Ok...I have to admit I'm not very familiar with Endless Wire, but I as far as Kenny Jones time with The Who, two albums which he played on, each one producing a hit that you still hear on classic rock radio today. Not taking anything away from Zak Starkey, Just sayin.
I bet if The Who did not release this song it would never have cracked corporate monopoly radio playlists and now certain to be played for next 50 years.
As a drummer, i totally agree. The who died with entwhistle, mr palladino very good session man but not good enough for the who.Mark king[level 42] may have got near
LIVE him and simon townsend are too low in the mix, really it's the townsend and daltry show.the got the balance right with zak starkey although simon philips was very good on the '89 tour but maybe too technical. I speak from experience as i have seen them 20 times since '73.
This was the Who trying to find a new style to replace Keith who was the energy of the band, I think getting Kenney in was not good also he was not good for Rogers ego to have a guy tougher than him in the band. But Roger musically was right !
To all those Kenny Jones complainers.....When in doubt of his drumming ability listen to the FACES.He was not brought in to compete with Keith Moon.He was brought in to do a damn job.And he did a pretty damned good job on the material he had to play on.If you don't like Kenny Jones then don't venture past 1978.Zak Starkey is also a kick ass drummer.Hell Keith Moon taught him how to play.It is useless to put Kenny down. His place in time was the right time.
@enforcer4444 Kenney was a fine fit for the post-Moon Who. They were a sporting a different sound by the early 80's, reflected in Pete's songwriting. It fit Kenney's style well. Keith would have made it work his way, of course, with more of a classic Who sound. But the band wasn't doing new material in the classic Who style, again, reflected in Pete's writing. I like Kenney's work a lot on Face Dances and It's Hard.
@JohnnyCxviii Hey man check out Kenney with the FACES.His drumming was different with them.He was a little more loose it seems.Listen to his drumming on MISS JUDY'S FARM.He really kicked ass on that.Just a thought.Have a nice day and thanks for the reply.
I always thought this was some of Pete's best live lead playing. That shecter that time span. Sure miss the Loon and the Ox. Stay healthy guys...cheers!
Pete is a blistering guitarist these days - far better than he was in his younger days. I'm hoping to get tickets for the forthcoming Royal Albert Hall Quadraphenia show.
I'm certain this is from the last show in Toronto. Pete had a perm in his hair early in the tour. Also, he did play a black Shecter in the last show...I used to have the VHS of that show. It's funny, we must all be fans to argue about such details.
This video was shot at rehearsal for opening nite of the 1982 tour. Landover, MD. The Canadian flag is often displayed at NHL (hockey) arenas around the USA. That's why it's there. This I am 100% percent sure of as fact.
Yes, this is Landover, MD (the Cap Centre) NOT MLG! Where did this video come from? Its the prelude to the video they released for the song....they didn't like this version so they did it again.
OMG I cant spell... The old Capital Centre is NO MORE... Anyway I hope u guys find this interesting.. If anyone has any info throw it my way.. Only R & R & We all LIKE IT
Just thought u guys might find this interesting.... This is taken from Wikepedia.. I cannot prove it was filed there but this is the information I found..
The song had a video, shot at a rehearsal in Landover, Maryland, during their '82 US tour, which enjoyed consistent airplay on MTV upon its release. It also goes on to state that ironically that "It's Hard" was re released in 1997 with a corrected early flay in the song and the cd included a Live version of Eminence from Toronto 1982.
The so called "flaw" that occurs in the second chorus on the original release of this song was the result, I think Townshend, "Hiding on an Eminence Front", instead of just the song title, during the lead vocal overdub, which placed him a beat or so behind Daltrey. I always thought it sounded very spontaneous, and I was very disappointed that Pete's freeloading brother in law (who was in charge of the mid 90's remasters) took it upon himself to "correct" it.
The old Capital Centre in LARGO, MD has an AMERICAN Flag on one side & believe it or not a Canadian flag on the other which would have been stage left behind Townshend. I am not laying claim that this was filmed at the Capital Centre by any meants but the Cap Centre had a RED section UPPER, and Blue LOWER.. All I am saying is if this is TORONTO MAPLE LEAF Gardens, it is a carbon copy of the old Cap Centre in LARGO
This was shot in Toronto--check out the Canadian Flag hanging from the rafters. I don't think they do that in Maryland :-) . I vividly remember the MTV video from the time and remember preferring the video version of the music to what was on the studio album. To learn that there were two versions (both awesome) shot that day is great. What was the big arean in Toronto at the time?
If I recall correctly, they actually played twice in Toronto, once at the beginning of the tour, and the other being the last two nights. I think this must be from the earlier date, if it is from Toronto. This looks like it was probably shot at the same time as the version that MTV used to air, which aired way earlier than the end of the tour.
Also, Pete was playing the black Schecters anymore by the end of the tour. He was using a gold one, and a couple blues for the capo songs.
if anyone wondered if pete could jam...just noodle with the best.....fuck around....bullshit...find the pocket.....get the feel.....lingerrrrrr......he ..could, do it all.........WHO
One of Roger's rare guitar performances...Kenney had some chops - he was a better session drummer than live, but he was still great. Following Keith was a thankless, no-win proposition.
.. since the 80´s..(schoolkid fashion its called)(good bye (or wellcome) sister disco?) what a dissapointment
Después de su imagen ruda y sucia ¿quien les cree después de esto? que decepción parecen niños disco new wave de los 80 precisamente ¿algo tendría que ver la "Industria"?
Man, I don't know where you got this, but thanks for posting this. I have NEVER seen this clip. This looks like it must have been filmed the same day as the video that MTV used to show, but it's clearly a different take of the song.
I like the tone of the old Schecter Guitars pete used on that tour, wioth the Dimazarios in it and there use of pine and synthetics in the body made them a very bright guitar. I do not know if they are even still made. I had one in the mid 90's but sold it for a telecaster. Teh Schecter was half the weight and i must admit, had a cleaner sound overall.
Anyone know if they are still made??? I love petes Black one, mine was pearl white.
More specifically, the Schecter company still exists, but it's not even really the same company. Townshend's guitars were, I believe built from spare parts that were made by Schecter. Around 81-82, they started selling guitars. But by the mid 80's, the company had changed hands and the guitars were different.
Yeah,I have one of the new ones. As is already mentioned, they are not very good quality now. There also made in Taiwan or somewhere like that. They have a different head on the neck,i think it looked crap so changed it to a strat neck & got the head carved to a Telecaster shape(like the original)Real Tele necks are 2 short/wrong intination.I upgraded the pickups.Put another 'Schecter' decal on headstock. Now I've got a Pete Townshend signature Schecter, and its f***ing awesome looking & sounding
I love that Pete sang this...but does anyone else just wonder what it would sound like if Roger sang it - I'd buy his version as well if it ever existed. (Not downing the original version at all, I just like different versions of the same songs like The Who's Pure and Easy and Pete's solo version etc.) BTW is Roger's necklace a tiny gold guitar charm?
Hi all...this video was shot specifically for a television ad for Schlitz beer in 1982. Schlitz (I know it's hard to believe) was the U.S. sponsor of the tour. Molson sponsored the Canadian leg. At the time, no band had taken on a corporate sponsor for a tour.
My dad saw them in Milwaukee, WI during this tour. I have a shirt and it has the Schlitz logo on it. He said he was deaf for nearly three days afterward. God that must have been a kick ass show!
