YEAH YEAH YEAH i "LL STICK TO MY WAVES CRACK API^^ I'M SO ADDICTED TO CRACKS AND MAKE LOADS OF MONEY FROM USING IT. ME SO HAPPY MY CLIENTS SO HAPPY STEALING.
if this is becoming a ssl vs api argument. some one answer this question.
why is it when i work in a room with a ssl, there is usually a rack of pres nearby, and there is usually several api lunchboxes laying around..and when i go into a room with an api.... i never see outboard ssl anything
People buy SSLs for routing and automation.
people buy API because they want it to sound good.
API charges way too much, honestly you pay for branding. No Automation,no instant recall, for 50k+? Hell no. When it will ultimately end up as a MP3 anyway, come off your high horse API.
Have you ever priced the components that go into one of these things? In the real world 50 grand for a new one of these is not out of line. Yeah, it isn't cheap but high end components aren't cheap. Transformers aren't cheap. The engineering that went into this thing isn't cheap. Hell have you ever priced a decent fader? They're between 30 and 60 bucks a piece by themselves.
It doesn't matter if it ends up as mp3. You start out as high end as possible. Otherwise, it's crap in crap out.
All those components do NOT cost that much to make, they are priced for mark up to attain the highest profits possible. That's why SSL created a competing console with just about the same foot print, but with a much more extended feature set. Automation, total recall,DAW control,Hardware virtual patching so that your outboard gear can be treated as a plugin. For guess what? 1/2 the price. SuperAnaloge summing as well. I'm just saying, compete API.
You can't compare the API to the SSL. It's a different purpose and design.
The SSL is op-amp based with no mic pre-amps. The API is a transformer balanced discrete design with 16 pre-amps and EQ. The API is about hardware, SSL -software
Add 16 high end preamps and eq to that SSL and it hits 50k easy.
Automation? you don't really need it in the board. Use the DAW. Besides, automation is coming on the API anyway.
A comparable NEVE costs about 100k. I would say API is competing quite nicely.
Why not,the selling point of the Matrix is integration WITH any hardware, including a API lunch box, with all the goodies you mentioned, and about at least 10k left over. And as I understand it , The 1608 DOES NOT come with everything you mentioned,it can be added al-carte. The SSL can serve Way more purposes than the API,with out mods, re-tooling.
Mercenary Audio - standard fit of a 1608 Console is: 16 548B Inputs with Mic/Line and Direct Output 12 550A Equalizers 4 560 Equalizers Apples - apples. 16 channels pre-eq Api LBox - $499 x 6 = $3000 512C Pre x 16 - $12172 550A EQ x 12 - $12192 560 EQ x 4 - $3043 SSL - Matrix - $21875 Total - $52282 Note- API548B not available sub 550A API is cheaper / better components and can be fixed by your tech. Will be around after SSL will no longer interface with new DAW's I'll take API -YMMV- :-)
I stand corrected on the standard fit, don't get me wrong,I would LOVE one of these things,it's just I can see the bath they are going to take on this. Especially when everything is getting smaller and cheaper, and lets face it. They said the same thing about a little company called Digidesign, about how they would NEVER catch up to tape and now look. The average consumer could care less how it gets mixed, they just CONSUME! US gear-heads are a dying breed I'm sad to say.
Tree 500 console is an API whore ...much more than API itself i think.really expensive going at about 40k for just case and faders
P.S. i know its practically on the same boat ..more expensive to have a full set rack filled with goodies but cheaper to expand~ NEVE5088 - plus you might get the extra cash on branding products available to use in your studio . The last one by Rupert Neve, it might turn into a collectors piece one day .. then save up for a manley gold mic and start making AMILLIONZ

Plus you can put other companies 500 series modules into the API if so desired. How cool is that!?
