Are the automovie themes the only way to customize the video? I'd like to add a box with the title in the background, but I want to customize the box. Is there a way to do this?
I use Pinnacle Studio but just having spent a fortune on a new computer for video editing

The earlier versions of Movie maker before live was the best and easiest people could get without affording for vegas etc. Especially for beginners.
This was supposed to be even better. buuut you just decided to dump EVERYTHING and just put in confusing stuff. Let me name one of the things that could've made this better that you dump.
The timeline, all the video effects, ability to put in titles without a video imported, and WAAAAAAAAAY MORE.
Windows live movie maker is a peice of shit and not worth it, it cant handle a nine minute video and keeps on freezing, the previous one Windows Movie Maker could and was a beast, thank you microsoft for making such a crap program. Will be moving to Sony Vegas now :)
i cant stand the no timeline also it only allows for one track of audio and that sucks i do like alot of the new features like adding text is waaaay easier and much mor customizable but just about everyone wants timeline back so give it back windows live movie maker was not well thought out
I don't like the new maker at all. I just got a new computer with windows 7 and now I can't make any videos because I use gif files. Why doesn't Windows7/Live support gif files? Is there any update or something to change that. It really sucks... :(
First off, you make such a deal about flip and ipod yet you were the only system basicly tht woud not except them. Anyway, where is the timeline??? I am 13 years old, and this is WAY to basic for a simple project. Thank God for Mac which i got fo Christmas. Windows Movie maker was a mondaine, frozen, piece of garbage software, but at least it had a way to accomplish your goal. Nobody would use this for pictures so why not cater to actual useers instead of making ads-imnotapcanymr
@vietpi You can change the duration from the "Video Tools" menu. If you highlight all your images it will change the duration for all selected. Hope this helps!
Windows Live Movie Maker SUCKS. They got rid of the storyboard and took away a bunch of effects. The Windows Vista Version was hundred times better. Thanks Windows for making this program worse.
Heres a question-I went to download the moviemaker live thingy-it installed to 100%-then immediately 'rolled back' all the way-saying it couldnt install any of the items because the download was cancelled-it wasnt by me...new laptop-no conflicting software...is there a setting I am not aware of-kinda frustrating when the ads have a toddler making movies on a laptop with no editing software baked in-can you help?
Heeey, i understand everything but one thing i don't understand, about the video. You enter a video in the movie, but is is only black screen, so i want a picture there,
because i don't have to tell something or what, but i don't know how to do...
it is so irritating, i am watching so long to get the answer, maybe you know?
@TheNaydeen Hi, I recommend that you download the latest beta version of windows live movie maker. For further updates, subscrive to LiveMovieMaker youtube channel.
Sorry, but I have to say that Windows Live Movie Maker was a travesty, you screwed up the timeline, the single most important feature in movie maker. Now we can't even put a full song on there without video, just ditch the new design, Windows Movie Maker is known for being easy but now it's nearly impossible.
@TheDucester Sorry, but I'm having trouble understanding your question. If you're trying to fade between scenes, you can use one of the fade effects between videos and images.
@WindowsVideos what the guy was asking: after putting text or caption on a video, how do you fade the caption or text. thats what he meant. i hope you guys finish this program. feels like alot of stuff is missing and its dumb down too much.
@llViperStrikerll check out the latest beta version of the windows live movie maker released on AUG 17 2010: explore.live. com/windows-live-essentials-beta
@WindowsVideos how do u put 2 music tracks that go together. Example. the movie maker in the past, u could put a music track, in another music track, u can mix them, can u mix music tracks in Live
Is it possible to install the classical Movie Maker (from Windows XP) on Windows 7? I don't get along with the new one, even though the HD format and the recognition of many file formats is nice, it seems the new movie maker sucks in cutting, the list of the classical one was thousand times more practical. And besides that the new one seems not to have the option to fade in a scene! And if I use an animation for that, the sound mixes up with the one from the other scene! It pretty sucks!
Everyone knows Windows Live Movie Maker is a sack of worthless garbage. You have to have the intelligence of an infant or have a serious case of down syndrome to even think that it's ok to release a piece of crap like that.
Any homeless person off the street can tell you that all Microsoft had to do is add some features to Movie Maker 6 and that's it. That's all they had to do but they're so stupid. a duuhhh. It's beyond belief.
windows live is ok for quick stuff, but it is very limited. when i installed windows 7 it removed windows movie maker 6.0 and replaced it with this crap. . .
I still prefer the way Movie Maker was. I am into stop motion animation. I have found this program impossible to navigate around in order to cut pics to a split second in order to animate properly. Before anyone sends any replies, bare in mind that I am not anti-new, I just need some specific instruction.
This may seem like a random question, but...how do you record/video yourself going through the programs on your own computer to do a tutorial like this?
@Darkspi Unfortunately the speed up/slow down effects and narration didn't make the upgrade to Windows Live Movie Maker. Definitely let the developers know you'd like to see them included in future releases:
@skateboardinmonkey its possible all you have to do is edit the duration like in the seconds.if you want one second you put the duration at one for each picture.for slow motion you just put the duration at 8-9 i think or I think it goes just to 5 but just ask the question to @Windowsvideo
@sk8boardinmonkey Sorry, but the speed up/slow down effects didn't make the upgrade to Windows Live Movie Maker. However, If you must use those effects, they're still available in Windows Movie Maker 2.6.
I installed the old 2.6 movie maker. The new one is stripped down (no audio video storryboard). The option to save to anything else other then WMV (not widely used sorry microsoft) is also annoying.
All and all if you are new to making videos windows live movie maker is for you. However, if your not (significant amount d users) I wouldn't recommend it all. I found it extremely frustrating when trying to perform anything else except the most basic task.
This is a huge issue I have with the new windows releases. As a tech if new software comes out I will figure out how to use relatively quickly. I'm also of the opinion while it's important to make software easier to use it shouldn't come at the expense of functionality. I hate the ribbon system. I have moved over from paid software to free software because of this issue. The idea that everything could be solved with 5 buttons may appeal to homer. But doesn't work in the real world.
I've been filming in HD with my Nikon D5000. Now I'd like to put it together. But, how can I keep the large fullscreen images and quality, when prossesing through live movie maker? Movie maker compress it and makes it smaller. I dont like that.
@TheHappyProductions1 Sorry, but the speed up and slow down effects didn't make the upgrade to Windows Live Movie Maker. Definitely let the developers know you'd like to see it included in future releases:
1 thing i don't like about windows live movie maker is that when i try to put stuff into the side to make a video it frezze up and close out so i am sticking to windows movie maker
@pikupstix4 Sorry, but the speed up/slow down effects didn't make the upgrade to Windows Live Movie Maker. Please let the developers know you'd like to see the effects make it back into future releases:
The new features of live photo gallery are great, though I don't like how it runs so much slower than the Vista photo gallery. The live software is great for average joes, because it's simple, but it's too simple for anyone who's a power user...
to be honest, I prefer the Windows Movie Maker 6(Vista Version over the Live Software. I have migrated it into Windows 7. The new live version is good for piecing photos together and creating simple clips with no advanced editing, but it does not have the features that MM6 has for advanced video editing. I like the ribbon layout of the new Live version, though I prefer the old-fashioned version of the timeline and imported media objects, as it is very similar to Camtasia Studio.
@GamingForLife96 You need to save your creation as a movie instead of a project. You can do that from the save menu or from the sharing menu on the top right of the ribbon.
@Draconium666 Unfortunately the the speed up/slow down effects didn't make the upgrade to Windows Live Movie Maker along with the ability to separate the audio and video tracks from a video file. I know the developers have received feedback, but please let them know you'd like to see these features in future releases too:
soooo... I've noticed there are some major changes to this version of Movie maker. It's not as powerful, in my opinion, as the older version that came with XP. Or I'm just not able to find certain things... For example, I'm not able to find an option to speed up video... And how would one go about removing an audio track from a video?
I love most things about Win7, and I love that they /finally/ updated paint, but this is a step backwards =\
Movie Maker live is much worse than the old one on windows vista. On the old one you could edit videos much better and everything was more overviewable than on the new one.
Thank god that there is a download for the old one
This link doesn't seem to be working. It brings me to a page that says "no results found". If you have another link that I could use that would be great. Thank you for helping me out.
YouTube actually formats links funky, so make sure there are no spaces in the URL when you paste it and you should have no issues. It's also the first result when you search "Windows Movie Maker 2.6".
I actually tried downloading version 2.6 and it doesn't seem to be as up to date as the original one that was on vista. Is there a way to download the version that came with windows vista?
@shikamaru5608 If you have access to a computer with Vista Home Premium or Ultimate you can just copy the Movie Maker folder and run the exe file. Works for me!
Where do you download it from? I have 6.1 I got from a computer with Vista Home Premium (the one with HD editing). You can just copy the folder and run the exe.
Oh screw this. I'm gonna find a different program to edit movies with. You're NOT telling me how to use it. All this does is PITCH the stupid program.
You can see if it's included in your copy of Windows 7 by searching "Windows Live Movie Maker" from your start menu. If it's not, you can download it for free here:
You can't use Windows Live Movie Maker to directly import from your webcam, but you can import videos you've already created with other software using your webcam.

@davisteelers14 You're best solution is to capture the desired video frame with the snipping tool and then add as a image.

how can you slow vids down?????
TheHappyProductions1 1 year ago
@TheHappyProductions1 Sorry, but the speed up and slow down effects didn't make the upgrade to Windows Live Movie Maker. Definitely let the developers know you'd like to see it included in future releases:

The new features of live photo gallery are great, though I don't like how it runs so much slower than the Vista photo gallery. The live software is great for average joes, because it's simple, but it's too simple for anyone who's a power user...
CubeComputerChannel 1 year ago
to be honest, I prefer the Windows Movie Maker 6(Vista Version over the Live Software. I have migrated it into Windows 7. The new live version is good for piecing photos together and creating simple clips with no advanced editing, but it does not have the features that MM6 has for advanced video editing. I like the ribbon layout of the new Live version, though I prefer the old-fashioned version of the timeline and imported media objects, as it is very similar to Camtasia Studio.

how do i change .wlmp to wmv or avi?
GamingForLife96 1 year ago

PFFFFFFT! yeah right. That thing sucks on my computer, and guess what. I'VE GOT WINDOWS 7!

Movie Maker live is much worse than the old one on windows vista. On the old one you could edit videos much better and everything was more overviewable than on the new one.
Thank god that there is a download for the old one
Y0y0Jester 2 years ago 4
Could you please tell me where I can download the old one? I just got windows 7 and I can't stand this version of moviemaker.
shikamaru5608 2 years ago
You can download it directly from Microsoft here:

This link doesn't seem to be working. It brings me to a page that says "no results found". If you have another link that I could use that would be great. Thank you for helping me out.
shikamaru5608 1 year ago
YouTube actually formats links funky, so make sure there are no spaces in the URL when you paste it and you should have no issues. It's also the first result when you search "Windows Movie Maker 2.6".
WindowsVideos 1 year ago
I actually tried downloading version 2.6 and it doesn't seem to be as up to date as the original one that was on vista. Is there a way to download the version that came with windows vista?
shikamaru5608 1 year ago
That's the most recent version before Windows Live Movie Maker that was optimized for Vista.
WindowsVideos 1 year ago
@shikamaru5608 If you have access to a computer with Vista Home Premium or Ultimate you can just copy the Movie Maker folder and run the exe file. Works for me!

Where do you download it from? I have 6.1 I got from a computer with Vista Home Premium (the one with HD editing). You can just copy the folder and run the exe.

You can't use Windows Live Movie Maker to directly import from your webcam, but you can import videos you've already created with other software using your webcam.
