found in pretty much all world hero myths.
@matthewinnj08 yes, definitely. hell, get it on blu ray if you have one. it's still been one of my top 5 favorite films of all time since i saw it 9 years ago.
I think this is much about how the psychology have developed. Ratchet does not see them as individuals and neither do the guards there or any of the personal. They want to isolate them from the society because they are different, and not integrate them. McMurphy makes them see themselves as individuals and makes them a part of the society. He is actually the one helping them. This shows how healthcare was/is handled and it is a critique. I also agree with hdfatboy2k.
Nurse Ratched IS trying to get them to be a part of society. Nurse Ratched is changing these men so they fit into the robotic society that we all are in.
Mac is trying to get them to realize their connections to nature, and have them abandon all of the idiocies of society. Which is why Chief saves himself by running straight into nature.
Kesey was much more radical a man than one who writes a book which's entire point is getting people back into society.
Nurse Ratched in her own way reminds me of a Character from an Australian Prison Drama called Prisoner Cell Block H:. She liked to control the lives of the Prisoners becuase outside the Prison, she didn't have a life. She only had an invalid mother, no friends, not even a boyfriend. I sometimes wonder what Ratched's Life was outside the Hospital. Also, Di Barker was like that on Bad Girls but not as bad as this woman. I wonder if Nursing Admission went down after her performance.
Nurse Ratchet (as in the tool that moves in one way to apply torque / or wretched being) is the force in society that supresses individuality, idiocincrosies, and joy. She is the dour face at the door of a teen makeout session. The mental institution is civilisation in general, Ratchet is the leadership gone wrong, supressing individuality instead of celebrating it. Using our insecurities to control us and suppress joy. This book/movie is Kesey's critical analogy of 50's America.
I understand how some of you hold Ratchet in contempt. To preserve my sanity, I will say however, that Billy made love to a woman, and therefore, should not feel any less of a man. Ratchet, on the other hand, should return to Med School and learn the counseling skill of moral empathy.
Nurse Ratched's job insolves, that she must accept all the rules in the ( FUCKING STUPID) system and she thinks, that she does the best for the patients. What a pity that the only person who would tell her, that she doesn't is R.P. McMurphy. :-(
the nurse was evil, she wasnt doing her job, her job is to help these people and make them better. Her threatening Billy with his mother was not in Billys interest, it was in HER interest to get back into power...there was no way Billy could benefit. Billy was better, he was confident and no longer stuttering, she fucked that up. Look at McMurphys facial expression...he can see that Billy is worse than ever, she deserved to be choked, he should have killed the fucking bitch
But Ratched could be trying to help them so much that she takes it too far, same with Billy's mother. She could honestly think it's the best thing for them when it's actually the worst, but she doesn't see it because she thinks she knows best because she's in charge.
*just did an essay on it* XD
Love Billy by the way, Brad Dourif is so good *huggles*
i have to hugeley disagree with you here, through the whole film she has been a control freak, patronising and pressuring the patients, not letting them do little things that would make their life more enjoyable (turning the television on)
But she could be behaving like that because she thinks it'll make them better (like the TV - she thinks changing their routine could distress the others)
We never actually get told why she does it though, not even in the book, so she could do it for any number of reasons - I just pulled that one 'cause no-one else has ^_^
Nurse Ratched hated McMurphy because when he came along her authority and power was threatened and she hated that. I would have loved to have seen what her life was like "outside" the Hospital. Did she have a boyfriend, a child, friends etc. When I see her I remember a character on an Australian Series called Prisoner Cell Block H: Her name was Vera Bennett, she was a Screw aka A Guard and the Inmates despised her. When a former inmate got out she went to her Apt and told her off.
I know 25 years can change a person's face, but I don't see much of a resemblance between Grima Wormtongue's face and his, but I accept they are the same people. I knew Brad has played the voice of Chucky and then played Grima, but I don't know much more about him and had no idea he was in this film.
She didnt want to lose control of him thats why she said that bull about his mother. then she was damn stupid when she left him in the office by himself upset where he harmed himself. the final thing being, she tried to blame mcmurphy for billys death, probably because she knew she had Fed up BIG time
