@TheCHARGER426 I'm not sure where in the UK you would purchase one, but you could always order one from a US train store or buy one ebay or something,
Fantastic! I'd love to get one! Could you do a review on the NS SD70M-2 Lionel is soon to release? I am looking at getting one and would love to see a review! The CP ES44 you showed is a very in-accurate, the radiator is the one used on Dash 9s not ES44s, just thought I'd point that out.
I know the problem that you have with the plastic instead of fans but the thing is that Lionel mad that NS Tank Train set with different engine the set you have is the 9798 but earlier Lionel made it with NS 9039 so i am not sure if the 9039 has see through or not so i hope this helps
Hey Eric my Dad's friend has the CN Coal Train set and it has a EOTD on the Last Hopper and he has 30 hoppers now and he tried to remove the EOTD because he had 2 of the EOTD cars
great review, lionel does make nice locomot ive but thier not cost effective in anyway thats why im on the mth band wagon you can buy a preimer line loco for atleast 429 to lionel 600 plus
I'm interested in what diesel locomotives you have seen Lionel make that cost over $600... as far as I recall only the GE Hybrid and Genset, which both deserve their high price, cost over that much. Most Lionel diesels are between $400 and $500, nearly the same as MTH.
@CSXTransportation Thought $600 is a bit high, in general the retail price of scale Lionel diesels is generally higher than the retail price of MTH's premier diesels. MTH offers the most bang for your buck. For example, the Lionel AC6000's retail for $550 whereas the MTH AC6000's retail for $430. I think that Lionel tends to mark up the price of their stuff simply because it has the Lionel logo on the box.
Yeah, I've seen those two wires that can be disconnected. The only problem I have with that is that it looks a little bad to have wires dangling from the botton of the car. I might eventually install a little micro switch down there to allow me to turn the light on and off easily and without having a bunch of wires dangling underneath.
Awesome review. I'm also a 100% MTH guy, however I have heard some of the newer sounds in the Lionel Legacy units and was considering getting that system in addition to my MTH DCS. However if their engines are still detail lacking which is a sore point for me, I'm wondering if it pays or will MTH produce an upgrade software to bring their DCS up to par with some of the legacy features. One for sure is the whistle, still not as good as the legacy option. What to do, what to do... lol.
But don't forget that the MTH DCS won't allow you fully functional all the legacy features. MTH should come out with a more up to date system to fully support legacy. That's y i chose not to buy the legacy command unit.
you should get the Canadian National Coal Train Set. Its alot like this but the engine is a sd-70m2 but it looks alot better with more detailing and instead of tank cars its coal cars
Regarding your comment about the detail of the new NS Dash-9, I see what you mean. I also have a Lionel-made Dash-9, but in the CSX livery (#9019), made in 2000, and it has same plastic solid radiator and fixed platform. Is Lionel the only manufacturer that does this??
No Manufacturer does EVERYTHING right, in my experience. Seems to me that each manufacturer usually shines in one area but lacks in another. Don't ask me why. I could give examples of what I'm talking about, but I don't have enough space here.
The fuel tank is my biggest thing. My SD-90 has the worst fuel tank! I haven't measured, but it looks like it's a scale mile off the ground! It is strange that it doesn't have sunshades because my SD-90 does. I personally don't like the EOTD because it isn't on the coupler and it looks too short. The non-see through fans are strange too.
The first Scale proportion GE DASH 9s from Lionel came out in 2000 and were produced in China. Why they did not match the M.T.H. Premier units made about the same time can only mean that the Lionel management were cutting out details on purpose.
Lionel puts out good stuff, but they just can't seem to put together consistent and predictable product lines. That's my biggest gripe with them. But, this is a nice set and it runs great!
It had better be for what their charging for it. I ordered the Vision UP Genset switcher and it had better be a 10/10 or I'm gonna be seriously pissed.
Great video Eric. I have the Legacy as I await the arrival of the "GE ES44AC Hybrid" engine. I'm not a big fan of Lionel, but perhaps the hybrids won't be a disappointment......I can only hope! As I don't have any Lionel engines....only MTH, maybe this will change my opinion of Lionel.
One thing I don't like about Lionel is that their rolling stock says "Made by Lionel" on the sides. Which is very unrealistic. They've been doing forever and they don't seem to "grow up."
The third rail. Hmmm, not really, I just see it as if a "spare rail" has been laid there. I've seen tracks along the Northeast Corridor for example that have spare rails between them.
I agree...it makes it difficult to even buy scenery items from them (bridges, water towers, signals) since they insist on putting a big LIONEL stamp all over everything....LOL---Lionelville!
hey dude.Thank you vry much for posting this product review.
At first I was planning to buy the set, but i noticed some things awkward on the overall detailing. I find that Lionel needs to come out of the shell and play serious now that MTH has stepped their game up already since the recent yrs.
Ppl say money doesn't buy happiness - Yeah right...

do the new Lionel Dash 9s have the funky fuel tank? i have heard they are too short for the Dash 9s
