What you say is not true for all trenches in ww1.

You had so many trenches that you could probaly spin em around europe, so you can be dam sure that the diversity was HUGE and not all of em looked like your history book describes. If you want, i will show you a trench that is not zig zack, infact those trenches were more common at the western front mainly done by the germans while in the south, the trenches were more straight
