I don't think it lacks atmosphere. For sure it's a wasted opportunity because I liked the first 40 minutes but then I think the movie took the wrong direction. But those scenes like the bleeding girl in the bathroom or the first time we see the clown (the fight with the clown is comical) or those eyes on the television creates enough atmosphere and suspense. All those elements and those moments makes it an horror movie, a not-so-scary one but horror is not supposed to be scary
The last movies I have seen that "scared" are Orphanage and The Mist. But scared is the wrong word. They just had sparse moments of tension and suspense that made me anxious and some "jump on the seat" moments. But I wouldn't call that "fear" just "suspence". Those who seek to be scared by horror movies I think keep mistaking the feeling of "suspence" with the feeling of "distarbance" or "revulsion" and ends up watching gore movies.

anyway this is a movie by Joe Dante. He has his unique style, he makes movies that are paranormal and slightly scary but that a global audience can enjoy hence they are never too gory or too dirty or too violent.
Not only that but he makes his movies as if they were from the 80's (a bit like Tarantino did with Planet Terror) they are supposed to have the 80's vibes of movies like Gremlins, Labyrinth, The Dead Zone. But this movie still belongs to the horror genre

Jesus Christ, this movie is awful. The performances are pathetic, maybe excepting the blond girl. The story isn't something new, I mean... "A monster who feeds of your fears". That sounds like "It" from Stephen King (but I don't know if the director took some things from that book or whatever). Anyways, in my opinion this movie is very predictible and a wasting of time.

Reminded me of the old teen horror series "Goosebumps" on Nickolodean in the mid 90s. Used to be some pretty scary episodes and shows you dont need the usual blood and guts to give people the chills.
I saw this moviee last year when I was 12 for my bestfriends sleepover party with 12 other people, we went at 11 to watch it to make it more scary! I got scared at some points (eg the clown and ghostgirl parts) but it was so good! I as sat in the middle which is good, i would of freaked out if i was on the end of the row!
I generally steer clear of kid 'horrors', because the directors like to insult their young audience by using the most clichéd tricks in the book. But even though this wasn't really a 'horror', it still freaked me out. Dante did brilliantly...when a kid goes to see a scary movie, they want to be scared, not mildly alarmed. The jerkish way the little girl moved freaked me out. It was like the hallway scene neat the end of Terminator. And the clown...holy crow that was scary. Joe Dante is the BEST.
For its target audience (kids/tweens); it's definitely creepy. Even older audiences who aren't comfortable watching scary movies will find this a tad unnerving.
However, this is far too tame for horror fans. Episodes of CW's Supernatural are scarier than this. Also there's huge gaps in logic throughout the film which will piss off anyone who appreciates realistic reactions.

Ex. The kids don't try and lock the door or ask the crazy guy how to seal the hole...Why the fuck not?

Reminded me of the old teen horror series "Goosebumps" on Nickolodean in the mid 90s. Used to be some pretty scary episodes and shows you dont need the usual blood and guts to give people the chills.

I saw this moviee last year when I was 12 for my bestfriends sleepover party with 12 other people, we went at 11 to watch it to make it more scary! I got scared at some points (eg the clown and ghostgirl parts) but it was so good! I as sat in the middle which is good, i would of freaked out if i was on the end of the row!

I generally steer clear of kid 'horrors', because the directors like to insult their young audience by using the most clichéd tricks in the book. But even though this wasn't really a 'horror', it still freaked me out. Dante did brilliantly...when a kid goes to see a scary movie, they want to be scared, not mildly alarmed. The jerkish way the little girl moved freaked me out. It was like the hallway scene neat the end of Terminator. And the clown...holy crow that was scary. Joe Dante is the BEST.

For its target audience (kids/tweens); it's definitely creepy. Even older audiences who aren't comfortable watching scary movies will find this a tad unnerving.
However, this is far too tame for horror fans. Episodes of CW's Supernatural are scarier than this. Also there's huge gaps in logic throughout the film which will piss off anyone who appreciates realistic reactions.

Ex. The kids don't try and lock the door or ask the crazy guy how to seal the hole...Why the fuck not?
