  • Both came from Swansea

  • @macshealbhaich almost, Mary was born in Ystradgynlais and brought up in Pontardawe

  • I do not understand Welsh, but this is lovely.

  • @docmalthus - the Welsh school system encourages music and song. The English leave all that to Simon Cowell. In Lancashire, my kid's primary school had to hold jumble sales to raise money for a oiano - the local primary school where I now live has cellos and violins AND a good school choir!

  • It sounds like Edison recorded this right after he invented the light bulb.

  • @meanwiddlekid Thank you. We're all refreshed and challenged by your unique point of view.

  • @meanwiddlekid What a funny, matter-of-fact remark on this solemn and lofty performance! You made me laugh:) I like the singers though.

  • @meanwiddlekid I thought ready kilowatt invented the light bulb?

  • Hyfryd - Cerys Matthews sings this song in her most recent album ('Tir'), and cited this version as one of her favourites. I can see why. :)

  • @YMarchogGwachul

It is lovely, I so wish they had recorded it,

  • I'm only stating the obvious when I say that, year in and year out, there are no finer singers than those that come from Wales. Nor will there ever be.

  • watched this on a Black and White TV programme, Im guessing someone recoreded it on an old reel to reel tape machine. My Dad said SSHH listen to this! and I did, just another thing that pointed me towards Wales!

  • @diddleymaz Hi You guessed right, reel to reel, then to cassette then to cd then to youtube.

    Nice to hear from you

    Pat

  • @richpat but was it the Mary Hopkin show? I remember the actual performance and I think it was her show about 1968 .

  • @richpat i think it was Mary Hopkin's show about 1968 ?

  • @diddleymaz Hi, No it was Sir Harry's own show. Mary didn't get her own show until 1970

  • @richpat so can you tell me the date of it please?

  • @diddleymaz Yes it was 1969, she appeared twice on his tv series, and sang this with him again.

  • o nin chwara ar y gareg wen pan o nin fach..:)

  • This is so beautiful! Why did the ever sing in English? The Welsh songs are much lovelier.

  • I found this by accident, glad that I did. The counterpoint of these two works so well.

  • Beautiful song, I'm familiar with Bryn Terfel's version, this is lovely too. Makes me feel hiraeth, and brings a tear to my Welsh eye. Diolch.

  • Well aren't you a waste of two billion years of evolution. But I'm glad to see you're not letting your education get in the way of your ignorance. Run along home now there's a good child your cruelly depriving a village somewhere of an idiot.

  • despite the poor quality ancient recording - it is clear this was a beautiful rendition of one of the world's most haunting melodies...Dafydd y Garreg Wen - David of the White Rock, the harpist who calls for his harp and composes this dirge of love for his harp and his family on his deathbed.

  • I'm exactly Mary's age and generation--and a lifetime Beatle fan. When Macca started Apple I'm sooo glad he ended being the mentor to two great acts--Badfinger, and of course, Mary...

  • If someone asked me to describe the voice of an angel, I would simply play one of Mary's recordings.

    U.W.

  • beautiful girl with beautiful voice :))

  • Mae'r gan yn drist on'd yn hardd. Llawer o ddiolch ichi.

  • Sir Harry........." Goon " but not forgotten. RIP Neddy

  • the old jokes are still the best! (LOL)

  • wish id been born in the 50 or 60's i like this dreamier sort of music better than lots of todays music

  • Nice vid, richpat.

  • i wanted to marry her when i was a kid.

    were the days lol
