I've been watching videos that compare the strat and the les paul side by side and this is one of the best I've come across. Still haven't made up my mind which I like better, though! I love that ringing clarity of the strat, but I also love that throaty sound of the les paul, too.
@dragns get em both if you can. it took me a few years worth of saving, but i finally have a gibson custom and a custom deluxe strat. now if i could only play as good as this cat (rogvideos2007)
@dragns You can get that throaty tone by rolling off the tone on a Strat. But a Les Paul will never be able to get that Strat clarity because the pickups are already throaty.
Your first guitar was the best sound. Single coil pickups.
F is the hardest key to play in because it's so close to the nut.
As far as music. very good. The humbuckers drained the magic out of it though. The slide doesn't come up to the other first guitar because of the distortion sound. Very good overall.
A good example of how quality blues is born through good playing, and not necessarily fast playing. That strat playing sounds like right off a record. Great job.
it depends what kind of music you playing, mostly the gibson is best for blues, while the strat is best for overal rock music.......we think, tongue in cheek
@amj20007 - I agree amj. I use my SG Standard over my Strat for blues. In fact, I'm just not as comfortable with my Stat, in general, as with my SG. I'm able to tweak my sounds a lot better and really love the deep and passionate Gibson sound.
What a great player! Too many people get caught up in the Strat vs. Les Paul battle. Your great playing and natural feel prove that it doesn't matter which you play, it's what you do with it. Great job!
@dukeofpearl not everyone csn afford gibsons , so i think an epi les paul is still a led paul ... Not unless u have a golden spoon shoved up ur rich and snotty arse
@MrLekiz now obviously you no nothing about guitars. granted an early epiphone casino, riviera etc are great(60,s 70,s early 80,s) but the epiphone les pauls are NOT great! there good guitars for what they are. you,ll realise when you get older. with respect.
I've never had the pleasure of hearing you play before. No matter what insterment you have in your hands the soud comes from your finger tips. I think you could even make a 3 string guitar sound wonderful.
I'm going to have to rate the Les Paul tops because you color mached your shirt to it!
You play real good!!!! You're a very cool and instinctive player. Your feel is spot on. You love the blues I can tell. I really like your style, play on, man, i can hear clapton, green, bloomfield all mixed up in there. You have a great talent. I love the blues also, it is my life, my living and is also embedded in my soul. Bro', you have made my evening complete.
@Fruscianteistheman i kinda like the fender more, i actually used to own a les paul but sold it to buy a strat, strats are just more comfortable to work with
Yeah, the usage of a slide technique makes both guitars sound bluesy. It just depends on how iany guitar is played. The perfomance on the Les reminds me of B.B. King. At 3:00, on the Strat, that could sound like blues or hard rock (something The Stones would record) ...depends on how you listen :D I dig both!!
@Hotshott1990 Les Paul built The Log from an Epi using their factory after hours, and that was the first "real" LP. And sentences that go "everyone knows"are rarely true, as everyone knows!
Pretty swank Epiphone, man. I'm digging the Deluxe! You should try out an Epiphone Sheraton II. You can get some great tone out of those as well. Check out my vids if you are curious.
It's also upsetting that most these guitar players completely ignore their tone, and generally settle for a really ugly sound. This guy however is quite good. He's got a really nice feel and a great blues tone. Some more unique licks wouldn't hurt, but nonetheless, really nice job.
I personally don't give a shit. I don't know how you feel about tone but my view is that it's not about the sound it's about the guitarist. And you really make it clear that that's true. Anyways they sounded very similar to me because all I heard was some fucking incredibly beautifully unbelievably amazing blues solo.
@Django5198 That's kind of a silly thing to say. Tone is one of the most important aspects of good guitar playing, as you can never truly be great with an awful tone. There's more to good guitar playing then knowing how to move around the neck, the tone and unique feel of the player is a HUGE aspect. I'd guarantee you any good player is a lot better with a good tone. Look at many of the greats - they all had great unique and instantly recognizable tones.
@FlightoftheSpeedKing I suppose you're right but what I meant was that these two guitar tones are so similar that it doesn't really matter which one he uses. But yeah like you say this would sound awful with a metal tone or something.
@Django5198 It's funny you say that, it seems that a large majority of players here on youtube DO play with a brash and messy metal tone (yes sadly some use it for blues) which immediately sinks the performance. From what I've seen anybody who can play a fast solo or play a scale is dubbed an "amazing" guitar player, when in fact there's a small handful of truly great players, and it's the ones with a great sound and feel whilst thinking outside the box to avoid.
i love tht strat but the price of that sound is so much money compared to the les paul. but when it comes to blues strat is so nice and crisp. gna hav to vote strat
First of all GREAT PLAYING DUDE trully amazing!!!. Second, it's not fair to compare strat to an epiphone because it has slightly muddier and certainly a bit less clear sound than les paul. I think that you should compare strat and gibson les paul and I'm sure that the difference between the two won't be that big, I have gibson les paul and it sounds better for blues than my friend's strat... Rock on!
i started playing about a year and a half ago and the first thing i learned was blues scales and im decent at them now and i have an ibanez rg4exqm1 and trying to play blues on it without a bunch of effects is like trying to make a piano sound like a trumpet, as soon as i get to guitar center pick up s strat and put it on a tube amp everything i play starts soundin like hendrix and srv, the strat is definitely one of the best guitars for blues
che thelybaneitor quien dijo que la les paul son una mierda? me encanta la les paul es mas tengo una no me jodas pibe , porque te haces el guapo pero no te animas a venir y bancartela noob
when it comes to looks....da les paul wins...but pure &epic clear sound...FENDER STRAT hands down. i am a guitar man i have about 20....most of them fender strats
i can say that in the strat you can clearly hear the sounds but i prefer the neck pickup for blues performances. same for the les paul. i think its o bridge again...but goood rly good
WOW !!! Really, really, really fantastic. Five stars for you. I've got a Fender Strat scallopped and an Epiphone Les Paul Standard too. So at this time, I can't choose which one to prefer: I like their sound too much.....Should you try an Ibanez?
@MrWiigiiii epiphone les paul deluxe is way better than regular gibsons les paul studio and some gibsons les paul std too. People just see epiphone and think of korean cheap guitars..... anyway strat >> lp .. tele> sg ... in my modest opinion.
but epiphone is the knock off of gibson and squier is the knock off of fender. so wouldnt it be fair to compare knock off to knock off or the real thing to another instead of a knock off to a real fender or gibson?
@XxmynameboratxX its in no way a knock off. Epiphone is the only les paul providers that are not gibsons that have premission to produce them. They are partner companies. An epiphone les paul could never be as bad as a squire. They feel amazing when u play them.
for the fine gentleman showing off his chops for the rest of us, I give you a 10++++. I've learned more on the f scale from you than i have from anyone else ... very cool and thanks a lot man!
for those posting hate messages on this post and this fellows contributions ... I have some good news. minimum wage is slated to go up to $8.62 per hour!
@filolovejoy lol minimum up here in canada goin up to $10.25... and we have free healthcare xD srry had to throw that in...
Yes this dude does a wonderful job with the blues.... good stuff can be learned by watching this a few times... i just picked up a few good licks myself =)
Really enjoyed your slide work on the Strat, and I was thinking maybe I preferred you on the Strat, but then your closing section on the Les Paul was just so good. Well played dude!
@SuperWhofan1 not very true imo. The Les Paul was actually made for Blues.
The strat is imo more for Funk. But that doesn't mean you can't play blues on a strat! That's not what i'm saying, but i dont agree with you that the strat is better for blues ;)
@SuperWhofan1 If u ever get a chance to play a les paul with p90 pickups u will see a whole new area of tone. Its like a chunky strat and has the warmth of a humbucker as well.
@SuperWhofan1 I prefer Les Paul. Right, here Strat sounds better but that Les Paul is Epiphone (I have epiphone too ;-). ). Gibson's Les Pauls in my opinion sounds better than any Fenders especially in blues.
Love the jam bro, keep picking those blues not a genre better.

I even think those aren't proper full-sized humbuckers are they?
The fender sounds way better in my opinion

wouldn't it be more fair to compare a gibson les paul to a fender strat instead of an epiphone to a strat? The headstock says Epiphone...
otherwise its like comparing a squier to a gibson :/
XxmynameboratxX 1 year ago
@XxmynameboratxX epiphone is not a bad company. Not even as bad as a squire.
Escribble22 1 year ago
@Escribble22
but epiphone is the knock off of gibson and squier is the knock off of fender. so wouldnt it be fair to compare knock off to knock off or the real thing to another instead of a knock off to a real fender or gibson?
XxmynameboratxX 1 year ago
@XxmynameboratxX its in no way a knock off. Epiphone is the only les paul providers that are not gibsons that have premission to produce them. They are partner companies. An epiphone les paul could never be as bad as a squire. They feel amazing when u play them.

whoa someone still plays slide guitar, really hard to make an even vibrato on that, you did that really good
bushibayushi 1 year ago
You sounded absolutely brilliant on both.
Really enjoyed your slide work on the Strat, and I was thinking maybe I preferred you on the Strat, but then your closing section on the Les Paul was just so good. Well played dude!

The strat is better for the blues. You can hear his beautiful playing done justice with the strat.
The Les Paul has a more hard rock feel to it but still sounds wonderful when a musician as good as this guy plays it.
My vote: the stratocaster
SuperWhofan1 1 year ago 33
@SuperWhofan1 not very true imo. The Les Paul was actually made for Blues.
The strat is imo more for Funk. But that doesn't mean you can't play blues on a strat! That's not what i'm saying, but i dont agree with you that the strat is better for blues ;)
BerkayBB 1 year ago
@SuperWhofan1 the strat sounds warmy and better.....but like you my i like the Gibson too, my vote : Strato.
kartman74usa 1 year ago
@SuperWhofan1 i totaly agree with you, but less we forget which one BB king plays, the les paul has more blues than ud think
ChrisyB666 1 year ago
@SuperWhofan1 If u ever get a chance to play a les paul with p90 pickups u will see a whole new area of tone. Its like a chunky strat and has the warmth of a humbucker as well.
Escribble22 1 year ago
@SuperWhofan1 I agree.. but I think the les paul sounds more countryish

@SuperWhofan1 This was a vote? :D
treguzzardo 1 year ago
@SuperWhofan1 yeah man I agree with you. it takes a good hand to get a good tone with a les paul (for blues at least. where tone counts the most :D)
samantonio 1 year ago
@SuperWhofan1 OF COURSE THE STRAT IS BETTER IN THIS VIDEO, HE IS USING A FENDER STRATOCASTER COMPARED TO A EPIPHONE LES PAUL
chicobolatilo 1 year ago
@SuperWhofan1 I prefer Les Paul. Right, here Strat sounds better but that Les Paul is Epiphone (I have epiphone too ;-). ). Gibson's Les Pauls in my opinion sounds better than any Fenders especially in blues.
Nitka027 1 year ago
honestly, when you are playing as good as this guy is, any guitar sounds good. they both win in my book!
