One of my favorites. You get to really see Kerry Livgren's contribution to the band here as both keyboardist and guitarist. He also wrote most of the lyrics. Livgren is in an upcoming film called "The Imposter" where he redoes "Dust in the Wind". Kerry is also recovering from a stroke.
They were tight and sounded great here. Steve's hits high notes effortlessly, it was a kick ass version. I wish a better quality production version was posted.
This is from a T.V. show called Don Kirshners Rock Concert. Kansas appeared on this show in 1974 and in 1975! This is from the 1975 performance and is one of the finest live recordings of this song that I have seen!
You're welcome! We are so lucky that so many people choose to share all this excellent Kansas material with us here on the tube! I think we're also lucky that so many shows were recorded in one form or another! Keep Rockin' in Britain my friend!
First it's a damn shame that we don't have bands like this anymore. Second we don't have shows like the one's you mentioned and of course this one! Finally don't you think it would be cool if they brought back these performances on cable somewhere? Like a VH1 type channel that just plays all the old shows like this! I know I would subscribe!
If you haven't already seen it search "Kansas-Down The Road(live)" for another song from the same show that you'll only see on you-tube!It's got a cool intro by Don Kirshner and although the video is rough (VHS tape) it's another kick ass performance! There are a couple more from this show here on you-tube but you can get those on the 30th anniv. box set!
I remember watching "Mayhem" and the whole "Don Kirshner's Rock Concert" way back when. Thank you and God bless the great Kansas. This is them at their best.
Wow, what a great performance. Unbelievably tight. This was back when they were hungry and hadn't hit it big yet, and the energy level is obvious. Thanks for posting this!
I used to argue with my parents so I could stay up and watch Don Kirschner's show...lol...

Back in the day when Kansas had some balls and not worried about the almighty dollar.

This is song kills me. It's at a breakneck speed. Grabs you by the throat. Kansas is a band of really great musicians.
I love them...always! Go Kerry! Put these guys in the rock HOF asap!

This is the Kansas I grew up with (was 14 at the time this came out), the harder-edged groove with Kerry's riffs right in your face.
Phil's drumming, as always, is so f-in' tight live!

I remember staying up to watch In Concert (the predecessor) every week, waiting to see what would blow me away.
Then, of course, there was the King Biscuit Flower Hour....

In a heartbeat, I'd subscribe!
MTV probably wouldn't even consider it, given those that watch it today wouldn't tune in...

Are you sure this is Steve Walsh?

I think Steve was ill that night, so they got Barry Manilow to fill in for him on this performance. *grin*
But seriously ... of course it's Steve. Who else would it be? :-)
