  • @funslider20

Not at medieval times, but I have played at the Texas Renaissance Festival (near Houston.)

  • nice flag..... but that trumpet sounds hard work...

  • @orichalcum1

Yes, it's a bit of a bear to play the herald trumpet for two reasons: (1) The sound comes out so far away from you that it is a little difficult to hear yourself, (2) The weight of the instrument is so far out that your arms get a little tired when you've been playing it for a while!

  • amazing trumpet player

  • Thank you. I'm glad that you enjoyed the video!

    ~Randy

  • Shouldn't a real herald trumpet be a natural trumpet? This one has valves, those weren't invented before the 1830's...

  • This is a herald trumpet. A natural trumpet looks similar to it, but has no valves, but often has a few tone holes on it (sort of like on a woodwind instrument.) The herald trumpet has a prettier sound than the natural trumpet and is much more versatile.

  • @HoustonTrumpet uh i play trumpet and ya it has 3 valves. the with no valves is the bugel if im not mistakin

  • @gayhorseseathaaay

That is correct: No valves = bugle....or natural trumpet, perhaps.

  • great job...i enjoyed your other videos as well...you also have very good posture while playing, which i envy. is there any chance i can get your arrangement of pachabel canon?

  • Thank you so much! I'm glad that you have enjoyed my videos. I hope to publish my Pachelbel Canon arrangement (and others), hopefully some time before I die! This project has been delayed so many times due to things getting in the way, such as my day job, frequent gigs, other obligations, and life in general. I will send a notice out to my subscribers when the sheet music finally becomes available. Thanks, again!

  • wow the trumpet is so grand! so is your playing! the trumpet goes really well with the organ~

  • @sevaudible Thanks! Yes, trumpet and organ is absolutely one of my favorite chamber ensembles. And, it sounds like a much bigger group than just two people playing.

  • That's a herald trumpet, in the key of Bb. I am working on trying to publish my arrangement of this piece, so I'll let you know when that happens. Best wishes to you!

  • @HoustonTrumpet

Very nice music. Can you send me the sheet music too, please? Thank you

  • Thanks, glad that you like it. I'm hoping to publish this arrangement in the hopefully not-too-distant future. It seems like my day job and other obligations are constantly delaying my music publishing plans. If you subscribe to my YouTube channel, I'll send out a message to all subscribers once my arrangements finally become available. Stay tuned.......

  • thats an an awesome trumpet! can i have the music for this? btw that thing must way a ton!!!

  • wow thats amazing!

why is that trumpet so long though??

    is it evn a trumpet?

  • Thanks, glad you were amazed!

That is called a herald trumpet, which is played like a regular Bb trumpet. But the herald trumpet is very long because its tubing is not all coiled up as on most trumpets.

  • BRAVO! where are you? the background music is piano or just music? good job,i play piano

  • Thanks, I'm happy that you like it! I recorded this at home, with organ accompaniment.

  • You're welcome! I'm glad that it helped. Good luck, and best wishes to you, my friend!

  • Thanks, Houston.

I'm doing this for my niece in Ohio this Friday. You've been a big help.

  • It does get heavy after a while. I have to do extra push-ups each day for about a month before each gig!

  • That trumpet must be a bitch to hold up straight for a while!

  • Alright Thanks, I found something kinda like it, and I am trying to figure out the rest by ear/ watching your fingers, but it is hard to see.

  • Great! Good luck with it.

  • i wish i had on like that! that's cool!

  • I don't really have sheet music for this--I just extrapolated a trumpet part from the organist's music. If I can find the time one day, I will write out my own arrangement and publish it. If so, I will let you know. Good luck with the wedding!

  • I am supposed to play this version of the wedding march for my cousin's wedding, could you send me the music for it?

  • its you???? houston trumpet?

  • Yes, that's really me. (Not my stunt double.)

  • go randy oh hell yeaaa baby!

  • Thanks!

  • Yes, it is rather heavy because so much of the weight is so far out and away from you when you play it. (Your arms get tired a lot faster than when playing the regular Bb trumpet.)

  • its not heavy ????

  • Such elegant instrument!!! I just fell in love with it!

Where I can purchase one for me? I'm a Bb Trumpet player...

  • Glad you like it! Any musical instrument dealer that sells regular Bb trumpets can also sell you a herald trumpet. But, because there is not a big demand for them (because they are such a specialty instrument), they are usually not kept in stock, and must often be special ordered.

  • My herald trumpet's brand is Blessing, a company that makes one of the better heralds, in my opinion. Many other fine makers produce them as well, such as Getzen, which also makes a very good one. You can even buy a Bach Stradivarius herald if you really want to, but that seems like over-kill to me. SEE MY ADDITIONAL POST (next to this one) FOR MORE INFO:

  • Thanks. Keep practicing every day, and studying, and I'm betting that one day, you will be able to play like that too!

  • I wish I could Play like That

  • in this exactly moment a im fan of Randy Dunn

  • Cool! I'm glad that you enjoyed this video.

Best wishes to you, my friend!

  • since the trumpet is so long isnt it heavy

  • Yes. Although, without the banner on it, the herald trumpet actually weighs about the same as a standard Bb trumpet, because most of the weight of this instrument is further out away from the body, it actually feels a lot heavier. And the flag adds even more weight to it. My arms definitely get much more tired when playing the herald trumpet. Time to go do some push-ups and some bicep curls!

  • Don't give up on the dream, perhaps one day you will be processing with your dearly beloved to this music. : )

  • i wish i would be wed like that

  • Siete stati a guardare troppi cartoni animati!

  • W i topi morti nella campana!

  • This is like a medeival wedding.

  • That's true. I've played the herald trumpet at weddings at the Texas Renaissance Festival and at other Renaissance/Medieval themed weddings.

  • Thank you--glad that you liked it. I'm not sure where you are talking about with the ascending "blips" though. Maybe those ascending arpeggios (6 notes)? The last of these 6 arpeggiated notes are usually played down an octave, so maybe that's what you are talking about. Or maybe you mean taking the melody up an octave after the arpeggio pick-up notes? This might work on an instrument like, say, violin, but would be too high on the trumpet, making it sound like a lead trumpet in a big band.

  • Great playing! If your able though, the last couple of times, for a building effect, on the last couple ascending "blips" I wouldn't drop down the octave. Just me though, sounded awesome!

  • The brand? This is a Blessing herald trumpet, which I think is one of the best brands. Getzen also makes a really good herald trumpet. Several other companies make them also, but the quality can vary greatly, depending on the maker. It is always best to try before you buy. Also, some herald trumpets (such as this one) are longer because they have less coil, with a tunable bell only instead of a tuning slide. And the longer the herald trumpet is, the more visually impressive it is.

  • what company trumpet is that?

  • Amazing! That trumpet, does that require you to play certain notes higher or is it the same as a standard trumpet, I ask this just because the trumpet is longer... a lot longer.

  • The herald trumpet actually has the same length tubing as a standard Bb trumpet, it's just that most of its tubing is straight and not coiled around as on the standard Bb trumpet. The range and fingerings are exactly the same. However, it is a bit more difficult to play because (1) it feels heavier and is harder to hold for long periods of time because the center of gravity is out further, + (2) It is a little harder to hear yourself play (& get feedback) because the sound is further away.

  • Hey Mr.Dunn, how are you?! Some of us miss you and wonder if you still work for Pasadena?! And you play beautifully!! You sound sooo awesome!!! Sincerely, Amanda(your former trumpet student)

  • Hey Amanda! (young trumpet star and former student of mine) It's good to hear from you! Thank you for the nice compliments about my playing: That really means a lot coming from a hot-shot trumpet player like you. I no longer work for Pasadena ISD. I now teach at an music and fine arts magnet school in Houston ISD, teaching band in grades 2-5, and music for grades K & 1. I really love my new teaching job, but I miss my Pasadena kids a lot also. Let me know when your next concert is.

  • who is wedding XD

  • This piece is often used as a traditional wedding recessional music at weddings in the USA and in many other countries as well.

  • friki

  • That music will be played on my wedding :D

  • Excellent! Best wishes to you. May your wedding (including the wedding music) be beautiful, and may your dreams come true.

  • it would be kinda hard to hold this trumpet for a long duration...

  • You are right, because the center of gravity is so much further away from the body that it makes the herald trumpet feel like it is a lot heavier than it actually is. I played entrance fanfares on it for a party last night for two hours (as guests arrived), and my arms are more tired than my lips are. I had better do some more push-ups or perhaps some weight-lifting!

  • cool

  • .......................just hope that the person won't get tired to hold the trumpet. lool you need more air, give him some!!!

  • oh.. can i have the notes??

the songs u played are simply

    ~ B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L ~

  • Thank you very much. I'm happy to hear that you enjoyed it. I am working on a soon to be published arrangement of this that will be available on the Shop page of my website. I'll let you know when that finally happens. (It has been delayed by a hurricane and other projects.)

  • Cool, this is a really great arrangement.

  • Thanks, I'm really glad that you enjoyed it!

  • I love that...really nice tone!

  • Thank you very much! I am happy that you enjoyed it.

  • give him some air......... he needs LOL

  • hahaha, xD yes he does :D

  • oh my gosh that was similar the one in my dream/

  • Cool. Sweet dreams!

  • Wow that's neat! I've been thinking about getting one, just to have haha. Is the tone close to the same or does it make a huge difference? In the video it sounds a little odd compared to a regular, but it's hard to tell not being in person. Nice job!

  • The tone is similar to the regular Bb trumpet, but it seems like herald trumpets tend to sound a little darker for some reason. The biggest challenge is getting used to the sound coming out so far away from you and getting used to the way it feels. It seems very heavy because so much of the weight is centered out so far away from you.

  • is that thing heavy

  • Good question! And one that hardly anyone ever thinks to ask. The actual weight is approximately the same as the regular Bb trumpet, except the banner does add a little extra weight. However, the fact that a large part of the instrument (including the banner) is further away from the player's body does make it feel quite a bit heavier.
