1956 In Cloverdale Cal wasnt alowed to listen to the radio but was walking to the store and heard this from a car was amazed it sounded twice as rockin that it does now but sure changed my life
@tommieparch Two completely different interpretations! Black Oak was joking around ,mocking Jim for looking for some girl but Lavern Baker was dead serious -- keeps pushing Jim to go find the girl if she meant that much to him....Best thing about music --there is no right or wrong,,we feel what we feel and that's good enough for me.
This woman had white people listening and dancing to her music when Aretha Franklin had never been heard of. It pisses me off that Laverne never got the recognition she deserved for her contribution to rock and roll.
Boy, this is a real good one. I"m glad that Blak Oak Arkansaw (if I'm correct on this) re-did this song, but I'll stick with the Lavern Baker version. At any rate, I gotta say "I dig this song", and hope you do too. Marc.
I love this song! Still hear it sometimes on oldies stations.I still have 2 old radios that it would have been heard on originally: a ca.1950 Grundig-Majestic floor model radio, and the old AM radio in my 1956 Pontiac .
@nadirachase --All the records I've posted are from my collection... We started collecting 35 years ago ,around 2500 45's so far but always looking for more.
I saw Laverne sing this song at a rock and roll concert at Memorial Auditorium in Atlanta in 1956. She put on one helluva show. I will never forget it. All the greats were there, Little Richard, Fats Domino, The Platters, etc., but the one that stands out in my mind was Lovely Laverne.
@beastiez1 That's quite a roster of stars beastiez. Some of the greatest talent of the 20th century and you were there.I'm sure you treasure the memory.
Haha.. so happy to have found this tune.. it's not the greatest technical or musical or produced piece of rock'n'roll but the lyrics and singing rock! Go Jim Dandy, Go Jim Dandy! He's better than Superman any day..
Boy, this is the real deal!!!! I love this version. I heard this song in the grocery store this morning and I couldn't stop smiling. I almost wanted to start dancing. That's what it did to me. Thanks Lavern, for a great little tune! Marc Trainor.
When I was in junior high this was played at every dance and house party. Kids loved to jitterbug to this jumpin' hit. It's an incredibly danceable song. I introduced my neighbor to dancing with this beloved record. Her mother royally flipped out and angrily told me to never bring "that kind of music" into her household....Whew, was she angry. To this day I LOVE this song with its toe-tapping beat.
Was watching some of Edarems videos... Heard him singing this.
He died yesterday I think... R.I.P Ed
