I am jamming on my bed at half 4 in the morning....
I dont care what anyone says they cud have sing it in Japanese and it wud have been fcukin awesome...I am a passionate 20yr old wid the soul of a old person! XD
We're fortunate to have this body of work online, when I saw them in Oakland in 2004, they could only play medleys as they were opening act for Isleys, so about the speed, I'll take this. They keep the groove throughout - nothing wrong them people!!
Got to love Verdine White (the bass player) he has more energy than a jet engne.. and never stops moving. Saw them live twice , 1999 and 2005.. still a top notch group
I love this live clip, man! I've always loved their music, and I play this one whenever I need some energy. It's no accident they've been in the business so long!
If you write a song, you personally have the right to play it how you like. They just switched the groove up a little to give it a hotter feel. I love when a band remixes a song for a tour for the sake of flavor!
That's why there are two kinds of bands . . . musician's bands and working bands! I'm in a band that plays a lot of this stuff, Let's Groove included. We've found, for whatever reason, the crowds respond better if the tempo is a little on the fast side. I can tell ya that from on the stage, the bands energy level picks up a bit too!
I was in a dark room, "let's goove tonight" was playing loud and several 70s disco negroes (glittering pyjama-clothing, soul glo' treated afro hair) were coming out of the dark, dancing towards me. I could see my equally glittering arm sleeves from ego perspective, clapping my hands and then i joined their dancing rows and we all danced into the darkness ...
I was going to say the same thing @vivicusthegreat. It's all about adrenaline and getting the crowd into it for a performace set. They've already gotten the crowd from the record. They know the people love the song, so they speed it up and just vibe off of each other and the crowd.
Awesome musicians, great song, but from a musician's perspective, I will never understand why even good bands like this one end up speeding songs up, when playing them live. The studio version of "Let's Groove" is nowhere nearly as fast as this one.
When you speed up, It kills the musicality of the songs, everything sounds rushed, you don't have enough time to breathe and give a little bit of interpretation to the vocals, and the same goes also for all the instruments.
@vampiroangelico IMO in live concerts, besides watching/hearing them live, you expect musical arrangements other than what is on the records.. otherwise it would definitely be boring, on both parties.. yes?
increasing or decreasing the tempo (arrangement) of a song depends on a lot of factors and often arbitiary, but as long it's not fluctuating.. then It's not killing any musical capacity. just my 2cents
@vampiroangelico its purely because they are a funk band and live they can give more an exiting energy filled performance than on record i think it sounds FUNKY !!!!
@vampiroangelico When performing live you only have one shot, and they're all human. They're all affected by their adrenaline which tends to speed the song up. And if it starts fast, it'll stay fast. Still sounds great in my opinion.
@VivicusTheGreat I agree with you there. Plus if you compare different Earth, Wind & Fire live performances, the songs are always done differently. In a sense, they are the kings of remixing. They are simply amazing!!!
@vampiroangelico They're playing this to the audience not a bunch of youtubers. I guarantee you if you were in the crowd feeding off of their energy, you'd love the hell out of this song at this tempo.
@need4mospd So true. I also think they know they're speeding it up. It's not like they're ignorant to it. Speeding a song up gives it much more energy.
@vampiroangelico Also when your on tour and have played the song 1000 times in 20 different countries, you wanna get out of the rut and improvise and/or experiment with different tempi and arrangements. That is why when a band is going in the studio to record they try them out on the road. That way the songs are "broken into" and when in the studio you have a better perspective of the songs. And of course being musicians we are human and not machines and once in while we have on "OFF" night.
@vampiroangelico Sometimes you do end up killing the groove, but with groups like this that isn't the case. The band is playing a gig and recording a movie. I believe they speed up the songs for a couple reasons: #1) To be able to fit more material in the recording, and #2) When playing a live gig, you'll get the crowd more into it with a high-energy set. Speeding up the tempo and making the rhythm section a little "busier" can change the energy of a song. Easier to dance to.
I LOVE EW&F...my fav band of all time...but, Verdine White is NOT the best BASS (not base) player ever...that distinction would go to Larry Graham of Sly & the Family Stone\Graham Central Station or Louis Johnson of teh Brothers Johnson. If u don know who they are, u better ask somebody!
Congratulation sir you have won "The Biggest Douche of The Universe" award.
"Here he is, the Biggest Douche of the Universe! In all the galaxies, there's no bigger douche than you! You've reached the top, the pinnacle of douchedom! Good going, douche. Your dreams have come true! "
I love EWF, but why did Maurice always make Phiplip Bailey be in the background. Clearly the band would have never been the same without his voice. It's almost an embarssment how he was treated despite his contributions.
@timothybsigler I agree, but if you watch the rest of the concert you will notice on several occasions where Phillip Bailey had the spotlight while Maurice sat back on the drum kit as well. Wach "Reasons" and "Fantasy" from the same concert, you'll notice Maurice isn't even on the main stage hes back where the small drum kit is.
Maybe I'm wrong, but it would seem that Maurice felt some competition as the band's leader.
