The VT editor will take this footage to the grave.....why oh why isn't the camera on gadd? Steve Gadd, along with Buddy Rich are the 2 MOST GIFTED DRUMMERS TO HAVE EVER GRACED THE STAGE. end of!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The thing about Gadd is his rhythm. He makes you want to move even if you can't dance. He places every note he plays where he wants and it is in time. I feel every note he plays. He puts all his intention into everything he plays, even one quarter note. That is what him stand out. He doesn't use technique for the sake of itself. He uses technique to make music. He is the most musical drummer of his generation.
@galleans Primo impara a scrivere Chick Corea.Seconda cosa il solo è stato bello così proprio perché i due erano molto vicini mentalmente e c'era una forte intesa.Incredibile come certa gente possa dire stronzate del genere, mai pensato di lasciar perdere la musica che non valete un cazzo?grazie.
@kook1028 That's Latin music my friend. The piano is a percussion instrument and plays montuno - a repeated rhythmic, melodic and harmonic pattern as an accompaniment. This is the normal role for the piano. I can understand if you don't like it, but it's the genre, the style. Perfectly played.
@gratzr No thats not just the style of Latin music. It dont have to be like that. The band just decided to do it like this, and yes thats typically latin. But they could make the piano less dominating and more varying in the drum solo while it still would be holding a latin rhythm. And that would be nice in my ears - but not in yours, and I respect that.
Gadd has the best feel. that is perhaps why he is the most recorded drummer of all time, and extremely wealthy. Weckel is the most amazing, Erskine is the best at at Jazz.
I have so many indispensable influences as a drummer, all of them amazing. But if someone put a gun to my head and said "Pick a favorite", it would be Gadd. I remember where I was the first time I heard him when I was 10 years old. It was the fill out of the intro into the first verse on Al Jarreau's "Roof Garden" (Breakin' Way - 1981). To this day, I've never heard a more musical drum fill. There are lots of clips of Gadd posted here, but THIS solo might be my favorite I've ever heard from him
I go through drummers as favorites. John Bonham. Billy Cobham. Gavin Harrison. Dennis Chambers. Neil Peart. There are so many, but Steve Gadd playing Aja for Steely dan in the 70's made my ears bleed !!
@tasdau SO TRUE! It boggles the mind how many directors don't know how to shoot musical performances: extreme close-ups, far-away "nosebleed" shots, too many/too frequently cuts to the audience for their reaction (who cares??!! I want to see the performers!!). I think they try to shoot "artistically" rather than being the eyes for the viewer. Arrrrgh!!
Nah, I couldn't possibly do it! Hehehe! But, to me it's not Gadd's speed that's so cool; it's his great feel, groove, and tasteful fills that blow me away. He always finds a great way to complement what the other musicians are doing. In my mind, that's the hallmark of a great drummer. BTW, I actually saw these same guys at a concert in Copenhagen back in summer 1992. I just happened to be there on business and caught them in concert at Tivoli Gardens. Simply awesome!
he's the guy who has respect for chick corea though. I instantly like the person who respects chick corea with the weird videos over the person who thinks he should be taken out of the equation!
As it turns out - I've played piano for over 9 years and know quite a bit about music myself. I just think his constant runs need some variation and less overbearing tone during the Gadd solo. I'm standing by what I say about the guy calling me a "faggot". His only vid is of a dude literally putting meat in his mouth until chucking on the street. I don't give a fuck about your respect, but I don't like some jerkoff kid calling me a faggot over an opinion.
Well that's fine. You need to defend yourself, and i don't blame you if someone called you a "faggot".
Everyone's entitled to their own musical opinion so i can't really fault with you there, just like i enjoy Chick Corea! I think you need to calm down too, and be more comfortable with your sexuality, seeing as you seem so quick to jump and defend your sexual preference. Lighten up mate, lighten up.
Haha! no, sorry buddy, i'm an englishman, i have the same initials as him and i thought that it'd be better a name than something like chumpyfruitster29.
I don't have a big ego and claim to be any bit as good as him either tho i swear!
Steve Gadd, out of time?? Doh. What planet you from, brother? Wonderful how he used--and subverted! --his signature style to build to an awesome crescendo. And it gets better with repeated listens. Which I suggest to our extraterrestial bro.
irrelevant and my read is, that gadd is one of the most biggest influences in contemporary drumming. its very difficult to find a drummer with gadds versatility and musicality. gadd never bores me. when i listen to drummers like colaiuta e.g., yes he is probably today the "monster", but my ears tend to shut down....to much notes. gadd can make the biggest musically statement with one note
and this probably makes the difference. gadd is an drumming chameleon.
Well maybe you should do some drugs it might help you hear properly. You must be crazy to think that Moon is comparable to any of those guys, and likewise that Neil is as good as Steve.
You're a fucking clown if you think Neil Squirt can do anything near Gadd. When Peart thought he could play jazz, he got his ASS handed to him by who on the Burning for Buddy sessions? Gadd!
Learn a few things about music you fucking nimrod before you go opening your pie hole.
Ah, words of wisdom coming from the expert no doubt? I won't stoop to your level (because I don't have to) but my comments about Neil still stand. Now go chill somewhere, you sound a little uptight.
Neil Peart is great in Rush . He is without a doubt one of the most influential drummers in history . For drummers learning to play in the early 80`s there was nobody who matched the influence of Neil Peart . But the truth is , without Rush we would never have heard of Neil .
Gadd , on the other hand has played with literally every great musician and songwriter since the early 70`s . In my opinion it was Steve Gadd that is / was the bridge between Jazz drumming and Pop drumming .
If you go down to my original posts you will see that I rated Peart as one of the best ROCK drummers. If you don't agree that's ok. We just have different opinions.
See folks, we can disagree without overreacting like some posters here that shall remain nameless. Thanks for your polite response sweetfly.
You're a lying sack of pig shit. You wrote that Peart WAS AS GOOD as Gadd. Stop talking out of your asshole you nutsucker and stop trying to qualify your ignorance.
I would have to agree. Peart is great, but his thing is taking a song, working on it and coming up with the parts he does. Gadd is just musical through and through. He hears music, he reacts and it comes out as genius. Sure Peart will be remembered as one of the most influential drummers in rock, but Gadd will just be remembered as one of the greatest drum set players ever!
Yeah, I know...I'm not the MVP of the church that's for sure but ignorant trolls who pretend to know something about talent and music sometimes need a verbal beatdown to shut them up. Believe me, I'd much rather squash this clown in person and dispel with the pejoratives.
gadd it is human and amzing. find the pulse or time its better than lost it. i really think that he doesnt lost it, because the latin rythm are not in perfect time or pulse, chick plays the tumbao on piano and gadd play a gret solo
You obviously do not understand Gadd's phrasing well. He's playing a lot of odd groupings of 3s and 5s in this solo and punctuating it with his signature licks. I follow his playing a lot and I can tell you that he's anything but lost.
man i hate people who only think a drummer is good only if he plays in like 2323123123213 bpm...its not even about speed...to me its all about groove...and if you cant groove...well...dont bother...
What is the name of this number? It reminds me of Falling Alice, The Mad Hatter. That has always been my favorite number of all times. Electric Return to Forever, Chick Corea and Steve Gadd.
What an ignorant comment. It takes a great level of mastery to be able to build a solo so fluidly from a low intensity to an electrifying climax as Gadd does here. All these while keeping the time and maintaining the very elastic feel of the vamp (through very clever placement of accents at odd places). Listen carefully, there's so much theme and variation in this solo, its as though Gadd is telling a story through his playing.
You don't play drums do you? Nobody who ever tried to play anything good on a drumset would ever call that awful. Very few other drummers can groove like Gadd, go give your opinion on things you actually know something about...not drumming.
.....I'll ignore all the comments being made by supposedly wise guy, smart-ass experts - I would rather just compliment the amazing music that these guys were playing. Awesome drum solo
Stalliec, in my opinion you, and no one of us can tell us how to play the drums. Besides that, music is art. Gadd has such a great level technically and artistically. If you can reach Gadd, then go and tell him, what is "right or wrong" (in your language, obviously).
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Gadd does an ok job, but at 2:27 where he chooses to use inverted paradiddle-diddles with the accent on the "ah" of each alternating 16ths, I feel it gives the sole a discordonant or imbalanced syncopation which could be easily corrected by instead choosing a straight six-stroke roll pattern with the accent on the "and" of each 16th, thus resolving the root samba feel. Other than that, it's a descent drum solo, all things considered.
What are you talkin' about? First he isn't playin' paradiddles at 2:27 but a simple double stroke on bass drum alternating with both hands (singles), second: in the typical 16th samba maneer...and third: this lick kicks hard! Furthermore please verify if Gadd is only doin' an "ok job". I'm not the biggest fan of Gadd (question of taste) but he deserves all our deepest respect. His energy is quite amazing!
I was being sarcastic - I'm a long and major Gadd fan and get tired of all the nit-picky technical comments on YouTube, so thought I'd throw out a sarcastic one and see how excited my fellow drummers could get :) Sorry to alarm you :)
Maybe when he was born, the word "chick" did not imply a girl...I personally think that word is derogatory, though. Oh, by the way, Steve Gadd, amazing.
I really wonder, why so many people want to waste their time proving other peoples opinions wrong, or finding something bad in the performance.. Idiots! Why not just enjoy the music you can't play yourselves!
and please don't messege back and disagree, because then you'll just prove me right. I won't believe you play as well as Corea or Gadd...
HAHA.. sure, iäm a long way from there. but what would life be without a goal? XD. So, mark my words. I am gonna fucking get there. i am, like steve gadd, gonna be able to recognizeble by my mere drumming style.
Enjoy the music i can't play? okay, for now. but later, iäm gonna rip off solo's better than gadd XD. wanna start a band with me?XD
NiXPredator- It's just that relaxed jazz timing you're hearing. Sounds off and pretty sloppy. Can't understand why people would voluntarily do that, but hey, people seem to like it.
Yes, and I like the facial expression at about 0:33. Looks like he's having a mini-stroke or some other momentary loss of muscle control. Special Chick. Didn't notice any drool, which is good.

Watch the Chick Corea Akoustic Band video,
or Tiempo de Festival, both with Dave Weckl.
The keyboardist in each video lays down a
guieter riff so the drummer can solo, however
the keyboardist can tell that Dave has the
groove nailed down, and so the keyboardist
does some quiet jamming of his own, not just
a simple riff over and over and over as is
in this video. Watch more closely, you can
tell.

and sounds awful. Cant find the groove,
seems to be lost, and Chick Corea just keeps
playing the same riff over and over, seems
to be waiting for Gadd to play something,
anything. Very poor performance.

What an ignorant comment. It takes a great level of mastery to be able to build a solo so fluidly from a low intensity to an electrifying climax as Gadd does here. All these while keeping the time and maintaining the very elastic feel of the vamp (through very clever placement of accents at odd places). Listen carefully, there's so much theme and variation in this solo, its as though Gadd is telling a story through his playing.
boyrob85 3 years ago
You don't play drums do you? Nobody who ever tried to play anything good on a drumset would ever call that awful. Very few other drummers can groove like Gadd, go give your opinion on things you actually know something about...not drumming.

From a Latin musician point of view a pretty cool samba.Steve Gadd suave!

Wow....I dont want to sound harsh or anything but Chick Corea really let himself go in recent years. Anyways, Steve Gadd is incredible as always :)

he is right, steve gadd is a recovering coke addict, some of his best work and performances of his early career steve was stoned out of his mind

Oh and, "that pianist" is Chick Corea for God sakes. One of the best jazz pianists on earth.
It's like the blind leading the dumb on here! LOL

Gadd is good. I'm more a Weckl, Donati fan, but Gadd is unreal in his own right.
He is pretty much a living legend so I think we should all just enjoy the man's music and marvel at what is.
Now, where to throw these drum sticks and where to pick up a good used trumpet! LOL
Symmetry44 3 years ago 3
this was the best comment i seen on gadd."where to get a used trumpet"....classic lol
wonkavella 3 years ago 2
Sorry, I correct myself. None of us should tell Gadd how to play drums.
martinlentini 3 years ago 3
Stalliec, in my opinion you, and no one of us can tell us how to play the drums. Besides that, music is art. Gadd has such a great level technically and artistically. If you can reach Gadd, then go and tell him, what is "right or wrong" (in your language, obviously).

Other than that, it's a descent drum solo, all things considered.
stalliec 3 years ago
What are you talkin' about? First he isn't playin' paradiddles at 2:27 but a simple double stroke on bass drum alternating with both hands (singles), second: in the typical 16th samba maneer...and third: this lick kicks hard! Furthermore please verify if Gadd is only doin' an "ok job". I'm not the biggest fan of Gadd (question of taste) but he deserves all our deepest respect. His energy is quite amazing!
memzehni 3 years ago
I was being sarcastic - I'm a long and major Gadd fan and get tired of all the nit-picky technical comments on YouTube, so thought I'd throw out a sarcastic one and see how excited my fellow drummers could get :) Sorry to alarm you :)

shut the fuck up, you go ahead and think that out in a split second while playing in front of several thousand people during a long set.

Dude. Those suspended notes must have sucked to learn for the pianist xD
JCLYM 3 years ago
The pianist is Chick Corea, nothing's a bitch for that guy to learn haha.
xhilikus 3 years ago 3
Except why his parents named him Chick.
Wish I could play like that.
JCLYM 3 years ago
Maybe when he was born, the word "chick" did not imply a girl...I personally think that word is derogatory, though. Oh, by the way, Steve Gadd, amazing.
octavarium23 3 years ago
@JCLYM
they didn't name him Chick. They named him Armando, after his father.

I really wonder, why so many people want to waste their time proving other peoples opinions wrong, or finding something bad in the performance.. Idiots! Why not just enjoy the music you can't play yourselves!
and please don't messege back and disagree, because then you'll just prove me right. I won't believe you play as well as Corea or Gadd...
uretohos 3 years ago 2
If their wasting their time then you just did as well. And I am now.
jiggity99 3 years ago
HAHA.. sure, iäm a long way from there. but what would life be without a goal?
