@chaoticblue123 Cantonese dialect, in Hong Kong they pronounce N's usually like L's. Like in Canto, the word for 'you' is Nei, but they said it like Lei so using Canto dialect of speech, it's said like gong leuih, not gong neuih. :)
Thanks Carlos for the Cantonese words. Your videos are a fun way to learn.
One suggestion: it would be a big help if you used the official Yale Romanization. Almost all of the US colleges that teach Cantonese use it, and it is the system used at Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and most Cantonese-English dictionaries. It is pretty easy system. Thx.
Really, I was for there few yrs but ain't like it much. HK is a place of coyy-cat and lacks of elegant style. Worst of it , the ppls of Hong Kong are very racial bias toward Asian minority.
@fgah Maybe, it was right, because many people come to HK, they want to settle in there, (live, work and study in HK). I think that can change their original culture become extremely diverse (with other influences).. :)
@lolodebrges Carlos lives in Abbotsford, Canada. His Cantonese is amazing. I am a Cantonese and I have learnt some contemporary Cantonese slangs from him which I have not been keeping up since I have been in Canada for over 30 years.
@KingOfBeatdown I am a native Cantonese speaker, and I was from HK, I think the HK version of cantonese is corrupted due to people's laziness in using the proper pronunciation, but nonetheless, I use the L sound myself also.
You are right. The "N" sound is proper but the "L" sound has been used so much it's become very common. Even though it's wrong, we still use it. Just like the word "a'int" was never a word but now it is.
I have friends/family in HK and they all speak with the "L" sound. Alot of people in HK speak with the "L" sound. Like a previous poster said, they are just being lazy. So it's very common there. Also, most people in New york, philly speak with the "L" sound as well.
I never said it's not. I said it will not change. Whether we are in HK, Philly, NY, LA, it doesn't matter. We will still use the "L" sound no matter how wrong it is.
Languages do change in time and they will, there are many examples in Jap and Kor, even in Engli, I have no problem with it, but I just prefer the standard pronunciation, that's all.
I guess they even teach this incorrect pronunciation in HK schools? That must have helped spread it a lot.
@KingOfBeatdown: I've always pronounced it with an N sound and always got corrected by HK friends who insist that the "proper" pronunciation is with the L sound. Nice to know that I've always been doing it the proper, correct Cantonese way and it was just them being lazy! (I've verified what you said by going to zhongwen.com and using the link there to Hong Kong University's official Cantonese pronunciation guide via audio files.)

You tutorial is misleading.
It's "nui" for 女, this is the standard pronunciation, starts with an 'N'.
As for "lui", is what they call '懒音lan yum'(relaxed pronunciation), they use that informally in casual talks, you better get rid of it.
uzerofutube 7 months ago
@uzerofutube
It's depends on where you're from. He's learning the HK pronunciation. Most people I know use the "L" sound.
KingOfBeatdown 7 months ago
@KingOfBeatdown I am a native Cantonese speaker, and I was from HK, I think the HK version of cantonese is corrupted due to people's laziness in using the proper pronunciation, but nonetheless, I use the L sound myself also.
kamkam2828 7 months ago
@KingOfBeatdown
Really?
One of the Japanese Kanji readings of "女" is 'nyo'.
Same thing in Korean Hanja reading is also pronounced 'nyo'.
They both start with an "n", you mind telling me where they learnt to read Chinese characters?
uzerofutube 6 months ago
@uzerofutube
You are right. The "N" sound is proper but the "L" sound has been used so much it's become very common. Even though it's wrong, we still use it. Just like the word "a'int" was never a word but now it is.

KingOfBeatdown 6 months ago
@KingOfBeatdown
Is it as common as the standard pronunciation? I don't think so.
So this 'L' sound has turned into a HK accent, I don't think they would use the 'N's anymore in the future century.
uzerofutube 6 months ago
@uzerofutube
No because it has even spread to the USA. Everyone here uses the L sound and I doubt it's going to change.
KingOfBeatdown 6 months ago
@KingOfBeatdown
You just said it's 'the HK pronunciation', it's a HK accent!
This accent starts in HK, and doesn't matter where it spreads to.
It IS the HK accent!!
uzerofutube 6 months ago
@uzerofutube
