My loader back in the day could load a SABOT or HEAT round in 4 seconds or less which is faster than any Soviet style or NATO autoloader tank,or neeed be the commander can load.A great crew is awsome because when I was a Tank Commander/Platoon Sergeant we used to wipe out the 1st Cav,4th ID, and any other unit who went to NTC against us the 11th ACR.

@happosai27 I'm not sure about the French and Japanese, but I know for a fact that the Korean K1s and K1A1s do not use auto-loaders. I did a couple CALFEXs with them while I was over there and got to hop in side their tanks. The K1s use the same 105mm that was originally on the M1, and the K1A1s us the same 120mm that is currently used on every M1A1/A2.

As I stand in the loaders spot in an M1 my head just pokes out of the hatch, but when I stood in the loaders spot in the K1, my whole upper torso was exposed.

Yes, they do. Just the standerd side arm or any small carbine inside the turret incause of an enmergeny escape incause of fire Etc. I do know that it is not uncomon to have few Hand Grenades near you to prevent infantry on climbing ontop of the tank.
From what I've seen a lot of the tankers wear a 9 millimeter pistol. But in a crowded tank who wants something on their hip? Plus in every tank there is at least one carbine or m-16. There is an assault rifle since you never know, the tank might become inoperable in a combat zone. The tankers cant be left unarmed.

@mangooseman95 For initial entry training, the USMC probably has better training from what I've seen (9 weeks of training as opposed to 6 weeks), though I received plenty of training on the A2s when we got them at my last unit. Be careful, though. The Army is drawing down by 140,000 soldiers right now, and also has no need for a strong Armor force. Just food for thought...

@ArmyArmorOfWar A3s? Funny, you must be from the future. My last unit just go state-o-the-art M1A2 SEP V.2 w/ CROWS and LAGS. The newest version of the tank. And Marine tank training is three weeks longer than ours, plus they're trained in the gunner's stationed from the get-go. Army tankers only get driving and loading training in OSUT.
Then abrams is as good if not better than the challenger 2 but it doesnt come quite as good as the french leclerc and of course the always dominent german tanks, the leopard 2.
@number5ism you have to graduate from marines first so if you're worried about that, then you mise well not even consider joining because tank school isn't anything like marine boot camp
Sad that Fort Knox is no longer the Armor home of Excellence. I was the 19K COurse manager for the M1 Tank School located in New Jersey. We lost our tanks, I lost my job and now we are a light infantry unit..............argggggggggggh
@TheNewMetFan Look there are many great tanks out there, but not many have been battle tested, for example the Challenger 2 has better armor than the m1a2 and has been battle tested, but not extensively as the m1a2 and for that reason many people claim it as the best tank, but to answer your question is very difficult. I really like the Leopard 2 and the Russian T-90s series. The Russian T-90s have some very good things the Abrams doesn't have like guided missiles.
