All those influential figures who go on camera to preach 'it will get better' aren't saying that life will spontaneously improve because high school has ended. They're saying that once the barriers put in place by high school and other institutions in life have been removed, that's the time to start making the changes in ones life that we weren't able to make before.
Its a time to begin finding oneself, to choose where we want to go and who we want to interact with on the way.
Its good to see someone being the devils advocate to the 'It Get's Better' campaign who is not just a homophobic bible basher. While I agree to an extent with what you're saying, that life is only what you make it, I think that's essentially what the 'It Get's Better' campaign is trying to get across as well.

My brother is gay, all through highschool he was bullied.
He made good grades, was in every sport, and a all around good kid.
