gasquet can EASILY ralley backhand to backhand, or even his backhand to federer's forehand, but the minute it goes to his forehand, gasquet's screwed.
@DoctorDoomsday1 Sampras, Agassi, and even Nadal call him king of grass and the best player ever because he plays so well, not because he wins or loses. You think he doesn't work hard? Obviously you win 16 grand slams and 65 million dollars in prize money by just sitting on a couch. Just go away.
@kumoasis Yeah he shanks a lot now. And he plays with a lower tension. Also the whole motion was different. In my opinion up until 2007 he would sort of hit max power flat shots about 40% of the time now he seems to be content with hitting as much topspin as possible.
Wow. Normally highlights are really biased towards federer but here I feel that Gasquet played really well too. But federer played even better. Sometimes it's just because the oponent is bad but the opponent today would've won against any other person.
I can't understand why the commentators keep talking about how much Federer's backhand had improved at that point in time. I mean, this match with Gasquet did take place less than a month after one of the most horrific displays of a backhand ever in the 2006 French Open Final against Nadal. Doesn't add up.
@365to173repubsPWNED They say that crap every year. Federer's backhand was spectacular in 2005. 2004 and 2003, too. Heck, 2002 and 2001 as well. The FO 06 match against Nadal was an aberration, but there was no reason to yap about how much it had improved "in the last year," because it was the same as it had been.
i love fed. i do however think one day it will be the KINGS of grass - nadal and federer. as long as nadal stays healthy i think he'll end up with 5 or 6 of these. love them both...and awesome that their such amazing friends like in that charity video where they can't stop laughing
and next time ppl talk weak era bullshit, remind them in this tournament Fed beat Gasquet, Henman, Mahut, Berdych, Ancic, Bjorkman with no sets lost then 4 sets over Nadal in the Final.
That rally from 0:56 on is classic: Two of the greatest backhands (certainly the greatest one-handed backhands) contest with each other - and the greatest forehand of all time finishes the point with a clean winner.
people forget how good federer was and they will say the competition was weak but it was better than previous years. everyone says, oh it was so much tougher in the 70's, 80's and even 90's. but really you only remember a handfull of people and thats what youre judging it on. tennis has alot more depth these days even sampras says so. there may be less serve volly etc but thats not because of lack of talent but the games changed, courts have changed.there are hardly anymore grass courts left...
Oh my god, it's just incredible how well he played back then, I mean, he was just toying with Gasquet, who did not even do anything wrong, Roger was just too good. As soon as Gasquet played just a single ball not with maximum pace and angle on the lines, Federer just RIPPED IT down the line or crosscourt!!!
I'm sure that this Federer would have won against Nadal yesterday, there's no doubt! (And of course against Djokovic on saturday, too.)

i love the way the grass looks when its all fresh and not worn out. Interestingly, the grass starts to wear after the first round, just goes to show its all baseline tennis, where the serve and volley at??
On a side-note, watching poor Gasquet getting slaughtered here, he did play Roddick really well in that QF the year after this. It's like he was a different player, epic match that was.
grasscourt tennis was so much more amusing until 2006. then all of a sudden i dont know what they did to the grass but they slowed it down so much the rallies on grass started look like on clay.not the ultra fast tennis relying on sheer touch and feel that was required like in here and that was so fresh and easy for the eyes.
the federer from 2004-2007 would muder the federer from 2010. I just can't seem to find any comparison between the two. federer used to play really magnificently, nowadays he's losing in a slam quarterfinal, his head goes to outer space every now and then, he isn't half as agressive as he used to be. he's just not fun to watch anymore, he's just some guy with talent who can play outstanding very few times a year. i used to be a great fan, but nowadays he just loses too many times without reason
@mechkapechka the real way grass tennis should be played is super fast grass = how tennis should be played & was born, now all we have is some below-par slow roland garros clay like grass = not how tennis should be played. that sucks.
After Gasquet beat Roddick @ Wimbledon alot of former tennis players/commentators were saying that Gasquet was more naturally talented than Federer...but even if he was more naturally talented, he never put it to good use. I like his game but in the end it doesnt matter whos more talented because its hard work that pays off in the end...FedEx goes down as the greatest!
In this video you can clearly see, that federer's racket accleration is much faster than nowadays.. I am struck with the new racket k-factor that became less.. Do you think so too?
Federer seems to be in a more relaxed frame of mind when he's playing 3/5 tennis matches. Maybe knowing that he's really the best player out there, he can take his time and the longer the game goes on, the less likely he's going to lose an unlucky game.

strange in 2006 he completely outplayed nadal in the final and 2006 he was quite close to losing... as for 2008 its quite miraculous he came close to winning somehow
Gasquet looks tiny coz he has a big head and his movements are pretty stiff. But he's a one handed backhander and I respect that. ;D
