Yes Chaka and Joyce both recorded it and I do prefer Joyce's version. Interestingly enough, the song is written by Carole Bayer Sager and Burt Baccarach. Carole's version is interesting. It would be fascinating if these three ladies cut a new version together.
joyce kennedy kill this shit what chaka is chaka but this girl made you know what the fuckin song was!!!!!!!!!! i had to put this classic on my mp3 she did the damn thing with this whatttttt!!!!!!!!!
I heard them both. Joyce has no equal with this song, as her version had more soul, more inspiration, and more explored the vocal range a little better. I'm not saying she's a better singer than Chaka, but she did this song better.
I seem to recall Joyce's version being released like a week before Chaka's--& radio stopped playing Joyce's take to play Chaka's; which then sank Joyce's version. Record companies used to do this kinda move all the time back then ;by having a bigger seller cover a song immediaterly rather than later to eclipse the version by the lesser-known singer. It was really a cut-throat, money game back then, like now!
Look people. I like Joyce Kennedy, but there is no way on Gods green earth that she "out sang" Chaka Khan on this. Chaka ripped this version to shreds live. And reggie44, my man apparently you haven't seen heard Chaka lately. Her voice is better at highs than ever before.

Chaka is my fave singer but the truth is the light-Joyce Out Chak'd Chaka on this!!! I had that album soon as it came out cuz I was a big MF & Joyce Kennedy fan too!!! If you gave good Chaka I bought your ish!!! Chaka's version is garbage to me!!! I hold her to higher standards than I do other singers & just did not deliver on this!!! I know she had Warner Bros. issues making her tone her ish down to cross over but.... she needs to re-record this to redeem herself!!! LOL!!!
@TyjaluvsChaka ok Tyja Joyce's studio version is pretty good, but this live version doesn't compare to Chaka's live renditions lol. Chaka is fire personified for a reason and her live performances of this song in 85' and 90' are proof of that.
@TheCmelmoneyman I heard both of them when they first came out!!! I understand Chaka had to give it a pop tratmeant which basically means a 'Whitewash" in order to keep thar contract with Warner Bros.I just love this version!!!
The versions done by the other legendary singers hold their own definitely, but Ms. Kennedy kicks it up a notch...she makes you wanna run out and get that man! Strong voice...strong jam. Best version yet, in my opinion. Old school forever!
C'mon now... Joyce Kennedy is the real deal. And I wish Mother's Finest would come to Chicago. Oh, and not to forget Joyce is fine and has an awesome voice!!!
you do realize that chaka and joyce are blood cousins

Joyce's version of this song is the best, it's all in the interpretation and she put just the right amount of power in the song all through.

Chaka's voice has broken down over the years, due to some of her bad habits. However, Joyce can sing this today in the same key without a problem.

@uptownbronze You are right. Joyce Kennedy nailed it. It is like the song was made for her, with respect to the other two Divas you mentioned.
