Thank you very much for posting it! I had always heard about Montgomery Clift and Judy Garland's perfomances in this film. Finally, I could see his brilliant scene. I always admired Monty but I had never seen this movie before. Now I'm going to watch it.
Monty was brilliant - better than Brando and James Dean. Unfortunately, after his accident, there were only a few glimpses of his talent such as this scene, which he refused payment for as it was only a cameo. Spencer Tracy thought it was magnificent until Monty showed up at the premiere drunk out of his head, crawling on his hands and knees and attempting to jump on Tracy's back. What a wasted talent.
Much as I like "West Side Story," Clift's losing to George Chakiris is the biggest robbery since Brink's.
Monty Clift gave, perhaps, his own best epitaph when he said "What in hell have I got to do to prove I can act?!" And it's said that he nailed this scene, in one take, having just come off a week-long bender. If so, it adds that much more poigniency to his brief, brilliant performance.
@librarybob1958 I agree. Chakiris may be swell, but Monty was genius. And he didn't win any awards- like Garbo, Chaplin , Natalie Wood and Ian Bannen.
One of the best 10-minute pieces of acting, ever!

it's good acting because his lines weren't memorized and he was making it up as he went along
