I love the sound you have with the MB Studio 22+ and the Eminence Red Fang. I've got a Studio 22+ with a vintage 30 but I see that someone local has a Red Fang up for sale. I may inquire about that based on what I heard from you.
Woah, you got one too!? I had a Vintage 30 in mine as well - horrible. It had no sweetness; had plenty of metal/rock chug, but the speaker really killed the true character of the amp. And use Electro-Harmonix EL84 power tubes; I tested 10 different brands (Tungsol, Sovtek, JJ, GT...) and Electro Harmonix are best suited for it. And JJ tubes for preamp. Red Fang is an amazing speaker for .22+, makes it come alive, especially for Santana style lead - smooth and very punchy. Hope you like it.
I'm concerned it might be too bright for my taste. I have never heard one live, only youtube clips. I've done a lot of reading, I'm interested to know what an alnico magnet speaker sounds like. I'm ready to go for it but I'm hesitant. I haven't made up my mind yet...
Bright? The Eminence is actually a very DARK/warm speaker, I was concerned it might be too dark for a Mesa (which is already a very warm sounding amp). The Black Shadow (original speaker) was fizzy and harsh and Eminence really turned the distortion fizz into smooth overdrive. Vintage 30 is dark and punchy too, but it eats up the mids that the Mesa is famous for (which is the reason why anyone buys a Mesa - sweet & smooth mids). I had a Greenback in it too and it emphasized the mids too much :(
Your description sounds delicious. I'm going to make arrangements to have a look at the speaker if it doesn't sell on me. I've already been reading on the Celestion Alnico Blue with interest before I discovered the Red Fang posted locally. Your video clips and comments have been timely and definite motivators for me to seriously check it out. I'll let you know how things work out....
i'm happy to report I bought the 12" Red Fang last night. I popped it in tonight and messed around for an hour (volume was low, kids in bed). There was an immediate difference in sound compared to the Vintage 30 even at low volumes. Big improvement! Smooth, warm, richer quality to the cleans. I haven't had the opportunity to open it up a let it roar, but I'm sure it will sound real nice, as you said it would. Thanks for the recommendations!
Congrats! But believe me, your eyes will pop out once you turn the amp up. The warmth is amazing, and not only on the cleans. Be sure to try Electro Harmonix EL84 power tubes and JJ preamp tubes, a really great combo. The EL84s will give a more natural drive to your tone and the JJ preamp tubes will give you a smooth, more noisefree overall performance. Glad you like the sound (though it IS hard to NOT like it :D )!
:D Nice. Glad I could help. Be sure to tell me how the tube change went ;) (I've still got to get the best tubes & speaker for my Vox AC15 and Fender Princeton Reverb Reissue... so there's a lot of excitement waiting for me too :D )
Thanks for posting ... I enjoyed that. You're too hard on yourself. The average audio consumer can't tell where you made your mistakes. That was a very enjoyable relaxed groove...
Very nice! Thanks! (Now you've forced me to try and learn it ;-))

Right. Tube swaps are next. I feel like a little kid the day before Christmas!

Thanks! Yeah, I tend to to that and that's why I don't upload more vids - I'm too critical of anything I play :)
