I've used FRAPS, in movies I've checked "detect best sound input", for record sound do this if you have vista or 7:
Go into your control panel open up "SOUND"
Click on the RECORDING Tab
Right click anywhere in the white area under device list. Click on "Show Disabled Devices"
Now the list should grow and allow you to select "What you hear" or "Stereo Mix" or similar. You must select the disabled "What you hear" or "Stereo Mix" and right click on it to select "Enable". Now try to record again.
