I will miss Ian White, but to be blunt I hardly think trading White and essentially replacing him with Dion Phaneuf is a bad deal (despite the rest we gave away). Toskala for Gigeure is daylight robbery without Blake going too though I actually liked Blake. Toskala despite how people love to beat up on the poor guy is actually damn good goalie AT TIMES. Tahts the trouble he always had, consistency. With Gigeuer I think we will finally get that again :)

the only reasons why raycroft is playing better now than when he was on leafs was because they had crappy goalie coaches and raycroft was only around 25 years old, that's still fairly young. you can still have developement on a 25 yr old but not a 33 yr old like toskala.

First of all Giguere is a mess. Slightly less than Toskala. But they moved blake. So good move. "Giggy" will either continue to suck horrible, or do well knowing that he doesnt have the expectation to succeed. Ducks are happy hes gone.

Phaneuf is a significant addition. Though his game has slipped for 2 years & his defensive game has never been that good.

i dont think anyone is gonna be upset to see toskela go, i mean when you can get rid of the worst goalie in the league for a half decent one its good. so they lost jason blake, he was over payed and he really didnt do his job all that well. he did play hard all the time, but as in terms of numbers, not that impressive. the leafs are putting a lot of faith behind the blue line. Hopefully giguere can mentor the monster a little as he is still their future.

lol i love how everyone hates blake, hes actually a good player, to bad however that when ever he gets the puck all the way into the oppositions end, all of his teammates are still taking their sweet ass time getting to where he is. But either way he is still tradeable, considering the leafs could do nothing for him. Toskala on the other hand was a very smart trade, he can be good sometimes, but he very unreliable. Its almost like a soccer net is behind him, except even soccer goalies stop more.

I really like this trade, feels like a burden off their shoulders to trade Blake. And Giguere is a better bet than Toskala. Our D has been absolutely awful this season so with Phaneuf, Kaberle, Giguere, Gustavsson, Schenn, etc...it's definitely an improvement.

I'm fuckin ECSTATIC!!! JS Giguere...man, that guy was my favourite goalie way back when...he won me over when he carried Anaheim to the Cup Finals in 2003, and again in '07 when they beat the Sens to win the cup. At 32 he's still capable of playing near that level and he wants to prove himself. I LOVE this deal. He's the Leafs first all-star goalie since 2004. That feels like AGES ago.

We don't need offence as much as we need to shore up our D, we have near a goal differential between goals for and goals against despite us not being a bad offensive team. Since the lockout we have been one of the absolute worst teams in the NHL defensively and I believe this helps. This year it probably wont make much of a difference to us (although Im sure boston fans are cursing right now) , but phaneuf and Giguere will have an impact next year.
