1) Like most boys in Germany Josef Ratzinger was drafted into the army, but he didn't see action. He was not affiliated with the Nazi party.
2) If you're an atheist, why do you care if these are sins? Atheism promotes that the absolute moral authority is ultimately love of self. But if you are Catholic, then the focus of your life should be about God's will and glory, which in part is reflected in nature.
The church at one time use to be most influential political item of its time. people are just relizing that religion is coming back. BTW they never said pollution was a sin directly. The pope never approved of it you know. Its just the fact that the church's main belife is to presurve the earth. Less distrution. Less complaining. more peace. See it works.
