I respect satriani as a player, but his riffs just don't hold up, I mean to me surfing with the alien is an earsore. EJ's riffs are much more interesting, he uses interesting chord structures and tries to play it different every time. Why has he then not gotten the success that Satriani has? Because most music people who listen to music these days are tone deaf and impatient and all they appreciate is speed. I don't care about his stage persona, but most of his stuff puts me to sleep.
There's a fine line between great guitar playing and someone sounding like they are just playing to themselves... does this guy even look at his audience? I'll take Joe Bonamassa any day!
@curlyscouse musicians tend to be concentrated on music, when they're making a perfect performance....otherwise, you can always go onstage drunk and play really simple music really bad, like old guns n roses did a lot of times... that said, joe bonamassa is an incredible player :)
(Sorry for my poor vocabulary and grammar, english is not my native language.)
I discovered Eric today and just watched the whole 'HoB' vid collection.
I undestand that Eric is a great guitar player.
But...
Someone said 'The following silence after a piece of Mozart is still from Mozart'
Does Eric breathe sometimes? Does he take time to rise his head from his neck? Does he keep in mind that the music doesen't need to be be played with tons of notes?
@albatroz424 Your vocabulary is fine. In interviews Eric often states that he listens to violin and cello players. Eric is an enigma in rock; vegetarian, meditates, created his own tone and blessed with facility. On the fast stuff I think it's in his DNA, but listen to Manhattan or East Wes or some acoustic work. See him live if possible. Look up Peter Green playing Supernatural: The Supernatural - John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers.
@albatroz424 Johnson does play fast, but he is much more than a fast guitar player, he's expressive through his speed, but it isn't his only way to create an intense melody. I like his music because it's soulful, passionate, rich and complex in a good way
Now those are some nice lines. Tasteful use of diminished and melodic minor. :)
Why compare Johnson and Satriani? Joe's not even in the video... It's like, who's better, mozart or beethoven? picasso or michaelangelo? Christians or Muslims? You'll just get into an argument that you cannot win, because no one can. Just like what you like, believe in what you believe, and stop saying that the other is crap.
a musician isn't better or worse because of his technical ability, but because of his beauty at the time of playing. maybe you should try looking up for gilmour, or knopfler, and if you do, you will realise that music isn't about playing a great number of notes together.
technical ability matters and has always mattered. its not even a question of whether it matters. the only question is to what extent does it matter. dont tell technical ability doesnt make a musician better or worse because that is simply a load of shit.
of course technical ability matters, always if you use it for musical purposes. I mean, it means nothing to play 1000 notes per second if you don't say something. like vai, malmsteen or that bunch of sportsmen who the only thing they do is to play a lot of notes together without saying or transmiting anything.
You don't need a lot of technical ability to play Something's solo, and it'll not be easy for you to find another one as nice as that one.
But this cant be an excuse to be musically ignorant, the right thing might be as Picasso, he can paint as caravaggio but he choose to paint like a child.
People, this is pretty clear. It doesn't matter if you play fast or slow, as long as you keep it nice. Look at EJ, who plays very fast and very nice too. Look at petrucci who plays very fast and doesn't say or transmit any feeling. Look at David Gilmour, who can play an orgasmic slow solo as Time. Look at a begginer guitarist who plays slow and shitty.
13,000th view! Please don't compare Satriani and Johnson. I listen to both of their music, and their styles are too different to compare. Johnson is very eclectic, unique, and has an angel's tone. Satriani can shred, play with soul (I'm not saying Johnson doesn't), incorporates a lot of music theory, and uses crazy whammy bar effects. I personally think they are pretty much as good as each other, and I'll leave it at that.
In my opinion there are five type of guitarists:Bedroom guitarists,Just rhytmn like in Green Day who dont have much skills other than in songwriting, "Rock Legends" like Ace Frehley and Slash that dont have much knowledge in theory but theyre playing sounds good, Virtuosos; Steve Vai, Satch, Eric Johnson, Petrucci who do mostly instrumental music and Legends like Hendrix, Page, Van Halen and Santana whos had made a huge impact on guitar playing.
Define virtuoso then. "One who can play anything on his/her instrument" Let's see, vai know's just about every chord, progression, and lick ever, and has played for Zappa and Whitesnake, went to berklee and learned incredible amounts of guitar information, and still writes incredible compositions.
TFirst, he definition of virtuoso isn't One who can play anything on his or her instrument, it's a person dedicated to the arts.
Second... I know. I was trying to express my feelings, maybe a little too explicitly, on Steve Vai. He is a virtuoso, I just don't hold him in the same esteem as Eric Johnson, simply because Steve Vai seems more concerned with showmanship than the actual music. I don't think that's bad, he just seems to fake/ridiculous on stage to me.
Aww, thanks for your reply. But see, I really don't give a fuck what you classify me as. You are nobody to me over the internet, you're just a virtual name on a screen. It's my opinion, I don't care if you think they 'carry weight' or not. To me they do, and I know I'm not the only one who thinks of Vai in that manner.
And ignorant also. Steve Vai is indeed a virtuoso - not many rock players have his ability to produce and compose at his level. That in itself is an art. Showmanship comes with entertainment c'mon... you'd rather he stands there like a lame duck in the name of 'art' ffs that's just Steve's style... I love both these guy for their different styles, attitudes etc, etc. Open your mind a little bit man.
I have already acknowledged the fact that he is indeed a virtuoso, and he can play very well... but that's not showmanship, he crossed the line a long time ago. There's a difference between showmanship and an exhibition of egotistical show-off. I would not rather that he stand there and not do anything, but I would respect him more as a performer if he pulled it back... Quite a bit. I like Eric Johnson more because he doesn't try to overdo it.
lol, for some reason whenever I see video's of EJ playing live it seems that prior to and after a song he speaks rather quietly. But this wasn't the case when I saw him live last year in Toronto.

omg the g3 experience is not about the strat! and jeff beck is 100 times worst than eric johnson! no sensibility. But Satriani do the job.Hes 100 times better thean ej and jb
Satriani aint better than EJ. You can't even begin to compare them. EJ plays with his sensibility, an awesome sound, you know, what we call FEELINGS. I saw on another vid comment, and I agree, Satriani has a shiny guitar, and fast fingers (EJ's are damn fast too though). I don't like Satriani's sound. No feelings.
well I kinda agree with Zuo, satch's tone aint my type of tea. But tone aint everything but it definatly something. But what i think Zuo means is that satch's tone doesn't really sound evocative and soaring like Eric's, of course how Ej pharses his lines. But that tone of his makes everything just sound so full and rich and warm. But each to his own make your own mind, just my two cents :).
did u know that satriani is a student of ej? his good but not good enough compare to ej...his fast fingers is only on part of the fretboard. look how ej roll over the whole fretboard. and the fx they are using listen how clear it is that ej is using. watch them in acoustic then try to compare them hus better without a fx
@fanqueen Ah well i grew older since that last comment, I listen more to Satch than i do EJ. Anyways, the two of them are masters, each in his own way. Their sound are different, their music is different... The instrument is the same though, and the music they play give me chills. That's what matters ^^
This is more like S.R.V. than S.R.V. (though it has a decidedly Claptonian feel to it)

Ppl´s talking bout what´s better, tocar la guitarra RAPIDO o RELAJADO.
- . ..
He memorizado la mayoría de los solos de Eric Johnson, y consigo cantarlos ^^.
Why so fast!? They´re play different kinds of music.
Además don´t like SO much distorssion.
Eric Johnson puts all his effort on giving a good show for his fans.
After a long long time escuchando todo tipo de guitarras, elijo EJ.
