There are a LOT of offensive translations. And I hope you guys fix it.

For example: If you translate "I love you bitch!" to portuguese(Brazil), you'll get "I love you mae!". The problem is "mae" means "mom" in english.

That is not acceptable.

there is nothing difficult either in grammar rules, or vocabulary.

the reason why machine tralsnation is that in order to translate with quality, the translator must understand the text he is translating. and that means a full AI capable of thionking... we're not even close to that. Google Translate's output is still very bad anyway

Okay. Deliberately so if you at least understand a bit :-). When are you going to translate a few sentences in the comments, it's not even that bad. But when you need to read an article on Wikipedia, you cease to enjoy it after two minutes. Then too when překládáš difference between standard and non-standard Czech. Lots hovorovejch words you do not find it. It can also translate it but bad words.

I'll show u how not-accurate it is. Now I'll translate a clear spanish phrase into english:

"While Google is one of the best translators, it is still quite poor. I noticed at least when I translate into my language phrases, and notice the difference. I see now that when translating into English is not so bad, but if you notice when it is translated into Spanish. I wonder if over time, says this video, the translator will improve."

its incredible that in 2011, translators programs are not accurate at all yet... Google is one of the best, as all that google make, but it is still not accurate even translating 2 basics languages as it could be english to spanish.. There have to be an option for the user to THUMB UP or something like that a translation result, so the server know which is the most appropriated one, and save it .

I think that google has got very little of patterns in Czech - English combination because translations in this combination are terrible.

as a bilingual french-english, i find the translations are sometimes spot on, or a little bit off.

It is the best translator I have used in 19years :)

I use it, then refine it.

Other translation methods were useless, and often meant that I had to write most of it myself anyway.

@totallydubbed Yeah, me too. I'm a bilingual Japanese-English, and in auto-detect, Google Translate detects Japanese sentences as Chinese. :( (So, I have to change language into "Japanese" every time.)

Sometimes the translations ARE bit off, but when I don't have the time to translate all of the text to English, I use Google Translate, and then fix.

its still shocking tbh. you cant rely on it to give accurate translations, but it is reasonable at giving single words. imho, dictionaries and suchlike will always be more reliable

Dear Commentators, saying "sucks, f%cks, etc..." do you remember the time 10-12 years ago? there were nothing like this! and now you have free tool that AT LEAST can give you approximate translation from UNKNOWN language.

I agree, machine is machine, human is human, human is way better than robot, but think: robots are way better now than 10 years ago, and it is scary to imagine that robots will be 10 times better after 10yrs, and maybe 100 times better in next 20yrs!

i've been using google translate to "peek" into private discussions in indonesian, oh and i've noticed that there is bisaya compatibility in "phillipino"

it's good, but i suggest setting bisaya in a different translation setting from phillipino.

why?

1. bisaya has a different grammar structure from tagalog/phillipino

2. there are conflicting words in tagalog/bisaya

3. they are different languages

4. they have different pronunciations

5. the two languages have different accents.

This is amazing. As a Spanish student for 4 years in high school I can honestly look back into my sophomore year and compare it to my senior year and remark that google translate has gotten much better at translating Spanish to English.

Would you agree with me that one day (in light of watching this video and learning that the program is constantly growing and learning) we will all have a FREE translator that seemlessly and flawlessly translates from one language to another?

Computers are only machines and computer translations will be never perfect and even good. I am from Czech Republic and Czech - English translations are terrible. You must sometimes read it many times if you want to understand Czech translations.

@htmdvs999 Dobře. Schválně jestli tomu budeš alespoň trochu rozumět :-). Když si dáš přeložit několik vět v komentářích, tak to neni ještě tak hrozný. Když si ale chceš přečíst třeba nějaký článek na wikipedii, přestane tě to bavit po dvou minutách. Potom je taky rozdíl když překládáš spisovnou a nespisovnou češtinu. Spousty hovorovejch výrazů ti to ani nenajde. Umí to ale překládat i sprostá slova.

I love messing with Google Translate. If you translate "To be or not to be, that is the question" to Chinese, it comes back as "To be or not to be. This is a problem." Translate it to other languages more and more and soon it makes no sense at all.

Google Translate is wrong. Halo is not hello in Indonesian. I type in "crap" and translate it to Hindi, WTF is baklavasa???!!!! Plus, for the Hindi, they can't say my name right, even though I'm Hindi, and I typed in Tutti(poop), it said that word doesn't exist in Hindi, and I made them say it in Hindi, they pronounced in Tootie, and poop isn't Goli Calane Ki Avasa! Google Translate is a FAIL! I only use it to create new word or languages.
