I think it absoutely Matters who you vote for! Penn,u always amaze me! Your opinions are so couragous.. because Everyone Does know who you are! I personally do not agree with practically anything about Barack H. Obama. namley that his amazing health care reform exempts him his family and anyone else whitehouse ish. and because hes taken like 3 "vacations" already and hes not been in power that long. 3 the nobel thing, neednt say more and Christian or muslim hes still a blabbering idiot who makes retarded split decisions and cant talk
Example, my family is generally conservative, but by the time the primary rolled around, McCain had already locked up the GOP Nomination, and the actual conservatives, Thompson and Hunter, had been steamrolled.
So, we voted Obama in the Dem Primary instead (it's open voting here), hoping he and Hillary would fight to the end, and weaken the survivor.
Penn is contradicting himself when he says not to vote AGAINST someone and then he advocates voting for a random wack-job to rebuke the establishment. Isn't that voting AGAINST status quo? Contradictory!
The problem with voting for somebody is unless you vote for the winner, your vote will be stolen by the electoral system. If 51% of your state votes for candidate A, then that candidate "wins" your state. All 100% of the electoral votes are his. In essence, if you voted FOR one of the other 49% candidates B,C,D,E,F, or G, then your vote will be STOLEN and cast in favor of candidate A anyway. American-style democracy is a crazy dysfunctional system.
I'm at a loss. For years I would write-in a vote for Johnny Carson at every election. He passed away and I don't care for Leno or Letterman, so I've been writing in Bob Newhart. Don't think he'll win though....Do have to ask, where does this myth of a 2-party systecome from? the media? There's nothing in the constitution about how many parties are allowed. Many countries in the world operate reasonably with multiple-parties.
Sure you can. I voted against the major party assholes, but I didn't vote for Bob Barr.
The LP wants to include "NONE OF THE ABOVE IS ACCEPTABLE" on every ballot. This would be an option in any free country. (In fact, before Lech Walenca won the election in Poland, NOTA won.)
But that's *EXACTLY* what I'm saying, and I believe Penn was saying. *DON'T* choose the lesser of two evils. You have the right to say, NO I don't like either of these people and refuse to support them by voting for them, And yes, most of America fails at being American. I didn't mean to single you out, sorry for that.
he's right he's not a big enough celebrity however he's way more knowledegable. by the by I love the show Bull#### . you people should watch it if you love this!!!
As long as there are exactly two candidates you can vote against one of them by voting for the other. Two is the only number where this is possible. One candidate doesnt give you any options, and three or more means you can relaly only vote in favor of your chocie rather than against a specific candidate. I know that i voted for Obama not because his absurdly overambitious message of hope touched my heart, but because republicans are a political disaster and needed to be out of office.
So you are supporting Obama by voting for him. Congragulations. You are part of the problem. You didn't vote according to who you think the best candidate was, but you voted to spite someone else. That is in my mind the best way to throw away your vote. Good job. We do have more than two candidates. You *can* vote for who you think is the best. But you didn't. You fail as an American.
actually, your philosophy assumes that in our political system there is an honest politician whose aim isn't to screw us in some way. truth is, there are none at the national level, and it is the fault of the american people, who fail mush more than i at being americans (as if that is still something to be proud of). i chose the lesser of 2 evils, which given the fact that i am only one individual in a country full of imbeciles, is the best any of us can do now.
Heres a simple logical fact. If i want to vote for anyone as long as it isnt McCain/Palin then i AM voting for the person i think is the best candidate. The qualification in my min for being the best candidate is simple NOT being McCain/Palin. Clinton would have gotten my vote. Ron Paul would have gotten my vote. The only other option was obama, and since he was not McCain he became the best candidate. Get it?
No, I don't get it. What Penn is describing is very similar to the difference between a positive/affirmitive vote and a negative vote, aka "sincere" vs "strategic" voting. If you vote for someone becasue you sincerely believe in their message, that's sincere voting. If you're voting "against" someone (strategically trying to make sure so-and-so does NOT win), that's strategic or "sophisticated" voting. IE vote sincerely or don't vote at all because strategic voting empowers the 2 party system.
And yet simply voting sincerely does not disempower the two party system. The media decides how many viable candidates we are presented with, not us. No amount of sincere voting will have any effect on that. The 2 party system will be here as long as the USA exists in its current form, and as long as its here you CAN vote against.
I disagree.... let's look at it more closely. If people vote strategically, it could be (and probably often is) misinterpreted by the mainstream candidates as having more support than they really do. Perhaps a winning candidate would think "wow, I have a mandate from the people to do xyz!" when in reality the folks who voted "against" the other guy really didn't support the winner as much as opposed the loser. If they had voted sincerely this is much less likely to occur.
if you hate both candidates, but hate one so significantly that you would gladly vote for the other just to hurt their chances, than that is voting against. its called choosing the lesser of two evils, and i employed that principle when i voted for john kerry, even though i still think hes an ass; at least it was a vote AGAINST bush. when you given two bowls of shit and the only difference is the smell, but you gotta have one, what choice do you have?
The the point though. You're not voting *against* someone by voting for the other guy. You are pledging your support to whoever you voted for. There are more than two bowls to chose from, there are more than two candidates. You can vote for someone who is not going to win. You can chose to not eat shit. You can chose to eat the smaller plate across the room that they don't want you to see. You just have to go get it. It's not what everyone else is eating, but why should you be forced to chose.
Im sorry but no matter how you try to bend it, there are alot of people who vote every four years because one candidate or another terrifies them. Sarah Palin terrified me with her ridiculous aura of ineptitude, and McCain scared me with the chance he would die in office and she would become president. I did not want him to be president so i went out and voted for his opponent. I voted against him.
No, you voted for Obama. There *is* a difference. You could have voted for any of the other candidates or simply written in a random name. Instead you chose to vote for a candidate you didn't especially like to spite another candidate you disliked more.
Voting is wrong. If you vote for gun control you vote to remove my ability to defend myself. If you vote to raise taxes you vote to steel my money. If you vote for anything you are supporting violence.
This is f-ing awesome. I voted for Ron Paul by writing him in. It was a toss up for me between Rex, the guy who hangs out by the curb downtown, Ron Paul, Homer Simpson, Courage the cowardly dog, or Bob Barr. In the end I went with Ron Paul cause I thought it would make more of an impact.
Unfortunately, unless the individual you write in is "registered" as a write in vote in your state, then it doesn't matter who you write down - it won't be counted, and it won't have an impact. Its sad but true...
Well if enough people do it, it does make a slight impact, I think. Writing in "none of the above" for example. I read somewhere that Mickey Mouse gets a lot of votes. It's better than voting for either crappy media picked candidate, in my opinion.
the lesser of 2 evils is still fucking evil. the older i have gotten to more pissed off i have gotten that we have become complacant in voting for a strictly 2 party super system. i finally got pissed off about 3 years ago and said screw this i am gonna take a good look at what i believe in and what i want and proud to say i voted for bob barr. he didn't win obviously but for the first time i felt my vote actually meant something
My hat off to you, this is my frustration as well. Our politicians pass bills on party lines and voters vote based on what news channel they watch! It's fucking ridiculous.
I think we need a non-partisan government. Not a single-party government, just a no-party government. Then - holy shit - people would actually have to start thinking critically!
I did vote for Obama and I do think he is doing a decent job (given the circumstances) but I feel that he didn't get voted in for the right reasons.
Great video, Penn. I've seen most of these now, and this one is my favorite.
I can't tell you how many times I've cringed hearing someone talking about having to vote 'for the lesser of two evils.' Why in holy fuck would anyone ever vote for someone who they think is 'evil?' Until people wake up and start voting for whomever they truly think is 'good,' we will never be free from this two-party tyranny.
In my country the abstention was about 30% in the last elections and people keeps voting against from the last 20 years.
When most of the people votes against someone, the nation ends up electing an asshole ( in the last time was Leonel Fernandez ) who believes his a messiah who saved the country, and with the people believing his crap and no restriction for reelection, can you imagine something worst?
I would tell you to run for president too, but I know that is the last thing you'd probably want to do (at least seriously), since if we can't trust anyone with that kind of power you're certainly included under the category of everyone; I don't always agree with you but you always make me think and provide me with an outlet to hear a viewpoint outside of my close friends who agree with me on most things anyway, so thank you
Penn should be our president. I love his views, and how honest he is about everything. He's actually surprisingly humble about himself too, which is great. It's a shame he most likely wouldn't take the job.
I hold a position in the Libertarian Party here in KY and it amazed folks that I consistently told them to vote for whoever they legitimately thought would do the best job... even if it meant voting Communist Party. The only vote that is wasted is a vote for the "lesser of two evils." In fact, voting the lesser of two evils is an evil act in itself... because you voted for EVIL! Vote for someone you think is good. Vote for someone you think will do a great job. Vote your conscience.
1st: I voted Bob Barr, I wanted my vote to really count.
2nd: Penn, you said a person can not vote against someone. Strategically you can. In Feb 08 - Rush L. suggested that republicans go out and register as Dems and vote for Hilly to undermine Obama. Rush suspected that Hilly could not beat McCain but Obama could. I think that a strategic party change to undermine the opposing candidate counts as voting against someone. This very likely was NOT Rush's idea, as he seems such a poor strategist.
Avth76 Eh? Which part is dumb? Bob Barr or Voting against someone? I did not vote for Bob Barr but in favor of the Libertarian principals of smaller nationalist government. When you vote Libertarian you pretty much know you are NOT going to win but what counts is how many people are NOT suckers in the bipartisan nonsense. As for voting against someone, my statement was simply an observation of comments and reports made by Rush Limbaugh and backers of the republican party from Feb 08 to present.
unless their underage. But that's wrong in many cultures, but some cultuees practice sex before 18. So next time you think about voting for a Child Protection act or some bullshit, remember, your vote doesn't count in other countries, and you cant vote against child porn. rofl. Also, you cant vote against community standards, , so if you move to a community, you have to act accordingly. We could get detained for being ourselves. fuck.

I'll beast it, I intellectually shred this siht. And no that's not a spelling error.
You won't get the perfect candidate, so you better pick the one as close to your vision as possible.
I also would think twice before voting for someone who agrees with me 100%...because WHO AM I? A stupid regular guy. Not a politician who gets paid to do a good job for all of us.
Additional to voting you have to discuss your ideas with others. If no one knows that you have some good thoughts on who should be the next president and why, then what does it matter? Your vote is actually peanuts.
1: You are right that its dumb to just say "VOTE".
2: You are right the celebs playing the non-partisan card are Democrats.
3: You are right that we are not "supposed" to have a 2-party system. However, our fucked electoral system assures that we do and forever will; a remnant of The Connecticut Compromise.
4: You are wrong that you can't vote against somebody. Voting for a VIABLE alternative to an undesired candidate is the best way to avoid that candidate and his policies.
I think it stinks that you can't write in a candidate in Oklahoma. Of course, some people protested in other ways, by either not voting for either presidential candidate or by voting "for" both. The latter made a bigger statement, since it forced those ballots to be examined. Of course, I knew going in that my state was going to McCain.
Hey, thanks Oklahoma - 66% McCain/Palin - more than any other state. Maybe you guys should work on ironing out little local politics like Sally Kern before you go playing on the big stage. And yeah, I'm from Oklahoma - FAR from.
If I were American and I coudl've, I'd have voted most likely for Mike Gravel, had either the democrats or libertarian party picked him as their candidate. But I don't think there's anyone else I'd have voted for.
I think the democrats shoulda picked Gravel and the republicans Paul, both libertarians, one more centrist/moderate to left libertarian and the other a right-libertarian; that'd have been a great election, with REAL change from people representing REAL change.
Democrats want to iinsert government force into economic decision making. Republicans want to insert force into personal decision making. There is a lot of overlap in the arenas of what is personal and what is economic. They "compromise" and agree to insert government into BOTH personal and economic decision making. This pushes the country towards statism, no matter what it is called. We now have less freedom than China. Vote Libertarian, Vote Free Market and Individual Freedom.
You need to be a delegate at the next Libertarian Party convention, so that Wayne Root wins. He is the only candidate that can bring the message of Constitutional Jury rights to the masses. Only that will move America in the right direction. A vote at the LP national convention matters. Nothing else will put enlightenment values into the whitehouse, or into the public debate. You CAN vote against the system, but only if a serious libertarian with a 20 year plan is the 2012 LP nominee.
I agree with much of what you say. I helped put the libertarian Party on the ballot in 15 states, before it was corrupted. If you want to know how to change the US towards a free market system, then call or message me. Read these books first:
"Unintended Consequences" -John Ross
"The Creature From Jekyll Island" -G. Edward Griffin
I'm glad Penn released this, I never got a chance to watch this before the election, but at least 35,000 people got the chance. Our two-party system is a big let-down that, in a way, splits our ideology right down the center, with half the population clinging to still very eccentric Right wing standings on higher incomes being taxes less in the attempt to keep large business booming, and shutting out small enterprise and with the left clinging to.. well... pretty much the same shit
I hear what you're saying about how voting against someone is sometimes not linked to embracing the other person's political philosophy.
I would make an argument that you CAN vote against someone in terms of numbers and math. If you vote against someone you don't want to win - that cancels out one vote in favor of that person. Doesn't that mean you're voting against someone?
Question: Do you know if your vote becomes invalid if you only vote for one issue. Example, on my ballot, I don't vote for a presetent but I say no to prop 8.
Great video, Penn. I don't agree with everything you say, but I always respect the hell out of your opinions, and you are spot-on here. I'm glad to see some people in the entertainment industry know how to think critically. I'm still not sure whether I'm on the libertarian or liberal side of the fence - working that out is harder than I thought it would be - but I know this: voting Republicrat is NOT the way to go.
*****GREAT VID!!!!!*****I DID VOTE AGAINST Barack Obama. McCain didn't scare me, Obama did. I was voting for anyone who had the best chance of beating him. I couldn't stand his how his campaign treated Jessica Hughes and Joe the Plumber, I couldn't stand his "hate" theme, I hated his rabid braindead followers and he doesn't know about economics& that's what I care most about. If a 3rd party such as Ron Paul had any chance of winning, I would've been happy to help them win. I like RP.
Trusting that representative government does a better job at protecting minorities than the general public is just assumption. They have their interests, and, ultimately, they're voted in by the public. Really, democracy is the only way to go. For it to work though, people need to start thinking for their selves and respect other people's individual rights. I believe in people enough that I think this could happen, but until it does happen, democracy won't work.
Well, without democracy people can still make a choice. With democracy they make 1 choice and that is it. Democracy is lazy. Freedom takes responsibility and compasion.
I highly disagree. In our nation our type of democracy values the idea of the individual AGAINST the majority. When it comes to expression, and intrinsic values the minority will always have the upper hand. With politics one must use the identity of the society for that is the purpose of the government to run the society, and the means in which to do this is politics. Democracy isn't a catch all term, read the constitution.
Democracy is disempowering. Therefore don't vote. Don't vote just to vote, that way you support the fact that people can take away your freedom, in spite of the fact that they are idiots.
Benjamin Franklin spoke truth, listen to him. Ludwig von Mises spoke truth, listen to him. And your own Murray Rothbard spoke exceptional truth, listen to him, and salvage what bit of your constitution that is still left.

Penn you're an idiot. You really think they pay attention to a vote for a third party?
Obama: 65 million
McCain: 55 million
Ron Paul: 10
You really think they are going to say "Wow, 10 people voted for Ron Paul so we better listen to him."? Don't you think they are just going to simply ignore those 10 votes and declare Obama the winner?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow

I agree that celebrities don't know anything about politics, but that doesn't make them inherently stupid.
I also agree that there is an imbalance of obama supporters in that ad(even though they don't say who they're voting for).
I also agree that third party candidates are awesome. I'd vote for Ron Paul if he wasn't pro life.
However, I think that voting is above all more important than voting "for" someone. It is better to simply have people participate, and feel responsible for their leaders.
Ofcourse you can vote against. In a "two party system", you are practically forced to do so. If you don't, the other side will win. You just have to choose the lesser of two evils. It is idealistic and silly to think you can create a third major player in national politics by picking some other candidate in the voting booth.
Indeed, himish, the plurality voting system dooms us forever to a two-party arrangement, with some ideas, like ending drug prohibition, left completely out of the discussion.
The way out of this is instant-runoff voting. It would eliminate the possibility of vote splitting, allowing a non-strategic, free choice amongst a full range of candidates of all persuasions. Basically, if your first choice can't win, your vote is automatically switched to your second choice, etc... check it out.
The more I look at this election, the more I get the feeling that race is involved. There's already been an incident with 2 guys planning to assassinate Obama wearing white tuxedos. We've never had a president who was African-American (actually 5% African-American, the rest is Caucasian and Kenyan). I believe that there are some people out there that are afraid of going a new route.
the actors i the don't vote ad may be mainly democrats but you are twisting their point. Obviously when they no matter who you vote for, they just mean not to be partisan, they don't mean go out there and vote randomly. Also advocating all along the video for people not to vote against someone then saying to people that they shouldn't listen to you, this seems like covering your ass for doing the thing you are reproaching to others. in other words, a bit "bullshit".
I have much respect for You, Penn and I love "penn and teller:bullshit", but I must disagree slightly here. Not voting at all, because you don't like either candidate or voting for a third party candidate that has no chance of winning is pointless. Unfortunately we have a two party system and either Obama or McCain are going to be the next president. So it's not about loving everything a particular candidate stands for. No one is going to be ideal and tell you everything you want to hear.
As an atheist, I can honestly say that Palin scares me much more than Obama. Reverend Wright may be way out there, but he's not running for vice president. Palin is, and she is associated with a pastor who believes he can cast out witches from the congregation.
Furthermore, Palin is a creationist, which does mean she is incompetent and doesn't understand global climate change is man-made.
All of Biden's flaws, don't equate to that. Obama although christian, is not fanatical.
I Voted for Bob Barr, where's my government tit cheese?

179107199999 2 years ago
As long as there are exactly two candidates you can vote against one of them by voting for the other. Two is the only number where this is possible. One candidate doesnt give you any options, and three or more means you can relaly only vote in favor of your chocie rather than against a specific candidate. I know that i voted for Obama not because his absurdly overambitious message of hope touched my heart, but because republicans are a political disaster and needed to be out of office.
Nonsensei436 2 years ago
So you are supporting Obama by voting for him. Congragulations. You are part of the problem. You didn't vote according to who you think the best candidate was, but you voted to spite someone else. That is in my mind the best way to throw away your vote. Good job. We do have more than two candidates. You *can* vote for who you think is the best. But you didn't. You fail as an American.
AlEcyler 2 years ago
actually, your philosophy assumes that in our political system there is an honest politician whose aim isn't to screw us in some way. truth is, there are none at the national level, and it is the fault of the american people, who fail mush more than i at being americans (as if that is still something to be proud of). i chose the lesser of 2 evils, which given the fact that i am only one individual in a country full of imbeciles, is the best any of us can do now.
dartrip4 2 years ago
Bitter conservative alert.
Get it?
Nonsensei436 2 years ago
No, because I don't understand why you said he was the only other option. Please explain this to me further.
AlEcyler 2 years ago
No, I don't get it. What Penn is describing is very similar to the difference between a positive/affirmitive vote and a negative vote, aka "sincere" vs "strategic" voting. If you vote for someone becasue you sincerely believe in their message, that's sincere voting. If you're voting "against" someone (strategically trying to make sure so-and-so does NOT win), that's strategic or "sophisticated" voting. IE vote sincerely or don't vote at all because strategic voting empowers the 2 party system.
paolung 2 years ago
And yet simply voting sincerely does not disempower the two party system. The media decides how many viable candidates we are presented with, not us. No amount of sincere voting will have any effect on that. The 2 party system will be here as long as the USA exists in its current form, and as long as its here you CAN vote against.
Nonsensei436 2 years ago
I disagree.... let's look at it more closely. If people vote strategically, it could be (and probably often is) misinterpreted by the mainstream candidates as having more support than they really do. Perhaps a winning candidate would think "wow, I have a mandate from the people to do xyz!" when in reality the folks who voted "against" the other guy really didn't support the winner as much as opposed the loser. If they had voted sincerely this is much less likely to occur.
paolung 2 years ago
sorry but you CAN vote against someone.
if you hate both candidates, but hate one so significantly that you would gladly vote for the other just to hurt their chances, than that is voting against. its called choosing the lesser of two evils, and i employed that principle when i voted for john kerry, even though i still think hes an ass; at least it was a vote AGAINST bush. when you given two bowls of shit and the only difference is the smell, but you gotta have one, what choice do you have?
dartrip4 2 years ago
The the point though. You're not voting *against* someone by voting for the other guy. You are pledging your support to whoever you voted for. There are more than two bowls to chose from, there are more than two candidates. You can vote for someone who is not going to win. You can chose to not eat shit. You can chose to eat the smaller plate across the room that they don't want you to see. You just have to go get it. It's not what everyone else is eating, but why should you be forced to chose.
AlEcyler 2 years ago
Im sorry but no matter how you try to bend it, there are alot of people who vote every four years because one candidate or another terrifies them. Sarah Palin terrified me with her ridiculous aura of ineptitude, and McCain scared me with the chance he would die in office and she would become president. I did not want him to be president so i went out and voted for his opponent. I voted against him.
Nonsensei436 2 years ago
No, you voted for Obama. There *is* a difference. You could have voted for any of the other candidates or simply written in a random name. Instead you chose to vote for a candidate you didn't especially like to spite another candidate you disliked more.

This is f-ing awesome. I voted for Ron Paul by writing him in. It was a toss up for me between Rex, the guy who hangs out by the curb downtown, Ron Paul, Homer Simpson, Courage the cowardly dog, or Bob Barr. In the end I went with Ron Paul cause I thought it would make more of an impact.
kait112 2 years ago
Unfortunately, unless the individual you write in is "registered" as a write in vote in your state, then it doesn't matter who you write down - it won't be counted, and it won't have an impact. Its sad but true...
zachwiedeman 2 years ago
Well if enough people do it, it does make a slight impact, I think. Writing in "none of the above" for example. I read somewhere that Mickey Mouse gets a lot of votes. It's better than voting for either crappy media picked candidate, in my opinion.

Ron Paul isn't a religious wack job. Where did you get that from? He almost never talks about religion.

I think it stinks that you can't write in a candidate in Oklahoma. Of course, some people protested in other ways, by either not voting for either presidential candidate or by voting "for" both.

Trusting that representative government does a better job at protecting minorities than the general public is just assumption. They have their interests, and, ultimately, they're voted in by the public. Really, democracy is the only way to go. For it to work though, people need to start thinking for their selves and respect other people's individual rights. I believe in people enough that I think this could happen, but until it does happen, democracy won't work.
TheClassicalLiberal 3 years ago
Well, without democracy people can still make a choice. With democracy they make 1 choice and that is it. Democracy is lazy. Freedom takes responsibility and compasion.
AndersFriedrichsen 3 years ago
where'd you get that? william f buckley?
upabittoolate 3 years ago
I highly disagree. In our nation our type of democracy values the idea of the individual AGAINST the majority. When it comes to expression, and intrinsic values the minority will always have the upper hand. With politics one must use the identity of the society for that is the purpose of the government to run the society, and the means in which to do this is politics. Democracy isn't a catch all term, read the constitution.

Ofcourse you can vote against. In a "two party system", you are practically forced to do so. If you don't, the other side will win. You just have to choose the lesser of two evils. It is idealistic and silly to think you can create a third major player in national politics by picking some other candidate in the voting booth.
Himish 3 years ago

No one is going to be ideal and tell you everything you want to hear.

to continue:
As an atheist, I can honestly say that Palin scares me much more than Obama. Reverend Wright may be way out there, but he's not running for vice president. Palin is, and she is associated with a pastor who believes he can cast out witches from the congregation.
Furthermore, Palin is a creationist, which does mean she is incompetent and doesn't understand global climate change is man-made.
All of Biden's flaws, don't equate to that. Obama although christian, is not fanatical.
