  • I'll play this song to everybody i know, all my friends.... I i hear from just one of them, JUST ONE, that this song is not good, ill stop being friends with that person for the rest of my live!!

  • Damn... I just discovered him now

    Rest in Peace man

  • What a shame to lose such a beautiful talent.

  • RIP

  • I first saw Bert at the Ashgrove in Los Angeles on a bill with Odetta. His presence and command of his instrument was astonishing. Everyone in the house was blown away. I really believe Bert was channeling a musical force that went outside the ages. Hard to describe a talent like his without getting a bit outside the box. Singular in every way. Thanks Bert, for everything.,

  • Having discovered Bert in the first week at college, I spent most of that first year listening to this LP and of course learning Angie. It was magic to my ears. Not good for my academic career but it did define the path I have subsequently trodden. Thanks Bert, from a guy in the crowd at the back of the hall.

  • I saw Bert in 1978 at the Main Point, Bryn Mawr Pa with a new girlfriend karen. It was our first date. He opened for Ralph McTell. I'm glad for that girl because I got to see Bert and Ralph in that tiny little coffee shop venue up close and personal.

  • Just watched his BBC concert from 2004, brings back the memories from mid-sixties, Les Cousins, Chelsea college.... Bert you were the man! RIP your musicianship will shine forever...........

  • This song get me into guitar! :D

  • Sorry he has gone.

  • Just fantastic. An inimitable player.

  • Noel Gallagher sent me here

  • Bert has left us. Whence comes such another!

  • @SpaghettiZoSo Of course its down to personal preference, but i think that your just blurting out hate here.We should appreciate all types of genres, as they have so much to give us in so many individual ways.Maybe if you researched into the history of Nirvana you would then understand their music! Peace to all <3

  • oi paghob knock it on the head mate bert was certainly a top guitarist and, although i never knew him probably a top geezer to booy but, hes dead and aint very likely to read your rather grovelly 'sleeve' note is he now?try listening and then maybe writing to someone alive...say erm..sam cook for instance.happy listening and i love your love anyway.

  • @franciswilliam63 get it rite up you ! prik !!!you know nothing

  • @franciswilliam63 francis fannybaws !!

  • Change the video information! This song is by Davey Graham!

  • Rucking Brilliant. I saw Bert Yansch play in our student theatre at Ealing Art College, London, UK in I think 1966...............I was amazad one man could do that and became an immediate appostle. Even though it took me 3 years to learn to ply Angie poperly I was determined to do so, and did. What a wonderful man and guitarist. BTW, sitting next to me in the theatre was my friend Fred Bulsara........later to become Freddie Mercury of Queen. Those were magic days.

  • Not to disparage Jansch's brilliance in any way, but Davy Graham wrote "Angie" - even the credits on the original pressings of the Simon &. Garfunkel LP version were wrong. =a=

  • Rip Mosieur Jansch. (Good Music will Prevail)

  • didnt simon and garfunkle do this?

  • @MichaelHansenFUN It was written by Davy Graham, and rearranged by Bert Jansch, and subsequently Paul Simon.

  • Purely amazing music.

  • 1233 people love BJ

  • RIP Such a great guitarist who influenced Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin III)

  • Death is lifes' way of getting rid of the old and making way for the new. Most of us will pass on without so much as a ripple. Some will leave part of their soul behind as a gift to inspire those that follow. Jansch was one . RIP!

  • @davepenman1 hey dave

    couldnt have said it better

    thanks

  • Oh my word. I grew up witih Hendrix, Jims Morrison and Page, Neil Young, and never heard this guy (I probably did but didn't know it). RIP. Thanks NYT for the writeup.

  • go your way my love....

    RIP master...

  • RIP

  • R.I.P. Bert Jansch -- if not for this type of guitar playing, Steve Howe might not have been able to do "The Clap".

  • how very sad, my inspirational guitarist, thank goodness he recorded as much as he did, so that many in future can discover Bert, and can also share and enjoy his guitar style and music, i was impressed from when he started, and have always enjoyed his work ever since, through his recordings and concerts he was my distant tutor, and so I will always be grateful for his influence, and, although unknowingly ..what he taught me. RIP Bert.. and thank you for your music.

  • @highwayman1700 These words seem to come right out of you heart and realy moved me. You are a lucky man being able to cherish so many beautiful memories and being influenced by such a fantastic musician.

  • Never saw him as a solo artiste, only with Pentangle. One of the Greats - any list of 100 Top British musicians, of any genre, has him well up in the top half.

  • Along with Davy Graham, Bert Jansch changed the sound of the acoustic guitar. He was a special musician and great songwriter. I am greatly saddened by his passing. "I see your face in every place I'll be going, I read your words like black hungry birds, read every sowing ( Jackson C. Frank)

  • "Unless you can play this you cannot play guitar" Quote from the 60s - I think I agree! RIP Bert Jansch. Loved your music & loved Angie!!

  • Saw him live in the spring opening for Neil Young. Glad I got the chance to see this wonderful artist before he passed. He will be missed.

  • Noel Gallagher send me here

  • The one and only Bert Jansch.Such a great influence.

  • Bert you were important in my life in the 60s -= you brought me into guitar - we all loved you.

  • Without him, no Zeppelin's style ( Folk - Rock ), one my favorite guitarist, it's so sad :'(.

  • Saw him live in Brooklyn last year. He was utterly hynotizing. Time seemed to drop away when he played. Just remarkable. RIP.

  • Rest In Peace Bert... Legend...

  • Weird, spellbinding style he had, magic.

  • Pouring out some liquor for ol' Bert.

  • @BlackSabbathory I'm pouring out some liquor for ol' Bert too mate. Only just learned today. Thanks Bert, you have touched me with your music, and now with your passing. Your music however, is staying firmly where you left it. That can not be taken away from us! Thanks Bert.x

  • RIP nigz

  • saw him play a coupla years ago.. man! what a talent. RIP.

  • What a Man, what a talent!

Lucky enough to see him twice - once in Edinburgh and once at Cambridge.

His name will live on - and his reputation will grow even taller.

A sad time indeed for music.

  • Mr Jansch RIP. THERE IS NOBODY GREATER IN YOUR GENRE SIR - NOBODY!!!! Thank you for all the happiness you have given so many through your music. You gave definition to the English Folk Male Voice. Here is a measure of your greatness. You influenced Jimmy Page, but he not you!!!!

  • R.I.P. Bert Jansch

  • THIS is the song that made them stand in line in georgetown for the cellar door all the way down the block....selling out for a folk artist those days will never come again. Thanks Bert it was great to meet you....peacock feathers and incense for everyone and God bless your gypsy soul....you lived it. and taught the folk and jazz tradition..no one could spin a song and write a new ballad with that style like you did. peace out.

  • RIP

  • Rip bert .

  • RIP Bert... You were a genius.

  • RIP - probably the most influential guitarist of his era and genre

  • "What Jimi Hendrix was to the electric guitar, Bert Jansch was to the acoustic guitar" RIP

  • @iamimmy42 you haven't seen paco de lucia then :P

  • @drmirandaxiv Oh st, Bert is the best!

  • RIP, we miss you a lot!

  • I only saw him once. It was last year when he toured with Neil young. All the drunken young fans screamed and booed calling for Neil. I wasn't there for Neil Young, I was there for Bert, the unassuming opener who played under 10 songs. RIP Mr. Jansch, You changed the way i thought about my instrument. You changed the way i thought about life. I idolized you. i still do. thank you.

  • Thumbs up if you need to thank Fleet Foxes for finding this guy...sadly a little too late.

  • Seen him several times in the last few years...totally miserable that he passed away

  • Bert, repose en paix :(

Une vraie légende de la guitare s'est éteinte. Ce jour est noir dans mon coeur.

  • R.I.P. Bert Jansch......what a talent.........

  • May he rest in peace.

    great music!

  • such a sad day this man is the reason myself and many others picked up a guitar in the first place.i had the pleasure of meeting this man twice both times i found him to be so down to earth in a music world where image is everything bert was a million miles away from all that im sure his music will live on but im sure that is little comfort to his family at the moment rest in peace bert

  • RIP good sir. I take great pleasure in being able to say I was one of very few 13 year olds to share a curry with you a few years back. Your legend and legacy will most surely live on, in either the memory of us, or in the music of countless guitarists you have inspired! x

  • R.I.P A Guitar Hero!

  • Thanks for the music Bert. *salutes*

  • RIP. Thanks for your song and guitar sound.

  • RIP. My guitar holds my respects for you.

  • RIP

Remember being entertained and awed by Bert in the late 1960s.

  • Blessings to your soul, Mr. Jansch, for your gentle presence and the incredible music you made. Your sounds filled many lives with subtlety and beauty.

  • Rest in Peace.

  • Today is a dark day for acoustic guitarists :(

  • RIP Bert my good man! Bumped into him in Manhattan 4 years ago or so, the night before his amazing gig at the South Paw in Brooklyn, what a nice unassuming bloke, asked him if he minded the fact that I'd put guitar transcriptions of his songs all over the net (without permission!) and he just shook his head and said he didn't mind.

  • R.I.P.

  • Thanks to Neil and Pegi Young and their deep love and respect for this man, a lot of people over here got to experience Bert's music the last 2 years. To be listening to Bert play live was as good as life gets for some of us. His heart and talent was pure gold. Go with God, Bert. We'll see you in a few...

  • RIP :-(

  • you can sing hit the road jack to this

  • Requiescat In Pace dear Bert.

  • RIP Mr Jansch...

  • a great great loss for music RIP Bert Jansch

  • sad news, the Hendrix of acoustic. RIP.

  • Devastating news....the finest guitarist. R.I.P.

  • ultimate respect i was lucky to see him play once 15 years ago in dulwich, he played this as the last song and modestly introduced it by saying that he was still learning how to play it.

  • There is no better version of this tune: the first time I heard this I thought two people were playing! RIP, Bert - you were the greatest.

  • RIP Bert Jansch.

  • Gutted to hear the sad news :-(

Bert has and will always be an inspiration on many a musician. His music will live on.

  • It's so strange...not long been aware of him, but this past half a year or so I've just been completely obsessing over his music and beautiful guitar playing. His influence is already so perceptible in my playing...as well as many other guitarists I love.

To find out he's passed...........I'm just so grateful I found his music, even if I never got the chance to see him play these wonderful songs live. The word 'Genius' does not do justice to this man.

Thanks Bert, for leaving us this music.

  • we have lost one of the greatest acoustic guitarists of all time....R.I.P Bert.

  • RIP

  • R.I.P

  • R.I.P

  • RIP Bert Jansch - you will be sorely missed.

  • Wicked quotation of Nat Adderly's "Work Song"!

  • @candorist Two weeks after just starting? If so that's pretty incredible, if you played it like the original.

  • Thanks to Mr Jansch I'm into my music college course! Thank you kind sir (I played this at the audition) <3

  • @candorist Yeah, I've read about that when I discovered him as one of his influences. I think Road is a great example of Janch's inspiration.

  • I saw Bert open up for Neil Young at the Fox Theatre in Detroit and it was just wonderful... I hope I get the chance to see him play again.... love the feel of this songg

  • Graham wrote the tune. Bert did his rendition and blew people away. At the time his style was completely new and innovative. Paul Simon was heavily influenced by Bert's version. On Jimmy Pages Blackmountainside (?) closely emulates Jansch's version of Blackwaterside and acknowledges him as an inspiration. Many others cite Jansch as a great influence, including Neil Young, who had Jansch touring with him recently.

  • this is obviously a good version , but my favourite is the version by paul simon on sounds of silence.

  • I think I found my favorite folk guitarist next to Nick drake.

  • people saying this was stolen in folk its common to take others work withoout crediting them

  • Quite simply my favourite guitar piece, rockrzk2 it was bert first who inspired Nick drake

  • The change at 0:43 is unbelievable. Holy shit thank god I found this tune. I'm now going to try to learn it. Class!!!!!

  • I love this song, even Paul's copy.

  • the bends he does are very much like nick drakes however i dont know which came first

  • i just love this song

  • Beautiful Beautiful Beautiful!

    Beautiful!

  • jesus this is good

  • Where's the repeat button?

  • #94 greatest guirtarist of all time

  • this is nick drake - smoking too long

  • @wmwhite1 Smoking too Long (originally by Robin Frederick) and Angie are both based on a descending minor chord series (i.e. Am, Am/G, Am/F#, E) which is why they sound similar but quite a lot of songs use it; Feelin' good by Nina Simone and Ice Cream Man by Tom Waits for example.

Angie isn't Smoking too Long and none of the other songs using the chord transition are; every one is its own unique song.. it's not what chords they use, it's what they can do with them :D

  • @ediblesponge great analysis, a man who clearly knows his stuff
