What a song! Made me cry as I don't remember if i said goodbye to my wife when our divorce was finalized and we parted ways. Damn . . . still crying . . .
I recall a show years ago on "Austin City Limits" w/ Steve Earle, Allison Krause, EmmyLou, Willie and some other greats performing a dedication show of all Townes Van Zandt's music.I believe this was cut from that show? Wish I recorded it. :-<
@NewEnglandBudo Just found the Steve Earle, EmmyLou Harris & Townes VanZant sing "If I needed you" in the playlist on the right. Google Austin City Limits +Celebration of Townes Van Zant episode. Besides the aforementioned, add John Van Zant, Lyle Lovret, and more. Just ordered the DVD.
One thing that I enjoy most about Steve's music is that it is highly unlikely I'll ever end up hearing it in the supermarket or at Walmart [not that I set foot in Walmart, but you get my drift].
Thanks for posting this. This is so beautiful, Steve pulls me into the song and Emmy Lou takes me away way with her and I want to cry in November, I don't know why.
I am speechless and crying and so happy to hear this. Thank you so much for posting. Have loved Steve for 20 yrs easily; he and Emmylou are ethereal together. So much lovely pain and longing.
Wow!! Had never heard this before. Strong and soft at the same time. I could listen to Emmylou all day and every day. The quintessential female country voice. This is an awesome duet.
While I agree with everyone about how beautifully performed this song is... my real appreciation is for the incredibly underrated songwriting talent of Steve Earle. Regardless of whether or not you agree with his politics, Steve Earle is one of the best songwriters ever.
This is one of the most beautiful songs ever; love the versions by each of them on their own, but this brings it to a whole 'nother level. And don't diss the Lanois! I love the beautiful textures his playing brings. Room for all the versions friends. It's just a killer of a song anyway it's done, but these two are two of our best singers alive today and together they're pure magic.
I am fairly sure this was never released - you must have had a bootleg version. Good luck finding it. They have done the song together at various events which both attended. You might look for boots of one of the Concerts for a Landmine Free World that Emmylou organized and Steve attended.
It just amazes me how he pulls his songs from sooooo deeep within. Pared with Emmylou its just perfect. If you close your eyes this song will take you away.

I love this song. Huge fan of both. Thanks to my father I am a fan of Emmylou Harris since I was a thirteen year old country boy from Co. Kilkenny, Ireland.
Emmylou is as sweet as ever, the epitome of the Pure True Country Girl. I'm so astounded at the God Given Talent of Mr Steve Earle. Tears are shed again, and ya know it's not just due to what you the artists have done. no it has to do with what I've lived. Stay Close to us Steve & emmylou...a few of us need you...

With all the shit Ive put myself through in my life, all this shit Ive seen and done, its shocks me that these two songs can just blow me away. When I thought I was hard and crusty. I swear Ive actually LIVED this fucking song. AMAZING. These two people, Steve and Emmy Lou, are two of the most amazing talents ever.
There is something heart wrenching about this duet...surely Emmylou must have seen and felt the echo of Gramm Parsons and Townes Van Zandt in Steve Earle's persona at that time in his life, and wondered how long he would be with us, Sometimes there seems to be a fascinating element to Emmylou's personality...she seems fascinated by those men who are her polar opposite, she the clean living angelic artist, they the self destructive downward spiraling uncontrolled poetic rebels. Fascinating.
This is not Tecumseh Valley. You can find a really moving version of that song by Townes himself here. This is a great song covered by Emmy-lou on her incredible Wrecking Ball album. Steve did an entire album called Townes in 2009. He was his mentor and friend.
I think mrr419 ws responding to the question below:
"What the hell is the name of a Steve Earl song....I can't remember it. About a girl. "She said her, was Caroline." That, of course is Tecumseh Valley by Townes. This video, of course is Goodbye by Steve.
Not sure if misslauren66 was talking about this video or not.
The song is Tecumseh Valley and it's by Tonwnes VanZandt not Steve Earle. Nanci Griffith does a magnificent cover of it - of course everything she does is magnificent.
Steve Earle did cover this on his Train a Comin' album, but the original is indeed by Townes Van Zandt. I can't say I've yet heard a version that doesn't bring tears, the hallmark of a truly great song.
What the hell is the name of a Steve Earl song....I can't remember it. About a girl. "She said her, was Caroline"...Something about she left home to look for work, and then she took to whoring" Is it "Something" Valley"? Tecumsa Valley"??? Damn it! Had it saved on PC that crashed. Anybody, help?
To be or not to be flaky...Oh, by the way, what's the meaning of "flaky"? English is not my mother language, sorry! I'd just say it seems like Gram Parsons old times?
@rbilleaud Flaky? How so? I see genius in song choice and in harmony....genius in who she chooses to sing harmony with. I honestly don't understand the flaky comment. Please eludicate. Thanks.
Flaky in her personal life, not musically (i.e., her support for radically leftist causes). I see no problem in a person who supports animal rights or feminist causes - for example - but the organizations they choose to support should truly support the causes they claim to support rather than serve as cover for some other hidden agenda.
Thanks for the edification. I'm only about the music and don't concern myself with an artist's political leanings unless they write and perform songs about said leanings. I happen to love some artists that others would think are very leftist. Maybe I do because I'm a bit left of center myself.
Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm the same way about my music. I don't particularly care about an artist's politcal leanings, I was just being a guy and saying that if I were in a position to be in a relationship with her, that part of her might get on my nerves. I'm not socially conservative myself (economically is another matter) - I say people should pretty much be able to do what they want, I am opposed, however, to organizations who are disingenuous about their real objectives.
I almost felt bad for enlightening you, but then I figured you already knew...but I may just be one of those other 3 billion women (not that you'd ever find me, oh and I don't have an angel voice at.all.)
This is just so touching - Emmylou is outstanding - sad, she just keeps getting better & more beautiful...Steve Earle is talented, very great duet....thanks for the share & don't pull this off - please....
I remember a set like this with the two of them on a Jools Holland Later Show circa '97/'98 but I dont know if this is it. I remember the guitar being so simple yet hauntingly beautiful.
I was at a Steve Earle gig last night and he introduced this as the first song he wrote sober. Like Steve, it just gets better as the years go by. And Emmylou adds so much to every song she sings harmonies on.
@8mv1 He wrote it in rehab at Buffalo Valley in Hohenwald, TN. The first time he played it in public was at the "Harlen Howard Birthday Bash". Every star in Nashville was there, and they all went dead silent when he started singing this. Everybody from Brooks and Dunn to Chet Atkins were there. It was amazing.
@8mv1 i've seen Emmylou so many times singing harmony, she never tries to take the spotlight but for some reason she always does...i love her so much...
Didnt want this to end

I agree the Emmylou is the greatest female singer - in her genre.

@darlincommitme Still hope for us middle-aged, beardy guitarists then?
garrym417 1 year ago
@garrym417
Sure..... if you are Steve Earle!!
Seriously, I think the average woman is more attracted to the whole person than the average man. So best of luck!

How sexy is Emmylou Harris?
byan85 2 years ago 3
This is not Tecumseh Valley. You can find a really moving version of that song by Townes himself here. This is a great song covered by Emmy-lou on her incredible Wrecking Ball album. Steve did an entire album called Townes in 2009. He was his mentor and friend.

I think mrr419 ws responding to the question below:
"What the hell is the name of a Steve Earl song....I can't remember it. About a girl. "She said her, was Caroline." That, of course is Tecumseh Valley by Townes. This video, of course is Goodbye by Steve.
Not sure if misslauren66 was talking about this video or not.
darlincommitme 2 years ago
The song is Tecumseh Valley and it's by Tonwnes VanZandt not Steve Earle. Nanci Griffith does a magnificent cover of it - of course everything she does is magnificent.
mrr419 2 years ago

BALKISDREAMER 2 years ago
Even at 62, Emmylou is one of my all-time fantasy girls. She looks terrific - and natural. She's a little flaky, but I love her voice. Well done.
rbilleaud 2 years ago
@rbilleaud Flaky? How so? I see genius in song choice and in harmony....genius in who she chooses to sing harmony with. I honestly don't understand the flaky comment. Please eludicate. Thanks.
FloatingGrin 2 years ago
Flaky in her personal life, not musically (i.e., her support for radically leftist causes). I see no problem in a person who supports animal rights or feminist causes - for example - but the organizations they choose to support should truly support the causes they claim to support rather than serve as cover for some other hidden agenda.
rbilleaud 2 years ago
Thanks for the edification. I'm only about the music and don't concern myself with an artist's political leanings unless they write and perform songs about said leanings. I happen to love some artists that others would think are very leftist. Maybe I do because I'm a bit left of center myself.
FloatingGrin 2 years ago 2
Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm the same way about my music. I don't particularly care about an artist's politcal leanings, I was just being a guy and saying that if I were in a position to be in a relationship with her, that part of her might get on my nerves. I'm not socially conservative myself (economically is another matter) - I say people should pretty much be able to do what they want, I am opposed, however, to organizations who are disingenuous about their real objectives.
rbilleaud 2 years ago
OK then, it's all good because I seriously doubt you'll ever be in any position to be in a relationship with her.
FloatingGrin 2 years ago
*sigh* yeah her and another 3 billion women around the world. It's all for the best though since I imagine my wife would be pretty pissed.
rbilleaud 2 years ago
I almost felt bad for enlightening you, but then I figured you already knew...but I may just be one of those other 3 billion women (not that you'd ever find me, oh and I don't have an angel voice at.all.)
Celebrate your wife, take it from experience :)

This is just so touching - Emmylou is outstanding - sad, she just keeps getting better & more beautiful...Steve Earle is talented, very great duet....thanks for the share & don't pull this off - please....

Anyone know where and when this great song was recorded?
s52390 2 years ago
I remember a set like this with the two of them on a Jools Holland Later Show circa '97/'98 but I dont know if this is it. I remember the guitar being so simple yet hauntingly beautiful.

I was at a Steve Earle gig last night and he introduced this as the first song he wrote sober. Like Steve, it just gets better as the years go by. And Emmylou adds so much to every song she sings harmonies on.
8mv1 2 years ago 13
@8mv1 In Hardcore Troubadour, his son JT states he thinks this song was actually written as a goodbye to drugs.
ljspaziani 1 year ago
@8mv1 He wrote it in rehab at Buffalo Valley in Hohenwald, TN. The first time he played it in public was at the "Harlen Howard Birthday Bash". Every star in Nashville was there, and they all went dead silent when he started singing this. Everybody from Brooks and Dunn to Chet Atkins were there. It was amazing.

I had never heard the story of the first performance - thanks for telling it.

@8mv1 i've seen Emmylou so many times singing harmony, she never tries to take the spotlight but for some reason she always does...i love her so much...
