Damn, if he only trained 3-4 days a week and half an hour each time, that'd be a total of 2 hours a week? Why even call yourself a BBr? Nothing against Mentzer, but I have to go to the gym for at least an hour every day, to either train abs or do some stretching or even walk on the stair master... These clips have got too be the most informative, reliable, trustworthy, instructive and absolutely true to example videos that i have seen yet on Youtube, and i've seen and looked for many. =|
You must train with weights at least 2 years to do right this kind of training.. must do a proper strech warm up(as we lisen in high intensity part1).You must have a partner to help you at the last reps. This kind of training is design to burn all the fibers of the muscles based in the "same muscle superset"model, with force reps and mayby negative reps.It works but from my experience you must have tremendous energy.
dit anyone tried the rest pause style used by Mike?
i am doing it now and love the feeling it gives but i would love to see what results it will give in the long run.
i love heavty duty. because i was tired wasting hours in the gym with zero results.
even if hit or heavy duty will not give me the mass it promisses, at least my strenght got way up and i still have a live beside training compared to all the high volume programs...
GREAT ADVICE, but i felt like i was watching an 80s horror flick. do you think they knew that the music they were using was so creapy. I was getting chills down my spine watching this at midnight alone in my room. weird!
@Doitonhigh The music that starts at 7:23 is from "The Shining." It's from the part of the movie where Jack Nicholson and his family is driving to the hotel together for the first time. So you're right, it's plain bizarre hearing this music...and watching him do dumbbell flyes.

To samugrose, that depends on the personal experiance of all those bodybuilders! ya somethings will work for one person and not for others but the cause and effect is this there!.
I completly agree with thegargeman21. I'm a HIT trainer and trainee training every 7 days works very well I go up in waight reps or both every week!. and I even take an extra day or two once and while to ensure that I dont reach a sticking point!. I find it sad to think that mike was being taken for a fool all those years. its ironic because its the same for me at my gym. the cause and effect of HIT scare people its crazy! anyways I owe it to mike mentzer!.
If your too fat to see your "weak points" then you really shouldn't even be thinking about competitions lol . . . Regardless the people posting in here are just casual lifters.
That is the whole essence of HIT training. You work out short (25 min tops) of 1 set each but nonstop and overload your muscles to the point of complete fatigue. Easier said than done . . . If your not willing to give your true 100% then it won't be worth it.
Of course we have individual differences but this is on the right track according to my experience. I'm 48 with pretty good genetics to build. Right now I'm losing fat and gaining muscle on a limited calorie diet. I train 6 days a week. Each day I do 30 minutes of cardio and about 10 sets of body building. A set could be 12 to 25 reps but is fairly intense. He's right. You train enough to grow but not so hard that you need to wait days before training again.
Your missing the point of this . . . Your training is nothing like what he advocates.
If you do HIT properly you will only be working out 2 times a week. 6 times a week=overboard
And losing fat while gaining muscle is a huge myth. Everyone thinks they are doing it but it requires EXACT caloric monitoring or very specific circumstances. Not even full time bodybuilders try and "lose fat while gaining muscle." To build muscle you need a caloric surplus. Its possible but not the best method.
@thegarbageman21 WRONG! Like with everything it all depends. Depends on many factors.I'm tweaking the concept of his training to fit my goals. It's not enough to take things at face value, you must be able to reason.
Yes I can gain muscle and lose fat but I won't gain anywhere near as fast as I would on a higher calorie diet. When I reach my desired fat level, I'll increase my calories and concentrate more on lifting than cardio.
Lol whatever buddy. Please elaborate on what i said was, as you so politely put . . ., "WRONG." You are right. Everything depends on your goals and what works for you. That doesn't mean to train mixing things together though. Lifting 6 times a week is a bad choice. I can tell you aren't experienced just by what you have said. You wan't to burn fat after you gain muscle. Not as how you described. You can't gain decent size without gaining fat. And im not talking bodybuilder massive either.
"You train enough to grow but not so hard that you need to wait days before training again" - That quote is 100% false and not at all what Menzer was trying to explain. When you work out you wan't to use intensity no matter how you train. Whether its low rep, high rep, or HIT.
I get the feeling your working out 6 times a week just to burn calories because your overweight. Even if thats the case its not a good idea. Focus on gaining muscle in the gym. Lose fat with cardio / new muscle mass.
@thegarbageman21 No, you don't understand the concept of HIT. All HIT means is that relatively short bursts of intensity is better than endless sets when it comes to building muscle. You can tweak this to fit your needs. In the above quote I'm talking a different part the next day. It used to be that everyone listened to Arnold and trained wrong. Bodybuilding is not an endurance sport.
Actually I do. Ive read books by arthur jones and others. And you can't tweak it to fit your needs. If you do you aren't doing "HIT" training. HIT is a specific style of workout. Maybe your confusing HIT with HIIT. HIT uses many compound movements and works all muscles to fatigue in short workouts (under 25 min)with prolonged rest periods (2 workouts a week). They way you are working out is completely different. Splitting up muscle groups is a more traditional style.
@thegarbageman21 Don't you get it? These guys made valuble discoveries but didn't have it all correct. You take the best of the past and move into the future with it. You don't mimic some 40 year old routine exactly.
I get it. Thats why im 5"10 170 lbs @ 8% BF. I have achieved results and personally trained kids at my undergrad university. Im in med school now so I understand the science behind it to.
Nobody has it all correct. There is still much to be learned about weight training. Im not saying that this is 100% correct. HIT training is something that is still researched and new books are coming out TODAY.
The thing that you aren't getting is the main principle behind it. HIT doesn't just mean "short bout of energy." Nor is it just a "discovery." HIT is a specific style that has evolved just like the traditional. I dont think' you understand that. It is still evolving today. You always want to work out "itensely" and avoid endless sets regardless of your style. HIT = infrequent, short, extreme full body workouts to complete exhaustion with long rest periods between.
@mrwilliamwonder the problemm with so called future training is that the only improvement has been in growth drugs. I fail to see if you have the genetics any routine will work then and present.
MM taught us HGH and steriods shrink yer pecka (MM's was the size of this -) And MM had the mind of a dead flea. His death was sad only in that ...hmmmI'm still not sure why his death was sad....Can somebody tell me.............
Mentzer was an Objectivist- the philosophy developed by Ayn Rand and he insisted that philosophy and bodybuilding are one and the same. He said "Man, is an indivisible entity, an integrated unit of mind and body." Thus, his books contain as much philosophy as they do bodybuilding information.
Mentzer took the bodybuilding concepts developed by Arthur Jones and attempted to perfect them.

You shouldn't perform the barbell rows the chick shows us, she's doing it with bad form, you could really injure your back by doing that. Make sure you keep your chest up, and your back needs to make a straight line. Don't bend over.
Barbell rows are very dangerous no matter what the form...fantastic for development if done correctly, but its just too easy to seriously injure yourself.
Same for chasing an animal, if you weren't fast enough your body would adapt and grow the muscle so you could have a better chance the next time. It's plain nature, people thought he was loony cause they were afraid of a new concept of bodybuilding. People are always scared of something they've never seen before or heard of. Just like eating a new food your very skeptical about it and wonder if it's gonna be good or not. That's why people didn't believe him.
hey whiplash dont talk bad about people unless you know the facts. Mentzer didnt drink his own piss dude. Just cause one guy somewhere said one thing doesn't mean its true. As for the HIT training it's nature and plain and simple. Before when we had to hunt our own food we built muscle the same way. If you were trying to catch a deer and you couldn't throw your spear accurately your body would adapt for next time so you could throw it better.
whip: fat gut?? Mentzer was shredded and was bigger and harder than the 79 O where Mike mysteriously got a PERFECT 300 but then lost to Zane. (Zane was Weider's boy, go figure). Its ARNOLD who had the layer of fat at the bottom ab....Arnold had a 4 pack for that show, it was fixed. There is a reason why CBS never aired that show, & for some reason CBS is footage is unobtainable, most likely because it is clear and shows Arnold was not in shape. The only footage of the 80 O is grainy 4 a reason
@pmango1000 your right on target with the 300 score...and losing to Zane with a less than perfect score. They say the reason which is outrages. That night during the posing he had a soft drink and he retained water? The real reason they weren't going to give him the win because MM would have never endorsed any of the Weider supplement line.
Let's not keep silent about their STEROIDS and other DRUGS that they use!

It's CHEATING, ILLEGAL, DANGEROUS and some ROIDERS want to SCAM people into buying their line of supplements. It's the DRUGS that made them bigger, stronger and faster, not their BOGUS supplements.
@ChezJazza : Europeans only have 4 abs??? Hmmm Tell that to Dennis Tennerino, a European decent, Tom Platz, European decent. Mike Mentzer was GERMAN too by the way. Sorry, Arnold just wasnt in shape for the 80 O. He was still awesome though
I can say from my own experience that pre-exhaustion for the lats, as an example, yeild better development. I've been using pre-exhaust pullovers and my lats strength has gradually increased.
i think this type of traiing like any other type of training works as long as you push ur self as long as possible, but the only way you can get to the size of mentzer or arnold is waith steroids, training naturaly is just impossible to make gains like that because the body is not designed to be like that
We all did a form of heavy duty/HIT in school lol.....circuit training on the universal all body parts, you were so sore you were glad to wait until the following week to workout...but I remember making big gains back when I 1st started working out...not something you want to maintain throughout life...but a good starting point for beginners to make rapid gains.
idnt get wot hees tryin to say stil, do sets of 8 wif perfect form and right weight or sets til failure? or is it the last set thats the 1 til failure>?
How has our generation become so obsessed with physical perfection. We should all wake up and understand that in order to achieve the physiques of the professionals there must be a disciplined, regimented steroid and "uppers" use.
This is a dangerous training method. Many athletes have suffered serious training Injuries from using HIT. Look at Dorian yates it ended his career.
Mike Mentzer admitted using large dosages of amphetamines. He claimed that his animalistic training drive came from reading nietzches an Ayn Rand, Hey dont piss down my leg then tell me that its raining!!!
Executed properly HIT is one of the safest methods of training, i.e. slow, controlled reps with no momentum, swinging, bouncing or jerking of weights that could result in muscle or tendon tears. Dorian Yates's injuries were the result of deviating from these principles ie, fast reps using momentum. Yes Mike Mentzer used amphetamines, so what?
i was in agreement with you until you began your third sentence following which you've revealed yourself to be acomplete idiot. to even sujjest that any training he did had anything to do with his reliance on amphetamines (which rose from emotional issues) and to then somehow twist this into an attack on a philosophy is ludicrous. try thinking logically for once.
@vaj99 ... HIT done properly IS NOT DANGEROUS!!!!! If you get hurt lifting weights in general you got hurt because your form sucks! You cant hurt yourself by working hard, that is simply a load of bullshit. You can get hurt by inroading deeply and then doing something else physically demanding before you recover fully. I cannot stress the point enough though, if you exercise in a safe and controlled manner (superslow) you will not hurt yourself no matter how heavy the weight or how deep you work
@andycf87 Speaking of form though, the guy in the video was using body jerking near the end of his medial deltoid isolation move prior to doing the overhead pressing on the machine.
2 cycles = Do your two exercises in superset fashion (Leg Extensions immediately followed by Squats). Each exercise is 1 set of failure, with the goal being 10 reps. After you finish Squats, take a brief rest and do them both again. Remember, each exercises uses 1 heavy set of failure, with the goal being 10 reps.
This is a very serious exercise routine. Have you tried it?? Bet HIT would dwindle you down to a true girley man. It is not for wimps like you. I have been doing it for over a year and the results are like taking steroids. Bet you would be puking all your lunch out afterwards.
really...i always use a thumbless grip...infact most pros do.You can drive up a heavier weight as the bar is not in the middle of your palm(where you have less power) but more towards your wrist where you have more power.I only wrap my thumb around the bar on curls and deadlifts...all other exercises i use a thumbless grip and never had the bar slip out of my hands once.
Who cares about powerlifters. There the same guys that rely on blaster shirts etc, plus arching their backs....they train for something different.Like I said ive never had a bar slip yet and have trained for over 20 years....
Ok...yeah those people that had a bar slip probably used too smooth a bar,not enough chalk or didn't have their grip set properly to begin with.....Im the type of person before i start pressing thats picky about the bar i use....i often touch 2 to 4 bars before making a selection whereas most people just simply get on the bench and use whatever bar is there
Damn, if he only trained 3-4 days a week and half an hour each time, that'd be a total of 2 hours a week? Why even call yourself a BBr? samboboyo 1 week ago
@samboboyo listen to Mentzer's lecture about HIT training and it will start to make sense.
remember you have to use heavy weight, slow movement and go to absolute failure on every set.
if you train like that you'd need far more rest time in between workouts.
i'm trying this method right now and i'll soon be able to judge if it's effective or not

@VolpeXIII After a superset of leg extensions and squats, you would take a break. You'll need a break assuming you gave 100% effort, I promise.
Mike had mixed feelings on how long that break should be. Just use your best judgment about when you are ready for another superset.

You must train with weights at least 2 years to do right this kind of training.. must do a proper strech warm up(as we lisen in high intensity part1).You must have a partner to help you at the last reps. This kind of training is design to burn all the fibers of the muscles based in the "same muscle superset"model, with force reps and mayby negative reps.It works but from my experience you must have tremendous energy.

i am doing it now and love the feeling it gives but i would love to see what results it will give in the long run.
i love heavty duty. because i was tired wasting hours in the gym with zero results.
even if hit or heavy duty will not give me the mass it promisses, at least my strenght got way up and i still have a live beside training compared to all the high volume programs...

That is the whole essence of HIT training. You work out short (25 min tops) of 1 set each but nonstop and overload your muscles to the point of complete fatigue. Easier said than done . . . If your not willing to give your true 100% then it won't be worth it.

boils2 2 years ago
Of course we have individual differences but this is on the right track according to my experience. I'm 48 with pretty good genetics to build. Right now I'm losing fat and gaining muscle on a limited calorie diet. I train 6 days a week. Each day I do 30 minutes of cardio and about 10 sets of body building. A set could be 12 to 25 reps but is fairly intense. He's right. You train enough to grow but not so hard that you need to wait days before training again.
mrwilliamwonder 2 years ago
Add: in his book it's said: 5 min - 10 max Repetitions.
If u can make 12 reps... u have to put more weight!!!

what a stupid steriod queen mike was............
boils2 2 years ago
Your missing the point of this . . . Your training is nothing like what he advocates.
If you do HIT properly you will only be working out 2 times a week. 6 times a week=overboard
And losing fat while gaining muscle is a huge myth. Everyone thinks they are doing it but it requires EXACT caloric monitoring or very specific circumstances. Not even full time bodybuilders try and "lose fat while gaining muscle." To build muscle you need a caloric surplus. Its possible but not the best method.
thegarbageman21 2 years ago
@thegarbageman21 WRONG! Like with everything it all depends. Depends on many factors.I'm tweaking the concept of his training to fit my goals. It's not enough to take things at face value, you must be able to reason.
Yes I can gain muscle and lose fat but I won't gain anywhere near as fast as I would on a higher calorie diet. When I reach my desired fat level, I'll increase my calories and concentrate more on lifting than cardio.
mrwilliamwonder 2 years ago
Lol whatever buddy. Please elaborate on what i said was, as you so politely put . . ., "WRONG." You are right. Everything depends on your goals and what works for you. That doesn't mean to train mixing things together though. Lifting 6 times a week is a bad choice. I can tell you aren't experienced just by what you have said. You wan't to burn fat after you gain muscle. Not as how you described. You can't gain decent size without gaining fat. And im not talking bodybuilder massive either.
thegarbageman21 2 years ago
"You train enough to grow but not so hard that you need to wait days before training again" - That quote is 100% false and not at all what Menzer was trying to explain. When you work out you wan't to use intensity no matter how you train. Whether its low rep, high rep, or HIT.
I get the feeling your working out 6 times a week just to burn calories because your overweight. Even if thats the case its not a good idea. Focus on gaining muscle in the gym. Lose fat with cardio / new muscle mass.
thegarbageman21 2 years ago
@thegarbageman21 No, you don't understand the concept of HIT. All HIT means is that relatively short bursts of intensity is better than endless sets when it comes to building muscle. You can tweak this to fit your needs. In the above quote I'm talking a different part the next day. It used to be that everyone listened to Arnold and trained wrong. Bodybuilding is not an endurance sport.
mrwilliamwonder 2 years ago
Actually I do. Ive read books by arthur jones and others. And you can't tweak it to fit your needs. If you do you aren't doing "HIT" training. HIT is a specific style of workout. Maybe your confusing HIT with HIIT. HIT uses many compound movements and works all muscles to fatigue in short workouts (under 25 min)with prolonged rest periods (2 workouts a week). They way you are working out is completely different. Splitting up muscle groups is a more traditional style.
thegarbageman21 2 years ago
@thegarbageman21 Don't you get it? These guys made valuble discoveries but didn't have it all correct. You take the best of the past and move into the future with it. You don't mimic some 40 year old routine exactly.
mrwilliamwonder 2 years ago
HIT training is something that is still researched and new books are coming out TODAY.
thegarbageman21 2 years ago
The thing that you aren't getting is the main principle behind it. HIT doesn't just mean "short bout of energy." Nor is it just a "discovery." HIT is a specific style that has evolved just like the traditional. I dont think' you understand that. It is still evolving today. You always want to work out "itensely" and avoid endless sets regardless of your style. HIT = infrequent, short, extreme full body workouts to complete exhaustion with long rest periods between.
thegarbageman21 2 years ago
@mrwilliamwonder the problemm with so called future training is that the only improvement has been in growth drugs. I fail to see if you have the genetics any routine will work then and present.

That's why people didn't believe him.
mmaluco207 2 years ago
hey whiplash dont talk bad about people unless you know the facts.

The only footage of the 80 O is grainy 4 a reason
pmango1000 2 years ago 9
@pmango1000 your right on target with the 300 score...and losing to Zane with a less than perfect score. They say the reason which is outrages. That night during the posing he had a soft drink and he retained water? The real reason they weren't going to give him the win because MM would have never endorsed any of the Weider supplement line.

This is a dangerous training method. Many athletes have suffered serious training Injuries from using HIT. Look at Dorian yates it ended his career.
Mike Mentzer admitted using large dosages of amphetamines. He claimed that his animalistic training drive came from reading nietzches an Ayn Rand, Hey dont piss down my leg then tell me that its raining!!!
vaj99 2 years ago 7
Executed properly HIT is one of the safest methods of training, i.e. slow, controlled reps with no momentum, swinging, bouncing or jerking of weights that could result in muscle or tendon tears. Dorian Yates's injuries were the result of deviating from these principles ie, fast reps using momentum. Yes Mike Mentzer used amphetamines, so what?

i was in agreement with you until you began your third sentence following which you've revealed yourself to be acomplete idiot. to even sujjest that any training he did had anything to do with his reliance on amphetamines (which rose from emotional issues) and to then somehow twist this into an attack on a philosophy is ludicrous. try thinking logically for once.

marxistsoldier 2 years ago

2 cycles = Do your two exercises in superset fashion (Leg Extensions immediately followed by Squats). Each exercise is 1 set of failure, with the goal being 10 reps. After you finish Squats, take a brief rest and do them both again. Remember, each exercises uses 1 heavy set of failure, with the goal being 10 reps.

coe2007 3 years ago
Dead right...a thumbless grip has probably caused more gym accidents than anything else.
It serves no purpose whatsoever.
Peter9761 3 years ago 2
really...i always use a thumbless grip...infact most pros do.You can drive up a heavier weight as the bar is not in the middle of your palm(where you have less power) but more towards your wrist where you have more power.I only wrap my thumb around the bar on curls and deadlifts...all other exercises i use a thumbless grip and never had the bar slip out of my hands once.
spade121981 3 years ago
Yeah...but it only needs to happen once, and it does happen.
With thumb wrapped around it never will happen.
Powerlifters call a thumbless grip the 'suicide grip'
Peter9761 3 years ago 3
Who cares about powerlifters. There the same guys that rely on blaster shirts etc, plus arching their backs....they train for something different.Like I said ive never had a bar slip yet and have trained for over 20 years....
spade121981 3 years ago
I've seen it happen...in fact you can see it happen on youtube.
Its up to you...as far as i'm concerned a thumbless grip is a risk not worth taking.
You only need slip once.
Peter9761 3 years ago 2
The other thing too is when you use a thumbless grip on your back exercises(except for deadlifts) your biceps aren't involved as much
spade121981 3 years ago
Oh i use thumbless on back...but never if i'm under the weight...as in bench
Peter9761 3 years ago
Ok...yeah those people that had a bar slip probably used too smooth a bar,not enough chalk or didn't have their grip set properly to begin with.....Im the type of person before i start pressing thats picky about the bar i use....i often touch 2 to 4 bars before making a selection whereas most people just simply get on the bench and use whatever bar is there
spade121981 3 years ago
I used to use thumbless,i almost let it slip once, that was enough for me.
Agreed,it was a smooth bar,but i don't think a thumbless grip has any benefits anyway.
Powerlifters lift more than anyone, but with thumbs wrapped around.
Surely if they thought more weight could be used they would risk a thumbless grip.
Perhaps some do though,i don't know.
Peter9761 3 years ago
I always feel stonger with the thumbless grip.I seem to be able to drive the weight easier.
spade121981 3 years ago
Ill tell you another little secret too.Its better to use a thicker bar too.Now most weigh 45lbs but some are slightly thicker than others. If
