  • Shalom my Name is stephen I am a jewish man who have two son but my wife died 6 years ago Iam now becoming more relgus and wish to keep Shabbat correct should I kindla the shabbat since I am the only person in the house I know usly weman do this in the house hold

  • Thank you for your interesting question.

I am sorry to hear about the loss of your dear wife.

Both men and women are obligated to light Shabbat candles - and therefore you must also light.

However, the way in which men and women light is different. Since a man does not, as a matter of course, accept the obligations of Shabbat by kindling the lights, you should proceed as follows:

First strike the match. Then recite the blessing. Then kindle the lights.

    To be continued...

  • (part 2)

By the way, if you are interested in trying out one-on-one Jewish learning, I would be happy to arrange this for you. Any subject can be learned, by phone or in person, at a time that's good for you.

This service is absolutely free. Just write back and I'll work on arranging a suitable situation for you.

I hope this is helpful. With blessings for success,

    Rabbi Shraga Simmons
