Heard it first on Frankie Crocker as well... couldn't remember the name of the song, so went down to J&R jazz section... mentioned Crocker's show, the guy knew exactly what song, who sang it, and who wrote the lyrics ... which brings me to my point... Eddie Jefferson. Check out his version - I actually like Pleasure's version better, but Jefferson's version is definitely worth a listen.
I also remember Frankie Crocker closing his show with this...I havent heard it near 30 yrs now! lol Oh boy...I am sure happy you have posted it. WOW Brilliant!
ahhhhhhhhhhhh, so coooooool, now this takes me back to Flatbush, Brooklyn. I was just 15 or 16 when I first heard it. I am now 54 and its like it was yesterday. I thank whom ever is responsible for posting it, I loved it then and still love it today.

WBLS, radio New York City! If you hear this song you know it's 6 o'clock and Frankie is signing off. I miss old Harlem, 125th Street sitting on the roof and relaxing....
@megan71457 Yes I remember that is where I first heard this song while stationed there in the Coast Guard. Reminds me of New York every time I hear it.
Oh how I remember classic AOL. You never needed reminding as to when your buddies would log on or off.. lololol. Anywhoo...thanks for the post- I've been looking for this.
My sister called me to ask if I remembered this song...How can anyone forget it that ever listened to "The Chief ROCKER FRANKIE CROCKER on WBLS 107.7 in New York...Thank you SO much for making my day, and week!
Sad to say King Pleasure (Clarence Beeks) died in Los Angeles in 1976 or 1977. He fell out from popularity during the '60's. The Manhattan Transfer and other groups perform some form of vocalese nowadays, but King Pleasure was one of the pioneers of the technique.
I SENT THIS OUT TO ALL MY FRIENDS FROM EAST HARLEM, AND THEY'RE STILL THANKING ME. FOR THE MEMORIES. I WAS SEVENTEEN AT TIME. AND NOW AT 76 I'M STILL ENJOYING IT. ( THIS FROM AN ITALIAN KID FROM EAST HARLEM.) AND FRANKIE CROCKER, WHAT ELSE U NEED RIP GUY'S
A classic for sure. For my wife and I, this is our song. James Moody was a wonderful musician and clearly a gifted lyricist of saxophone. He will be missed. King Pleasure and Blossom Dearie, with their vocalese rendition, is a perfect tribute to a bebop icon. Rest in Peace, James. Fact is, "You can come on in, man, and blow if you want to. I'm through."
When this song came on the radio back in the the day in NYC you just knew that the Frankie Crocker show is ended for the night,. beautiful song. Oh Man the memories....
May we each live to be one hundred, but me 100 minus a day so that i never know that people like you passed away......Frankie Crocker, radio isn't the same without you.
Wow!!! Many memories come flooding back to earlier years listening to BLS in New York. Frankie Crocker playing this song each night at 8 pm. Soooooooo Cool.
Please people: this song was not written nor originally recoeded by King pleasure!!!!
King Pleasure's version is a cover and is inferior to the original. " Moody's Mood for Love" was written and first recorded by the late great Eddie Jefferson, who invented this style of Jazz vocalese when he wrote lyrics to tenor sax virtuosso Coleman Hawkins' recording of "Body and Soul." If you think King Pleasure is hip, check out the original!
I can remember when my father brought this record (78) home when I was a kid. I liked it very much then. Long before Frankie Crocker used it as his closing music it brought back memories. I can also remember when Symphony Sid used to play it. Great music for real music lovers.
The disc-jockey at Widow McCoy's bar in Coconut Groove, Florida, back in the mid 70s, would end each night with this song. I've been searching for this song since! Thanks for sharing this and bringing me back such great memories!
@wtesoro Sorry I took such a long time to answer...thanks for the information buddy! You're the best...and my you live to be 100 and me 100 minus a day...
@wtesoro Thanks! brings back great memories growing up in the Bronx listening to the symphony sid show on the radio in the park on hot summer nights! luv it!!! (and it sounds like something fell in the background @ 2:23) but no matter, still love it!
@automatan That's funny; Frankie Crocker who was a DJ for WBLS-FM in the '70's would sign off with the instrumental version and then the King Pleasure version for years.
As a native New Yorker who gre up listening to Frankie Crocker on WBLS, I recall King Pleasure's version of "Moody's Mood for Love" very fondly. But crocker ended his show with TWO versions of the song. Immediately after the end of the 7:50 pm Mutual Black Network newscast, Frankie played an instrumental version of the song, during which he talked his way to his final sign-off for the night, followed by King Pleasure's version. Does anyone out there remember who recorded the instrumental?
This used to be Frankie Crocker's signature sign-off around 8:00PM on WBLS 107.5 FM in a class by itself. Back in the day (Disco Fever 70s) in NYC whenever you heard this on the weekends you knew that it was time to make your party plans for an all night into the dawn extravaganza.
Ah, I'm a teenager again, its 1973,4,5,?, I'm in evander park playing basketball and we all stop to sing there i go, there i go, there i go,.....Thanks
BTW does anyone remember the Jazz guitar tune he started his show with?
@rexboogie Ahhh, Yeah!!! WBLS! I remember Frankie Crocker always ending his show with this song! You are following in a great tradition! My father used to play this LP all the time. The memories are so strong and lovely! Awesome!
This is a family classic I listened until I learned all the words. So did each of my children. Amazing to hear them sing this together. It is now a family heirloom. Thanks. It was so nice hearing it again. I have to email it all over the country now.
