Btw: AMAZING. The best version I have seen. Both their voices are BEAUTIFUL. They sounds like angels. Whether its the original or not, its the best out there.
Ye Gods, what pretension! They sing it very well, and yes the voice is warm and lovely, and the countertenor is a delight, which is alot from me as it is a category that usually makes me wince from most of the ones I hear these days..
This is still my favorite version of this song, historically informed or not. There is a warmth and depth in her voice that I fail to hear in many of these "purist" versions. Other than Rial and Jarrousky, I think this is a very romantic interpretation.

horrific at this speed... what were they trying to achieve?? They have ruined the raw emotionally power that you can portray by the slower tempo. A disaster.
It's a perfectly lovely recording - I think the people who criticize this are just doing the de rigueur bashing of crossover artists. She sings in tune and uses the same kinds of embellishments and phrasing conventions that many of the more romantic interpreters do, and I appreciate the up tempo here, all too often pur ti mio is sung like a dirge.
I don't like the orchestration here and the whole mantovani strings approach, but the singing is lovely. Small voice, but well registered.
@leone959 Vero.....Brutta pecca, però la cacofonia che creano con le due note sovrapposte é piacevole, ma sono d'accordo che dopo avrebbero dovuto sovrapporre le voci.
This the the kind of comment that shows a chip on the shoulder. I agree that this other version is also beautiful but to claim that Natasha and Fernando are dedicated to themselves not Monteverdi is rubbish. The video above has been put together by a fan and has nothing to do with them. Forget looks and prejudice people, shut your eyes and listen PLEASE!
I claimed I'm not an expert, but still even if someone decides to listen to Natasha's version of purt ti miro it is still better than listening to rubish-type-of -music lkie hip hop or disco. And, besides, we cannot blame Natasha for looking good.
By the way, to have the opinion of some people better versed in opera music, how about Fernando Lima ? We are torturing Nathasha with snappy comments, and Fernando ?
Frankly, I think the point of this is that she is lying about in sexy poses, and the music is secondary. Although the relationship between Nerone and Poppea is about exploiting sexuality,..so why don't we see the Nerone as well? Also I agree with Fingalcrom about 'snobbery'. If these people were using their looks to promote the MUSIC it wouldn't be so bad......
Both Natasha Marsh and Katherine Jenkins trained at London conservatoires. Each realised they didn't have the voice for a world-class opera career but what they did have was good looks. Record companies today know an artist has to have a gimmick - being blind, humble background, extreme youth or indeed ravishing good looks. Talent is secondary as recording engineers can work marvels! Selling a classical CD is more than just the voice it's selling the whole package just like a pop disc.
In the past classical CDs were sold because of the vocal talent of the artist. Clearly no more. Just as there are fewer people who know what great dance, literature or art is, there are even less who know the difference between merely good and great singing. Record companies have capitalised on this selling inferior, less costly products in pretty wrappings for greater yield. The marketing bandwagon behind these 'artists' persuades the public they are getting the genuine article. They are not!
Having had the extreme good fortune of hearing incredible singers like Sarah Connolly, Kiri te Kanawa, Danielle de Niese and Renee Fleming live many times I can tell you they are pure talents, need no mikes or gimmicks and can sang whatever the like to as what ever they will sing would come from years of hard work, pure talent and passion - and they show this talent on the opera and concert stages night after night - not on occassional talk shows - brava to them!
If I hear the word snobbery one more time I will scream!!!!!!!!!! It is not snobbery not to like performers like KJ, Watson, Marsh and Boccelli. As I have said in the past, don't sell me Ikea and tell me it's Chippendale!
It takes a lot of work, commitment and talent to be a professional opera singer - a REAL opera singer. Real opera singers don't have a microphone thrust half way down their throat, have pieces put down a minor third and crafty engineering.
YES! And Natasha spent 6 years training at the Royal College of Music on a Scholarship (unlike KJ undertaking 1 year) followed by joining the prestigious IMG ARTISTS as her agent and singing lead roles as she began her 'Proper' Operatic (no microphone, no so called' tricks') Opera North, WNO, Glyndebourne etc. Please don't put every crossover singer in the same box. That is inverted snobbery! The fact that Natasha moved onto the commercial world doesn't make her a lesser artist!
Is the duet meant to be double the normal speed or is there a problem with my computer?
And one last thing........without meaning to sound bitchy then I have to seriously question the credibility of anyone who lists Andrea Bocelli as a "great" opera singer, alongside Domingo, Carreras and Terfel. Or was that intended as a joke? If so it was a very good one but perhaps you should throw Russell Watson in too :-)
I heard Natasha Marsh live at the Classical Brits a couple of years ago and can't say I was desperately impressed with her voice. It may be pretty on a very superficial level but otherwise I find it bland, lacking in tonal colour and somewhat on the thin side
Mind you, at least she doesn't have a wobble big enough to drive a sports utility vehicle through, like Miss Katherine Jenkins
I talked about snobbery in another post. I associate snobbery with Kiri Te Kanawa, who took a swipe at crossover artists about a year ago. For the sake of money she agreed to perform the Flower Duet with Katherine Jenkins on one of Katjerine's recent CDs, whereas Katherine seemed to well fall within the crossover set Kiri seemed to deplore.
I asscoiate snobbery with Anna Netrebko, who put down Katherine in quite disgusting terms.
I associate snobbery with the fans of Renée Fleming, who put down Anna Netrebko for dumbing down Classical music when Anna dared to perform Song to the Moon form Dvorak's Rusalka. (I agreed with them that Renée did a much better job of that song - I despised the way they responded to Anna Netrbeko for performing that song, just as I despise the way Netrebko talked about Katherine.
Please, allow other artists to do their thing without putting them down.
LaMagnifica, I am staggered that you should stoop so low as to get one of your friends (rosalba) to stand up in defence of you. That's it. And there's one more thing. On Youtube the voice is flattened and the judgement is difficult to make.
If she wants to earn some money why not ? She is worth it. Again, think of some rubbish type of music and how much pop stars are paid.
I souppose that any categoric judgement is always subjective.
