@klaabu99 Or for defending. First off, the USSR was obsessed with the threat of invasion for years, and the only place it could come from was Europe, not from the far North or Kazachstan. Second, most population and industry was concentrated there. And third, the dominant vision of the coming war was one where the invaders would be beaten at the borders and expelled back. (One that proved to be very stupid but that's not the point here). That's why the tanks were in the West. Silly you indeed.

these were attack forces .. on june 22 there was biggest tankbattle in history .. but soviet historians preferred not talk about it .. USSR had like 3 times more tanks and light tanks then germany... question is not why they were on that border ... but why did USSR needed so many tanks .. and armies were at that border because their bases were planned there .. and it was close to poland after war in poland

@klaabu99 The tanks were there because the Soviet Union was obsessed with war and preparing for it. However that doesn't mean they were planning to attack Germany. They thought they were going to be attacked and they were right.

And I don't think the biggest tank battle was on June 22 1941. The Russians were caught in their underwear so to speak. Stalin denied the reality of invasion as long as he could.

yes there was biggest tankbattle of WW2 on 22 june ... and red army never trained for defenses ... only attacking ... thats why their losses were so huge .. there were many counterattacks and all of them failed thats why red army losses were so huge .. basicly whole armies were destroyed ... and new ones formed couple days later
